Previous algorithms for feedback-directed unit test generation iteratively create sequences of API calls by executing partial tests and by adding new API calls at the end of the test. These algorithms are challenged by a popular class of APIs: higher-order functions that receive callback arguments, which often are invoked asynchronously. Existing test generators cannot effectively test such APIs because they only sequence API calls, but do not nest one call into the callback function of another. This paper presents Nessie, the first feedback-directed unit test generator that supports nesting of API calls and that tests asynchronous callbacks. Nesting API calls enables a test to use values produced by an API that are available only once a callback has been invoked, and is often necessary to ensure that methods are invoked in a specific order. The core contributions of our approach are a tree-based representation of unit tests with callbacks and a novel algorithm to iteratively generate such tests in a feedback-directed manner. We evaluate our approach on ten popular JavaScript libraries with both asynchronous and synchronous callbacks. The results show that, in a comparison with LambdaTester, a state of the art test generation technique that only considers sequencing of method calls, Nessie finds more behavioral differences and achieves slightly higher coverage. Notably, Nessie needs to generate significantly fewer tests to achieve and exceed the coverage achieved by the state of the art.

Many-core and heterogeneous architectures now require programmers to compose multiple asynchronous programming model to fully exploit hardware capabilities. As a shared-memory parallel programming model, OpenMP has the responsibility of orchestrating the suspension and progression of asynchronous operations occurring on a compute node, such as MPI communications or CUDA/HIP streams. Yet, specifications only come with the task detach(event) API to suspend tasks until an asynchronous operation is completed, which presents a few drawbacks. In this paper, we introduce the design and implementation of an extension on the taskwait construct to suspend a task until an asynchronous event completion. It aims to reduce runtime costs induced by the current solution, and to provide a standard API to automate portable task suspension solutions. The results show twice less overheads compared to the existing task detach clause.

Smart charging adds more sophisticated communication to the charging process of electric vehicles, thus enabling new features like time scheduling. Therefore, it can provide a valuable contribution to balancing the power grid, as the charging process can be scheduled in a way, that load peaks in thegrid may be reduced. The protocols necessary for smart charging, such as ISO 15118, are currently being standardized. In this paper a modular software implementation for smart charging stations is proposed. As programming platform *** is chosen, due to its asynchronous programming, as well as its non blocking functionality. For evaluation purposes this software is implemented on a demonstrator, which is made mostly from off-the-shelf modules.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of data analytics, interactive applications such as those developed with Shiny, an R-based web-centric framework, are increasingly used for real-time data visualization and analysis. However, managing the scalability and concurrency of R Shiny applications poses significant challenges. This paper presents a comprehensive approach to deploying Shiny applications on Kubernetes, a robust container orchestration platform, to enhance scalability, manageability, and resilience. We explore the architecture required to containerize Shiny applications effectively, including the integration of Kubernetes with the open-source Shiny server. Performance evaluations demonstrate that our approach ensures seamless scalability and improved load handling as well as minimizes downtime and operational costs. The findings suggest that Kubernetes is an effective solution for organizations looking to scale their Shiny applications, or other single-threaded applications, in production environments.

The models@*** paradigm promotes the use of models during the execution of cyber-physical systems to represent their context and to reason about their runtime behaviour. However, current modeling techniques do not allow to cope at the same time with the large-scale, distributed, and constantly changing nature of these systems. In this paper, we introduce a distributed models@*** approach, combining ideas from reactive programming, peer-to-peer distribution, and large-scale models@***. We define distributed models as observable streams of chunks that are exchanged between nodes in a peer-to-peer manner. A lazy loading strategy allows to transparently access the complete virtual model from every node, although chunks are actually distributed across nodes. Observers and automatic reloading of chunks enable a reactive programming style. We integrated our approach into the Kevoree Modeling Framework and demonstrate that it enables frequently changing, reactive distributed models that can scale to millions of elements and several thousand nodes.

