Ubiquitous systems are characterized by using devices and objects of everyday life. The software infrastructure of such systems appears dynamically populated by functionalities of those devices. Because environment's nature is highly variable, even the corresponding software infrastructure, ubiquitous systems have to handle those variations. It implies that a designer cannot predict a priori the environment in which its application will be executed. So, the approaches used should not only address specific cases of context. AOP provides a mean to encapsulate adaptations into aspects. Such an encapsulation improves the reusability of adaptation mechanisms. In this context our previous works called aspect of Assembly (AA) was based on AOP to propose mechanisms for self-adaptation of ubiquitous applications as an assembly of components. But they present few limitations in terms of reusability and to manage the dynamic variability of the environment. The paper presents Cascaded aspects of Assembly as an extended model of AA to address these limitations. They consist in chaining AA's weaving as cascades.

aspect-orientation has gained a lot of attention from researchers. This concept emerged as an appropriate paradigm to improve the modularization of crosscutting concerns, such as security, logging, and synchronization. In this paper, we provide formal semantics for aspect matching and weaving for a core language based on lambda-calculus. We adopt the pointcut-advice model, one of the fundamental and most popular AOP mechanisms. We consider basic pointcuts, i.e., get, set, call, and exec pointcuts. The semantics is based on a defunctionalized continuation-passing style since the latter provides a concise, accurate, and elegant description of AOP mechanisms.

It has been shown earlier that aspect-oriented change realization based on a two-level change type framework can be employed to deal with changes so they can be realized in a modular, pluggable, and reusable way. In this paper. this idea is extended towards enabling direct change manipulation using multi-paradigm design with feature modeling. For this, generally applicable change types are considered to be (small-scale) paradigms and expressed by feature models. Feature models of the Method Substitution and Performing Action After Event change types are presented as examples. In this form, generally applicable change types enter an adapted process of the transformational analysis to determine their application by their instantiation over an application domain feature model. The application of the transformational analysis in identifying the details of change interaction is presented.

Web-based solution is the emerged technology for e-learing system. However, due to the nature of web-based interface, each web page couples many bussiness concerns and results in difficult mangement problem. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) just provides the way to provide separation of concerns. Based on the advantage of AOP concept, we proposed an aspect-oriented Learning Activity Weaving framework (AOLAW) to overcome dynamic change problem in the learning activity planning. The renew framework for learning activity design provides (1) three-types weaving feature;(2) AOP features extension;(3) xml-based change configuration. Since our aspect-oriented weaving framework combined with the injection of crosscutting concerns in the dynamic learning activity, the next generation of e-learning system can be realized.

Contracts in Design by Contract (DbC) programming methodology are commonly considered as an example of crosscutting concerns that can be implemented using aspects in aspect-oriented programming (AOP). In this dissertation project, we try to examine this fact by writing several programs in DbC and then aspectizing the contracts therein. We verify whether the benefits offered by the DbC programming methodology are retained in the aspectized version of the programs. The DbC programs are written using EiffelStudio and AOP equivalents are written using aspectJ. aspectJ is the most widely used standard for AOP.

The development of applications for high-performance Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based embedded systems is a long and error-prone process. Typically, developers need to be deeply involved in all the stages of the translation and optimization of an application described in a high-level programming language to a lower-level design description to ensure the solution meets the required functionality and performance. This paper describes the use of a novel aspect-oriented hardware/software design approach for FPGA-based embedded platforms. The design-flow uses LARA, a domain-specific aspect-oriented programming language designed to capture high-level specifications of compilation and mapping strategies, including sequences of data/computation transformations and optimizations. With LARA, developers are able to guide a design-flow to partition and map an application between hardware and software components. We illustrate the use of LARA on two complex real-life applications using high-level compilation and synthesis strategies for achieving complete hardware/software implementations with speedups of 2.5x and 6.8x over software-only implementations. By allowing developers to maintain a single application source code, this approach promotes developer productivity as well as code and performance portability.

Legacy systems contain critical and complex business code that has been in use for a long time. This code is difficult to understand, maintain, and evolve, in large part due to crosscutting concerns: software system features, such as persistence, logging, and error handling, whose implementation is spread across multiple modules. aspect-oriented techniques separate crosscutting concerns from the base code, using separate modules called aspects and, thus, simplify the legacy code. aspect mining techniques identify aspect candidates so that the legacy code can then be refactored into aspects. This study shows that model-based clustering using a carefully selected vector-space of features can be more effective than extant aspect mining methods based on heuristic methods as such hierarchical or partitional clustering. Three model-based algorithms were experimentally compared against existing heuristic methods, such as k-means clustering and agglomerative hierarchical clustering, using six different vector-space models. Model-based algorithms performed better in not spreading the methods of the concerns across the multiple clusters and were significantly better at partitioning the data such that, given an ordered list of clusters, fewer clusters and methods were needed to be analyzed to find all the concerns. In addition, model-based algorithms automatically determined the optimal number of clusters, a great advantage over the heuristic-based algorithms. Lastly, the newly defined vector-space models performed better, relative to aspect mining, than the previously defined vector-space models

Future advanced embedded computing systems are expected to dynamically adapt applications' behavior and runtime system according to, e.g., usage contexts, operating environments, resources' availability, and battery energy levels. Besides application's functionalities provided by high-level and/or executable binary codes, code for specifying strategies/policies to extend typical functionalities with adaptability behavior is required. A domain-specific language, able to program this adaptability behavior, will allow developers to specify strategies for adaptation, will improve portability, and will help tools to map those strategies to the target system. This paper presents our recent ideas for programming strategies focused on runtime adaptability. The ideas are exposed using extensions to LARA, an aspect-oriented programming language, agnostic to the target language and system. We show examples of using LARA to specify strategies and we comment on the possible implementations to make viable those strategies.

The increasing capability and flexibility of reconfigurable hardware, such as Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), give developers a wide range of architectural choices that can satisfy various non-functional requirements, such as those involving performance, resource and energy efficiency. This paper describes a novel approach, based on an aspect-oriented language called LARA, that enables systematic coding and reuse of optimisation strategies that address such non-functional requirements. Our approach will be presented in three steps. First, this approach is shown to support design space exploration (DSE) which makes use of various compilation and optimisation tools, through the deployment of a master weaver and multiple slave weavers. Second, we present three compilation and synthesis strategies for word-length optimisation based on this approach, which involve three tools: the WLOT word-length optimiser deploying a combination of analytical methods;the AutoESL tool compiling C-based descriptions into hardware;and the ISE tool targeting Xilinx devices. Third, the effectiveness of the approach is evaluated. In addition to promoting design re-use, our approach can be used to automatically produce a range of designs with different trade-offs in resource usage and numerical accuracy according to a given LARA-based strategy. For example, one implementation for a subband filter in an MPEG encoder provides 31% savings in area using non-uniform quantizers when compared to a floating-point description with a similar error specification at the output. Another fixed-point implementation for the gridIterate kernel used by a 3D path planning application consumed 25% less resources when the error specification is increased from 1e-6 to 1e-4.
