aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a technique for modularizing crosscutting concerns (CCCs). A variety of CCCs can be found in typical Web applications. Most CCCs are scattered over Web-specific events such as page requests. AOWP, a PHP-based AOP framework, provides Web-specific aspect instantiations for dealing with session management and pointcut & advice mechanisms for capturing Web-specific events. CCCs in Web applications can be clearly modularized by introducing AOWP.

Refactoring is necessary in large software projects and an aspect-oriented approach can help to maintain concerns in the source code. While tools for object-oriented refactoring are the usual part of development environments, support for aspect-oriented refactoring is minimal. We analyzed object-oriented bad smells applicable for an aspect-oriented approach and propose a method for the detection of crosscutting concerns and consecutive refactoring.

Information systems based on the World Wide Web increased the impact of concurrent programs. Such increase demands the definition of methods for obtaining safe and efficient implementations of concurrent programs, since the complexity of implementation and tests in concurrent environments is bigger than in sequential environments. This work defined guidelines to restructure object-oriented software in order to modularize concurrency control using aspect-oriented programming. Those guidelines axe supported by a concurrency control implementation that guarantees system correctness without redundant concurrency control, both increasing performance and guaranteeing safety. We define abstract aspects that constitute a simple aspect framework that can be reused to implement concurrency control in other applications. The achieved modularization makes the concurrency control easy to evolve and decreases the complexity of other parts of the software, such as business and data management modules, by decoupling concurrency control code from them.

Legacy systems contain critical and complex business code that has been in use for a long time. This code is difficult to understand, maintain, and evolve, in large part due to crosscutting concerns: software system features, such as persistence, logging, and error handling, whose implementation is spread across multiple modules. aspect-oriented techniques separate crosscutting concerns from the base code, using separate modules called aspects and, thus, simplify the legacy code. aspect mining techniques identify aspect candidates so that the legacy code can then be refactored into aspects. This study shows that model-based clustering using a carefully selected vector-space of features can be more effective than extant aspect mining methods based on heuristic methods as such hierarchical or partitional clustering. Three model-based algorithms were experimentally compared against existing heuristic methods, such as k-means clustering and agglomerative hierarchical clustering, using six different vector-space models. Model-based algorithms performed better in not spreading the methods of the concerns across the multiple clusters and were significantly better at partitioning the data such that, given an ordered list of clusters, fewer clusters and methods were needed to be analyzed to find all the concerns. In addition, model-based algorithms automatically determined the optimal number of clusters, a great advantage over the heuristic-based algorithms. Lastly, the newly defined vector-space models performed better, relative to aspect mining, than the previously defined vector-space models

This paper proposes language concepts that facilitate the separation of an application into independent reusable building blocks and the integration of pre-build generic software components into applications that have been developed by third party vendors. A key element of our approach arc on-demand remodularizations, meaning that the abstractions and vocabulary of an existing code base are translated into the vocabulary understood by a set of components that are connected by a common collaboration interface. This general concept allows us to mix-and-match remodularizations and components on demand.

Effectiveness of a software development depends directly upon how efficiently testing techniques have been carried out on the software. Testing starts as soon as requirements are being collected for the software development process. It was a myth at earlier days that software testing can only be carried out after implementation phase. Now it has been experimentally proved that in order to reduce the overall cost and time for the software development process, it is necessary to carry out testing from the first phase of software development life cycle. Among a large number of software testing methodologies, mutation testing is one of the testing methodology in which testing is performed by introducing faults into the program. Mutation testing focuses on fault identification by examining the efficiency of test suite. Many researchers have contributed into the field of Mutation testing in aspect oriented systems. In this paper, various mutation operators are proposed to detect faults in aspectJ Programs.

Many organizations seek to improve the maintainability and scalability of their computing systems by migrating from a conventional monolithic architecture to a microservice architecture (MSA). Note that service identification is the most crucial step in architecture migration. In the current study, we developed a microservice identification scheme based on analyzing database access to account for the importance of the pattern "Database Per Service" in microservices design. The proposed MIADA (Microservices Identification using Analysis for Database Access) system facilitates the clustering of service endpoints used in the identification and creation of microservices. The feasibility and efficacy of the proposed MIADA approach were evaluated using two existing service-oriented software projects, PlanApproval and CoCoME. The evaluation results show that the MIADA approach can effectively recommend appropriate clusters of service endpoints to construct microservices.

Use cases are widely used to express what software systems are supposed to provide in terms of an interaction between the users and the system. Without a particular effort to preserve them, use cases dissolve in source code turning the task of locating their implementation into a major problem of change request realization. While aspect-oriented programming offers one solution to retaining use cases, there are also opportunities in the mainstream object-oriented programming languages that have no reliable support for aspect-oriented programming. This paper brings an approach to retaining use cases in source code by object-oriented means that employs three techniques: traits, the Event pattern (extracted from the Zend's framework EventManager component), and the Front Controller pattern. By these techniques, all possible kinds of use cases with the exception of specialization use cases are addressed: peer use cases, extension use cases, and inclusion use cases. Use cases are not fully modularized as in aspect-oriented software development with use cases, but the approach ensures their parts can be easily traced. The approach has been evaluated with respect to traceability on an online shop application demonstrating how a use case can be added, removed, or altered.

Enforcing authorization for web applications must be done on the server side. Thus, either the backend or the persistent storage are suitable layers. From a developer's point of view, we want to use a framework to automate creating persistent storage models and to map the entities between storage and backend. However, not all such frameworks offer sufficient authorization support. From a scientist's perspective, we want to generally combine the filtering capabilities of the persistent storage with the advantages of using a mapper framework. Therefore, we propose to intercept the communication between the backend and the mapper framework and thus provide a central point of authorization. This offers the advantage that developers are unlikely to inadvertently introduce security vulnerabilities. The request is modified by adding a filter to return only authorized entities. Filtering directly in the storage saves performance and bandwidth besides reducing development and maintenance effort.

Code scattering and code tangling affect software development in many ways, including poor traceability of requirements, low productivity, poor overall quality and increased efforts for software maintenance. One proposed solution to solve these issues is to use a specific software construction known as aspect. aspect-oriented programming (AOP) has been widely studied since its introduction with the promise of improving modularization by addressing crosscutting concerns. Few studies on empirical evaluation of the benefits of aspect-oriented paradigm were published. Results presented in these studies are frequently subjective, and some studies are non-conclusive. In addition, these studies are based on the implementation of only one or two crosscutting concerns into aspects, and the evaluation is based on few software metrics. In this article, the evaluation of AOP implementation through software metrics is proposed. The main idea is to implement crosscutting concerns as aspects, with focus on those that were not given properly attention in the literature. Two softwares were used as case studies.
