aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is an emerging software engineering paradigm that improves separation of cross-cutting concerns as aspect in a program. Existing Object-oriented programming (OOP) languages suffer from a serious limitation in modularizing adequately cross-cutting concerns. Many concerns cross cut several classes in an Object-oriented system. At present, the AOP paradigm has expanded to all the lifecycle in the software development;as a result, aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) is becoming a new technique, which let developers identify the cross-cutting concerns in early stage of the lifecycle in order to reduce the complexity and indigestibility that arise from the cross-cutting concerns and improves flexibility, adaptability and reusability of the components used to compose the final software. We present, in this paper, a statecharts describes the aspectual State Model (ASM) based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to identify the cross-cutting concerns, and using a mature language aspectJ which is a seamless aspect-oriented extension to the Java programming language to write aspect codes.

Web services are the best way to solve cross-platform, cross-language, loosely coupled distributed systems in Web environment at present. But because of some crosscutting concerns such as logging, authorization, transaction, etc. in web services, the systems which are constructed by integrating web services have some problems caused by the code-tangling, code-scattering: the adaptability and reuse of web services are decreased;the systems are difficult to be maintained and extended. In order to solve the above problems, aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is introduced to web services, the crosscutting concerns are separated and realized individually as aspectual services and a weaver weaves them when the system runs. And after researching service-oriented architecture (SOA) and multi-tier architecture, a system architecture based on aspectual services and web services is proposed.

Current abstractions offered by the Object-oriented paradigm are insufficient to fully express all the concerns of a software system. For example, non-functional concerns namely cross-cutting concerns such as logging, tracing, or data persistence tend to be scattered and tangled all across the classes of the system. aspect-oriented programming (AOP), which allows for modularizing concerns has effectively solved the problem that the Object-oriented programming (OOP) has encountered. At present, the AOP paradigm has expanded to all the lifecycle of the software development, as a result, aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) is becoming a new technique, which has an important step of modeling the aspects. We present, in this paper, a statecharts describes the aspectual State Model (ASM) based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and its extension mechanism to identify the cross-cutting concerns, using a mature language aspectJ which is a seamless aspect-oriented extension to the Java programming language to write aspect codes.

Embedded software systems affect critical functions of our daily lives (e.g., software used in automobiles, aircraft control systems), and represent a significant investment by government, scientific and corporate institutions. Modern research approaches for software engineering and programming language design, such as aspect-oriented software development and model-driven engineering have been investigated as effective means for improving modularization and reuse of software. However, one research trend for embedded system development has focused primarily on the underlying hardware, neglecting the need of applying advanced software engineering techniques for the several million lines of code existing in the embedded domain. In this paper, we evaluate the above mentioned state-of-the-art techniques as a viable solution for the development, analysis and evolution of embedded software systems.

aspect-oriented programming is a promising approach to address separation of concerns. aspect-oriented programming languages address the problems of scattering and entanglement by providing an abstraction for specifying cross-cutting concerns in a modular manner. The relevant aspects are then composed to derive the desired implementation. However, current aspect-oriented programming languages only allow this composition to be specified in terms of programming language constructs. This is restrictive and can only be used for simple compositions. Many situations in practice need a richer composition context that cannot be expressed using programming language constructs. Models, being at a higher level of abstraction and closer to the problem domain, can be used to capture this information. We propose an approach to extend aspect-oriented programming with a composition mechanism that can make use of the information captured in models. We also outline an implementation of the proposed approach. The proposed approach has been used to seamlessly integrate model-centric and code-centric development.

Presents case studies for, and implementations of, synchronized block join points that together augment the capabilities of join points for synchronized methods in intercepting and modifying synchronization actions in distributed, Java-based, aspect oriented software. The models are applicable in any aspect oriented environment, but emphasis is placed on compatibility with aspectJ. The power of such a join point is first illustrated by analysing some case studies. While some such examples can be handled using aspects that intercept synchronized method calls, a fully general scheme is shown to need with Java synchronized blocks. The approach for recognising the synchronized block uses context exposure to provide full control of the thread behaviour when many threads compete to be executed. The proposed join point model is enhanced with a mechanism for removal of unnecessary synchronization, which is vital for reducing overheads associated with the lock. There is also a facility for re-introducing necessary synchronization that has previously been removed.

The aspect-oriented programming introduces the next step in the software design approaches in the sense of overcoming the imperfections in the object-oriented paradigm by separating the cross-cutting concerns and manipulating them in a separate manner. While the use of aspect-orientation attempts to tackle some of the issues with object-oriented approach, it raises some others. How far is the design quality improved by the use of aspect-orientation over object-orientation. What are common design trends among AO programs in comparison with OO programs? A comparison among design metrics for both these kinds of programs can help find answers to these questions. We have used Chidamber & Kemerer metrics suite to empirically compare design properties of AO programs with OO programs. Results from Chidamber & Kemerer metrics for eleven aspectJ benchmark programs and those for dozens of Java libraries and programs are analyzed. The experiment reveals few interesting design trends and some limitations of the used metrics suite.

Some security concerns are sensitive to flow of information in a program execution. The dataflow pointcut has been proposed by Masuhara and Kawauchi in order to easily implement such security concerns in aspect-oriented programming (AOP) languages. The pointcut identifies join points based on the origins of values. This paper presents a formal framework for this pointcut based on the lambda_calculus. Dataflow tags are propagated statically to track data dependencies between expressions. We introduce a static semantics for tag propagation and prove that it is consistent with respect to the dynamic semantics of the propagation. We instrument the static effect-based type system to propagate tags, match and inject advices. This static approach can be used to minimize the cost of dataflow pointcuts by reducing the runtime overhead since much of the dataflow information would be available statically and at the same time it can be used for verification. The proposed semantics for advice weaving is in the spirit of aspectJ where advices are injected before, after, or around the join points that are matched by their respective pointcuts. Inspired from the formal framework, the aspectJ compiler ajc is extended with the dataflow pointcut that tracks data dependencies inside methods.

aspect-oriented programming is providing a new way of handling cross-cutting concerns (also known as aspects) in a modularized way. A number of languages, such as aspectJ, Spring, and aspectWorkz, have been developed to weave modularized aspects with the base program. Similarly a lot of research has been conducted to improve the composition of aspect models with the primary model. Although these suggested approaches have improved the implementation of aspect, this paradigm is still lacking aspect representation in the earlier phases of software development. Our proposed aspect model addresses this problem and suggests a process-modeling approach for identifying and representing aspects throughout the life cycle of system development.

Assertions or formal program specifications are fundamental to build more reliable software. One of the most important applications of assertions is found in the Design by Contract metaphor: pre-conditions, invariants and post-conditions. Current assertion approaches use some software technology that relies on simple mechanisms;however their actual implementation can be both quite complex and instrusive. A good knowledge of program algorithms is required to introduce enhancements which crosscut basic algorithms and structures. In this paper, we propose a non-intrusive assertion verification implementation. We have used aspect-orientation and provide correctness in order to decide on the validity of assertions.