Experimentation is an essential step for realistic evaluation of wireless network protocols. The evaluation methodology entails controllable environment conditions and a rigorous and efficient experiment control and orchestration for a variety of scenarios. Existing experiment control tools such as OMF often lack in efficiency in terms of resource management and rely on abstractions that hide the details about the wireless set-up. In this paper, we propose nepi-ng, an efficient experiment control tool that leverages job oriented programming model and efficient single-thread execution of parallel programs using asyncio. nepi-ng provides an efficient and modular fine grain synchronization mechanism for networking experiments with light software dependency footprint. We present and discuss our design choices and compare to the state of the art tools, mainly OMF.

Facing the limited resource of smartphones, asynchronous programming significantly improves the performance of Android applications. Android provides several packaged components to ease the development of asynchronous programming. Among them, the AsyncTask component is widely used by developers since it is easy to implement. However, the abuse of AsyncTask component can decrease responsiveness and even lead to crashes. By investigating the Android Developer Documentation and technical forums, we summarize five misuse patterns about AsyncTask. To detect them, we propose a flow, context, object and field-sensitive interprocedural static analysis approach. Specifically, the static analysis includes typestate analysis, reference analysis and loop analysis. Based on the AsyncTask-related information obtained during static analysis, we check the misuse according to predefined detection rules. The proposed approach is implemented into a tool called AsyncChecker. We evaluate AsyncChecker on a self-designed benchmark suite called AsyncBench and 1,759 real-world apps. AsyncChecker finds 17,946 misused AsyncTask instances in 1,417 real-world apps (80.6%). The precision, recall and F-measure of AsyncChecker on real-world applications are 97.2%, 89.8% and 0.93, respectively. Compared with existing tools, AsyncChecker can detect more asynchronous problems. We report the misuse problems to developers via GitHub. Several developers have confirmed and fixed the problems found by AsyncChecker. The result implies that our approach is effective and developers do take the misuse of AsyncTask as a serious problem.

asynchronous programming style has been widely adopted for a variety of reasons one such being the rise of Web applications. Using non-blocking operations is a major approach to enforcing asynchronous programming. A non-blocking operation requires decomposing a module that consists of a set of blocking operations into more than two modules, in turn, leading to a variety of challenges such as callback spaghetti and callback hell. This paper presents SyncAS, a library specification to address these two problems. This library specification follows the ECMAScript standard;indeed, we provide a prototype implementation for ActionScript3. SyncAS proposes a novel approach that enables programmers to virtually block a program execution and restart it at arbitrary points of the program, instead of waiting for a callback execution. As a result, programmers do not need to decompose a module even if nonblocking operations are adopted. SyncAS uses aspect-oriented programming to control the program execution in an oblivious manner.

Algebraic effect handlers generalize many control-flow abstractions that are implemented specially in most languages, like exception handling, iterators, or backtracking. In this article, we show how we can implement full support for asynchronous programming as a library using just algebraic effect handlers. The consistent type driven approach also leads naturally to powerful abstractions like block-scoped interleaving, cancellation, and timeout's that are lacking in other major asynchronous frameworks. We also introduce the concept of ambient state to reason about state that is local to the current strand of asynchronous execution.

Processing data at different rates is generally a hard problem in reactive programming. Buffering problems, lags, and concurrency issues often occur. Many of these problems are clock errors, where data at different rates is combined incorrectly. Techniques to avoid clock errors, such as type-level clocks and deterministic scheduling, exist in the field of synchronous programming, but are not implemented in general-purpose languages like Haskell. Rhine is a clock-safe library for synchronous and asynchronous Functional Reactive programming (FRP). It separates the aspects of clocking, scheduling and resampling from each other, and ensures clock-safety at the type level. Concurrent communication is encapsulated safely. Diverse reactive subsystems can be combined in a coherent, declarative data-flow framework, while correct interoperability of data at different rates is guaranteed by type-level clocks. This provides a general-purpose framework that simplifies multi-rate FRP systems and can be used for game development, media applications, GUIs and embedded systems, through a flexible API with many reusable components.
