Alternative semantics for aspect-oriented abstractions can be defined by language designers using extensible aspect compiler frameworks. However, application developers are prevented from tailoring the language semantics in an application-specific manner. To address this problem, we propose art architecture for aspect-oriented languages with an explicit meta-interface to language semantics. We demonstrate the benefits of such an architecture by presenting several scenarios in which aspect-oriented programs use the meta-interface of the language to tailor its semantics to a particular application execution context.

We propose in this paper a new approach for the dynamic enforcement of Web services security, which is based on a synergy between aspect-oriented programming (AOP) and composition of Web services. Security policies are specified as aspects. The elaborated aspects are then weaved (integrated) in the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) process at runtime. The main contributions of our approach are threefold: (1) separating the business and security concerns of composite Web services, and hence developing them separately (2) allowing the modification of the Web service composition at run time and (3) providing modularity for modeling cross-cutting concerns between Web services. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by developing a Flight System (FS) that is composed of several Web services. First, a RBAC (Role Based Access Control) model for the flight system, which we called RBAC-FS, is elaborated. Afterwards, the Web services that implement the security features are developed. Finally, the BPEL aspects that integrate the security functionalities dynamically into the BPEL process are created. The devised aspects realize the elaborated RBAC-FS model and provide authentication and access control features to the flight system. Case studies and experimental results are also presented to defend our propositions.

This paper proposes and implements a rigorous method for studying the dynamic behaviour of aspect) programs. As part of this methodology several new metrics specific to aspect) programs are proposed and tools for collecting the relevant metrics are presented. The major tools consist of: (1) a modified version of the aspect) compiler that tags bytecode instructions with an indication of the cause of their generation, such as a particular feature of aspect);and (2) a modified version of the *J dynamic metrics collection tool which is composed of a JVMPI-based trace generator and an analyzer which propagates tags and computes the proposed metrics. This dynamic propagation is essential, and thus this paper contributes not only new metrics, but also non-trivial ways of computing them. We furthermore present a set of benchmarks that exercise a wide range of aspectJ's features, and the metrics that we measured on these benchmarks. The results provide guidance to aspect) users on how to avoid efficiency pitfalls, to aspect) implementors on promising areas for future optimization, and to tool builders on ways to understand the runtime behaviour of aspect).

BISM (Bytecode-level Instrumentation for Software Monitoring) is a lightweight Java bytecode instrumentation tool which features an expressive high-level control-flow-aware instrumentation language. The language follows the aspect-oriented programming paradigm by adopting the joinpoint model, advice inlining, and separate instrumentation mechanisms. BISM provides joinpoints ranging from bytecode instruction to method execution, access to comprehensive context information, and instrumentation methods. BISM runs in two modes: build-time and load-time. We demonstrate BISM effectiveness using two experiments: a security scenario and a general runtime verification case. The results show that BISM instrumentation incurs low runtime and memory overheads.

We propose an advice mechanism called Chop&Graft for non-local flow control. It offers a novel chop pointcut that lets a piece of advice terminate the current execution, and graft and retry operators that resume and restart the terminated executions. By using pointcuts for specifying the region of termination, the mechanism is more robust and more concise than the traditional exception handling mechanisms that rely on names or exception classes. The paper presents the design of the mechanism along with the sketches of two implementations using delimited continuations or threads and exceptions.

Future advanced embedded computing systems are expected to dynamically adapt applications' behavior and runtime system according to, e.g., usage contexts, operating environments, resources' availability, and battery energy levels. Besides application's functionalities provided by high-level and/or executable binary codes, code for specifying strategies/policies to extend typical functionalities with adaptability behavior is required. A domain-specific language, able to program this adaptability behavior, will allow developers to specify strategies for adaptation, will improve portability, and will help tools to map those strategies to the target system. This paper presents our recent ideas for programming strategies focused on runtime adaptability. The ideas are exposed using extensions to LARA, an aspect-oriented programming language, agnostic to the target language and system. We show examples of using LARA to specify strategies and we comment on the possible implementations to make viable those strategies.

aspect oriented programming (AOP) aims at addressing the problem of the crosscutting concerns (e. g. logging, validation, transaction etc.), those functionalities that are scattered among several modules in a given system. aspects can be defined to modularize such concerns. In this work, we focus on the most popular MVC pattern in software architecture pattern, and introduce the aspect-oriented programming ideas into the MVC model with Unified Modeling Language (UML), also we propose a model of aspectoriented MVC pattern, which extracts crosscutting concerns of going through the system to form an aspect layer and uses the configuration file to statement the point of weaving. To assess the effects of the idea on MVC pattern, an actual system is carried out. In the end, we report the results of the pattern of the feasibility and superiority.

The increasing size and complexity of distributed systems create a need to raise the level of abstraction for their development. This need becomes critical for pervasive computing where non-functional properties, such as security, must be guaranteed. Architecture description languages (ADLs) propose a promising approach to coping with the size and complexity of pervasive computing systems. A system is defined by a high-level description that may be used to produce a programming framework. However, non-functional properties are not specifically addressed by existing ADL works. To address this issue aspect-oriented programming is a well-proven technique to properly modularize non-functional concerns that can be dealt with by weaving dedicated code into a program. In this paper, we present Diaaspect, an aspect-oriented language for an ADL. ADLs are a key to our approach because they expose features enabling an accurate coordination of aspects. We demonstrate the expressiveness of Diaaspect with two examples of security policies in pervasive computing. We also show how, combining the knowledge of the architecture description with aspect code, improves aspect weaving in the implementation code.

To successfully compete in the software marketplace, modern mobile applications must run on multiple competing platforms, such as Android, iOS, and Windows Phone. Companies producing mobile applications spend substantial amounts of time, effort, and money to port applications across platforms. Creating individual program versions for different platforms further exacerbates the maintenance burden. This paper presents Cloud Twin, a novel approach to natively executing the functionality of a mobile application written for another platform. The functionality is accessed by means of dynamic cross-platform replay, in which the source application's execution in the cloud is mimicked natively on the target platform. The reference implementation of Cloud Twin natively emulates the behavior of Android applications on a Windows Phone. Specifically, Cloud Twin transmits, via web sockets, the UI actions performed on the Windows Phone to the cloud server, which then mimics the received actions on the Android emulator. The UI updates on the emulator are efficiently captured by means of aspect oriented programming and sent back to be replayed on the Windows Phone. Our case studies with third-party applications indicate that the Cloud Twin approach can become a viable solution to the heterogeneity of the mobile application market.

The potential of aspect-oriented programming to represent cross-cutting concerns as reusable components has yet to be fully realized. Indeed, authors have detailed significant challenges in creating reusable aspect component libraries. Proposed solutions include restricting the power of aspects upfront, inferring concern interaction, and shaping base code to conform to abstract design rules. Another proposed strategy is to reduce obliviousness in return for increased modularity by extending aspectJ with explicit join points (EJPs). This paper presents the results of an empirical case study that aides in the understanding of the tradeoffs between obliviousness and modularity. We present a refactoring of the exception handling concern for three real-life Java applications to use EJPs instead of oblivious aspects. The empirical differences between this version and an equivalent oblivious version are analyzed. Finally, we present guiding principles on how to strike a favorable balance between obliviousness and modularity.
