aspect-oriented programming(AOP) can well solve the cross-cutting concerns. Because of the different features of aspect, AOP requires new techniques for testing. First, this paper proposes a model to test aspectoriented software. In order to support the testing model of the first three steps, we propose the algorithm of selecting aspect relevant test cases. Then, we develop a new tool to implement the theoretical of automating select test case. Finally, a case of the Bank Account System is studied to illustrate our testing approach.

Empirical evaluation of the fault detection effectiveness and test effort efficiency of the automated AOP testing approaches

Context: Testing process is a time-consuming, expensive, and labor-intensive activity in any software setting including aspect-oriented programming (ACIP). To reduce the testing costs, human effort, and to achieve the improvements in both quality and productivity of AOP, it is desirable to automate testing of aspect-oriented programs as much as possible. Objective: In recent past years, a lot of research effort has been devoted to testing aspect-oriented programs but less effort has been dedicated to the automated AOP testing. This denotes that the current research on automated AOP testing is not sufficient and is still in a stage of infancy. In order to advance the state of the research in this area and to provide testers of AOP-based projects with a comparison basis, a detailed evaluation of the current automated AOP testing approaches in a thorough and experimental manner is required. Thus, the objective of this paper is to provide such evaluation of the current approaches. Method: In this paper, we carry out an empirical study based on mutation analysis to examine four (namely Wrasp, aspectra, Raspect, and EAT) existing automated AOP testing approaches, particularly their underlying test input generation and selection strategies, with regard to fault detection effectiveness. In addition, the approaches are compared in terms of required effort in detecting faults as part of efficiency evaluation. Results: The experimental results and comparison provided insights into the effectiveness and efficiency of automated AOP testing with their respective strengths and weaknesses. Results showed that EAT is more effective than the other automated AOP testing approaches but not significant for all approaches. EAT was found to be significantly better than Wrasp at 95% confidence level (i.e. p < 0.05), but not significantly better than aspectra or Raspect. Software Engineering Paradigm Independent Design Problems, GoF 23 Design Patterns, and aspect Design

The aim of the paper is to investigate applicability of object-oriented software design patterns in the context of aspect-oriented design. The paper analyses which of the GoF 23 patterns have a meaning in this context and how they are affected by it. The main assumption is that there exist design patterns that solve software engineering paradigm independent design problems and that such patterns, in the contrast to the patterns solving paradigm-specific design problems, can be expressed in terms of any software engineering paradigm. However, the paper deals only with two paradigms: aspect-oriented (AO) paradigm and object-oriented (OO) paradigm. It proposes a classification of design problems based on this assumption and a technique for redesigning object-oriented patterns into pure aspect-oriented ones. It presents a number of examples how to apply this technique and discusses the results obtained. The results show that 20 of the GoF 23 design patterns solve such design problems that are common at least for both mentioned paradigms and demonstrate in which way these patterns can be adapted for the needs of aspect-oriented design.

A pointcut-based coverage analysis approach for aspect-oriented programs

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a promising technology that supports separation of crosscutting concerns (i.e., functionality that tends to be tangled with, and scattered through the rest of the system). In AOP, a method-like construct named advice is applied to join points in the system through a special construct named pointcut. This mechanism supports the modularization of crosscutting behavior;however, since the added interactions are not explicit in the source code, it is hard to ensure their correctness. To tackle this problem, this paper presents a rigorous coverage analysis approach to ensure exercising the logic of each advice - statements, branches, and def-use pairs - at each affected join point. To make this analysis possible, a structural model based on Java bytecode - called PointCut-based Del-Use Graph (PCDU) - is proposed, along with three integration testing criteria. Theoretical, empirical, and exploratory studies involving 12 aspect-oriented programs and several fault examples present evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach. In complex software systems, modularity and readability tend to be degraded owing to inseparable interactions between concerns that are distinct features in a program. Such interactions result in tangled code that is hard to develop and maintain. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a powerful method for modularizing source code and for decoupling cross-cutting concerns. A decade of growing research on AOP has brought the paradigm into many exciting areas. However, pioneering work on AOP has not flourished enough to enrich the design of distributed systems using the refined AOP paradigm. This article investigates three case studies that cover time-honored issues such as fault-tolerant computing, network heterogeneity, and object replication in the cluster computing community using the AOP paradigm. The aspects that we define here are simple, intuitive, and reusable. Our intensive experiences show that (i) AOP can improve the modularity of cluster computing software by separating the source code into base and instrumented parts, and (ii) AOP helps developers to deploy additional features to legacy cluster computing software without harming code modularity and system performance.

