Type-directed weaving of aspects for polymorphically typed functional languages

Incorporating aspect-oriented paradigm to a polymorphically typed functional language enables the declaration of type-scoped advice, in which the effect of an aspect can be harnessed by introducing possibly polymorphic type constraints to the aspect. The amalgamation of aspect orientation and functional programming enables quick behavioral adaption of functions, clear separation of concerns and expressive type-directed programming. However, proper static weaving of aspects in polymorphic languages with a type-erasure semantics remains a challenge. In this paper, we describe a type-directed static weaving strategy, as well as its implementation, that supports static type inference and static weaving of programs written in an aspect-oriented polymorphically typed functional language, aspectFun. We show examples of type-scoped advice, identify the challenges faced with compile-time weaving in the presence of type-scoped advice, and demonstrate how various advanced aspect features can be handled by our techniques. Finally, we prove the correctness of the static weaving strategy with respect to the operational semantics of aspectFun. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Enhancing middleware support for architecture-based development through compositional weaving of styles

Architecture-based software development has been shown as an effective approach for managing the implementation complexity of large-scale software systems. Architecture-based development is often achieved with the help of a middleware, which provides implementation-level counterparts for the architectural modeling constructs. Such a middleware automatically ensures that implemented system accurately embodies the properties encoded in its architectural models. However, existing middlewares do not provide sufficient support for architectural styles. This is due to the crosscutting structure of styles that impacts the behavior of every other architectural construct, and hence the corresponding middleware facilities. We present an aspect-oriented approach that alleviates this problem by weaving the stylistic concerns with the rest of the middleware. The approach decouples stylistic concerns from other middleware facilities, which in turn improves the middleware's understandability and flexibility, and enables rapid composition of hybrid styles. We evaluate the approach and describe our experiences by providing support for several well-known styles using two open-source middleware platforms. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In ubiquitous environments, resources limitations and fluctuations combined with device mobility requires the dynamic adaptation of mobile applications. This paper reports on an extension of the MUSIC adaptation middleware to support aspect-oriented programming in order to handle cross-cutting adaptations. Basically, this extension specifies an architectural model for defining applications as a composition of aspects and components. The dynamic adaptation of an application in a given context is realised by selecting the appropriate component and aspect implementations using utility functions as a mean of optimising the overall QoS. Our approach and middleware are implemented and tested on top of OSGi framework.

Synchronization is a good candidate for an aspect in aspect-oriented programming (AOP) since programmers have to choose the best granularity of synchronization for the underlying hardware to obtain the best execution performance. If synchronization is an aspect, programmers can change the synchronization code independently of the rest of the program when the program runs on different hardware. However, existing AOP languages such as aspectJ have problems. They cannot select an arbitrary code region as a join point. Moreover, they cannot enforce weaving of a synchronization aspect. Since it is an alternative feature in feature modeling, at least one of available synchronization aspects must be woven. Otherwise, the program would be thread-unsafe. Since an aspect in aspectJ is inherently optional, programmers must be responsible for weaving it. To solve these problems, this paper proposes two new constructs for aspectJ, region cut and assertions for advice. Regioncut selects arbitrary code region as a join point and assertion for advice enforces weaving a mandatory advice. We implemented these constructs by extending the aspectBench compiler. We evaluated the design of our constructs by applying them to two open-source software products, Javassist and Hadoop.

aspect-oriented mechanisms are characterized by their join point models. A join point model has three components: join points, which are elements of language semantics;"a means of identifying join points";and "a means of affecting the behaviour at those join points." A pointcut-advice model is a dynamic join point model in which join points are points in program execution. Pointcuts select a set of join points, and advice affects the behaviour of the selected join points. In this model, join points are typically selected and advised independently of each other. That is, the relationships between join points are not taken into account in join point selection and advice. In practice, join points are often not independent. Instead, they form part of a higher-level operation that implements the intent of the developer (e.g. managing a resource). There are natural situations in which join points should be selected only if they play a specific role in that operation. We propose a new join point model that takes join point interrelationships into account and allows the designation of more complex computations as join points. Based on the new model, we have designed an aspect-oriented construct called a transactional point-cut (transcut). Transcuts select sets of interrelated join points and reify them into higher-level join points that can be advised. They share much of the machinery and intuition of pointcuts, and can be viewed as their natural extension. We have implemented a transcuts prototype as an extension to the aspectJ language and integrated it into the abc compiler. We present an example where a transcut is applied to implement recommended resource handling practices in the presence of exceptions within method boundaries.

Model Driven Architecture (MDA) is a development methodology taking model as center, it shift the focus of software development activity from coding to modeling, which is initiated by the Object Manage Group and based on UML and other standard etc. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is an emerging software engineering paradigm that improves separation of cross-cutting concerns as aspect in a program. Separation of concerns is an important principle for designing high quality software systems and is both applied in the MDA and aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD). The AOSD and MDA techniques seem to be complementary to each other;We provided a weaving-based model composition framework, adopted weaving technology in model composition. Model composition could be carried out automatically through model weaving framework. This is also an attempt to combine model transformation and model composition.

Reusability is important especially in Web application development because Web applications tend to be rapidly developed and frequently modified. There are several studies to improve the reusability by adapting modular techniques in software engineering. However, the reusability brought by previous studies is restricted to limited Web applications because the techniques are deeply depended on the specific framework or architecture. In this paper, we propose an approach of defining reusable components for multiple Web applications using a domain-specific aspect-oriented (AO) mechanism based on an abstraction model common to all Web applications. As a case study to confirm the effectiveness of the approach, we present four practical examples of reusable aspect components and apply them to two real-sized open source Web applications. The result of the case study shows the domain-specific AO mechanism is an effective platform to implement reusable functionalities common to many Web applications.

We have developed a tool, enbug, that intentionally induces errors into software in a controlled fashion. The robustness of students' code can be challenged by presenting exotic failure scenarios for testing, without Herculean efforts on the part of teaching assistants or instructors. Enbug also has applications in computer security and secure software courses, by being able to inject specific flaws into existing software for students to locate and exploit. The implementation of enbug is an example of tool reuse, through the automated (ab)use of a debugger.

The introduction of regulations such as the Sarbanes-Oxley act requires companies to ensure that appropriate controls are implemented in their business applications. Implementing and validating compliance measures in 'agile' companies is time consuming, costly, error-prone and a maintenance-intensive task. This paper presents an approach towards dynamically adapting a Service oriented Architecture (SOA) such that business applications remain compliant. In order to ensure compliance, a compliance checking mechanism for the SOA is needed. Upon detection of a threat/violation, the components of a business application are adapted using aspect-oriented programming (AOP). In this paper, we discuss the fundamental problems and we give an architectural description of our approach.

aspect-oriented programming is considered a promising new technology. As object-oriented programming did before, it is beginning to pervade all areas of software engineering. With its growing popularity, practitioners and academics alike are wondering whether they should start looking into it, or otherwise risk having missed an important development. The author of this essay finds that much of aspect-oriented programming's success seems to be based on the conception that it improves both modularity and the structure of code, while in fact, it works against the primary purposes of the two, namely independent development and understandability of programs. Not seeing any way of fixing this situation, he thinks the success of aspect-oriented programming to be paradoxical.