Unveiling and taming liabilities of aspects in the presence of exceptions: A static analysis based approach

As aspects extend or replace existing functionality at specific join points in the code, their behavior may raise new exceptions, which can flow through the program execution in unexpected ways. Assuring the reliability of exception handling code in aspect-oriented (AO) systems is a challenging task. Testing the exception handling code is inherently difficult, since it is tricky to provoke all exceptions during tests, and the large number of different exceptions that can happen in a system may lead to the test-case explosion problem. Moreover, we have observed that some properties of AO programming (e.g., quantification, obliviousness) may conflict with characteristics of exception handling mechanisms, exacerbating existing problems (e.g., uncaught exceptions). The lack of verification approaches for exception handling code in AO systems stimulated the present work. This work presents a verification approach based on a static analysis tool, called. SAFE, to check the reliability of exception handling code in aspectJ programs. We evaluated the effectiveness and feasibility of our approach in two complementary ways (i) by investigating if the SAFE tool is precise enough to uncover exception flow information and (ii) by applying the approach to three medium-sized ApectJ systems from different application domains. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is an emerging technique that provides a means to clearly encapsulate and implement aspects that crosscut other modules. However, despite an interesting body of work for measuring cohesion in aspect-oriented (AO) Systems, there is poor understanding of cohesion in the context of AOP. Most of the proposed cohesion assessment frameworks and metrics for AOP are for aspectJ programming language. In this paper, we have defined a generic cohesion framework that takes into account, two well-known families of available AOP languages viz, aspectJ and CaesarJ. This unified framework contributes in better understanding of cohesion in AO technology, which can contribute in (i) comparing measures and their potential use, (ii) integrating different existing measures, which examine the same concept in different ways, and (iii) defining new cohesion metrics, which in turn permits the analysis and comparison of Java, aspectJ and CaesarJ implementations. Correlation analysis between cohesion and changeability has also been performed. The correlation factor value indicates that cohesion cannot be used as an indicator of changeability.

Towards aspect-oriented functional-structural plant modelling

Background and Aims Functional-structural plant models (FSPMs) are used to integrate knowledge and test hypotheses of plant behaviour, and to aid in the development of decision support systems. A significant amount of effort is being put into providing a sound methodology for building them. Standard techniques, such as procedural or object-oriented programming, are not suited for clearly separating aspects of plant function that criss-cross between different components of plant structure, which makes it difficult to reuse and share their implementations. The aim of this paper is to present an aspect-oriented programming approach that helps to overcome this difficulty. Methods The L-system-based plant modelling language L+C was used to develop an aspect-oriented approach to plant modelling based on multi-modules. Each element of the plant structure was represented by a sequence of L-system modules (rather than a single module), with each module representing an aspect of the element's function. Separate sets of productions were used for modelling each aspect, with context-sensitive rules facilitated by local lists of modules to consider/ignore. aspect weaving or communication between aspects was made possible through the use of pseudo-L-systems, where the strict-predecessor of a production rule was specified as a multimodule. Key Results The new approach was used to integrate previously modelled aspects of carbon dynamics, apical dominance and biomechanics with a model of a developing kiwifruit shoot. These aspects were specified independently and their implementation was based on source code provided by the original authors without major changes. Conclusions This new aspect-oriented approach to plant modelling is well suited for studying complex phenomena in plant science, because it can be used to integrate separate models of individual aspects of plant development and function, both previously constructed and new, into clearly organized, comprehensive FSPMs. In a f

Comprehensive aspect weaving for Java

aspect-oriented programming (AOP) has been successfully applied to application code thanks to techniques such as Java bytecode instrumentation. Unfortunately, with existing AOP frameworks for Java such as aspectJ, aspects cannot be woven into the standard Java class library. This restriction is particularly unfortunate for aspects that would benefit from comprehensive aspect weaving with complete method coverage, such as profiling or debugging aspects. In this article we present MAJOR, a new tool for comprehensive aspect weaving, which ensures that aspects are woven into all classes loaded in a Java Virtual Machine, including those in the standard Java class library. MAJOR includes the pluggable module CARAJillo, which supports efficient access to a complete and customizable calling context representation. We validate our approach with three case studies. Firstly, we weave existing profiling aspects with MAJOR which otherwise would generate incomplete profiles. Secondly, we introduce an aspect for memory leak detection that also benefits from comprehensive weaving. Thirdly, we present an aspect subsuming the functionality of ReCrash, an existing tool based on low-level bytecode instrumentation techniques that generates unit tests to reproduce program failures. Our aspect-based tools are concisely implemented in a few lines of code, and leverage MAJOR and CARAJillo for comprehensive aspect weaving and for efficient access to calling context information. Integration of Feature-oriented programming (FOP) and aspect-oriented programming (AOP) methodologies can overcome their individual limitations and thus superior software can be evolved. This approach has been investigated in evolving application software for a representative 'Event Management System' using Eclipse-based open source environment. The study concludes that this approach supports modular design and implementation of consistent, reusable, maintainable and cost effective 'Event Management Software System', tailored to the specific needs of the stakeholders.
