Reusable software documentation with phrase annotations

Problem: Reoccurring software documentation fragments called documentation phrases crosscut documentation body and introduce undesired redundancy. The redundancy imposes problems with software documentation development and evolution. Objective: We want to reduce the negative effect caused by documentation phrases redundancy by centralizing the documentation phrases sources. This way a documentation phrase will have a single source that can be used for maintenance and evolution. Method: We discuss the nature of documentation phrases and argue for the support of their parametrization. We present a new documentation phrase instantiation method based on source code annotations. The provides free IDE support for writing documentation and is aided by our tool prototype. Results and contributions: Our contributions of this paper include identification of documentation phrase parametrization and the annotation- based documentation phrase instantiation. The annotation- based documentation phrase instantiation method enables to reduce the effort needed for documentation development and evolution.

This paper discusses a generative programming technique based on attribute-oriented programming (source code annotations) and aspect-oriented programming. We propose an annotation-based generator framework that combines these two techniques to provide a rapid and easy-to-use implementation options for annotation-based generators. The framework is inspired by internals of the industrial rapid application development tool Spring Roo. We discuss how the technique used in Spring Roo can be enhanced using Convention over Configuration principle. The paper briefly presents the generator framework prototype - AnBaG. We conclude with a discussion that compares the Spring Roo generation with AnBaG.

attribute-oriented programming (source code annotations) is a program level marking technique that enables enrichment of program elements with custom metadata. In this paper we hypothesize that there is a correspondence between source code annotations and conventional formal languages in general. We analyze our observations about source code annotations from three aspects of language description: concrete syntax, abstract syntax, and semantics. The discussion provides evidence of the hypothesized correspondence and we use it as a basis for our definition of an annotation-based language (abbreviated: @L). However, the analysis also shows that compared to conventional formal languages, source code annotations have some specificities mainly connected to their binding to host program elements. The presented analysis contributes to the field of attribute-oriented programming by discussing the relationship between annotations and conventional formal languages, and by surveying relational idioms in annotations' usage that can be inspirational for annotations' authors.

Due to data-driven application nature and its increasing complexity, developing its user interface can be a repetitive and time-consuming activity. Consequently, developers tend to focus more on the user interface aspects and less on business related code. In this paper, we're presenting an alternative approach to graphical user interface development for data-driven applications, that allows developers to refocus on the source code and concentrate their efforts on application core logic. The key concept behind our approach is the generation of concrete graphical user interface from a source code based model, which includes the original source code metadata and non-intrusive declarative language extensions that describes the user inter-face structure. Concrete user interface implementation will be delegated to specialized software packages, developed by external entities, that provides complete graphical user interfaces services to the application. When applying our approach, we're expecting faster graphical user interface development.

Some Object Relational Mapping tools already use a similar concept to handle interoperability between the data layer and the business layer. Also, concrete user interface implementation will be delegated to specialized software packages, developed by external entities, that provide complete graphical user interfaces services to the application. When applying our approach, we expect faster graphical user interface development, allowing developers to refocus on the source code and concentrate their efforts on application core logic.

Metadata-based frameworks are those that process their logic based on the metadata of the classes whose instances they are working with. Many recent frameworks use this to get a higher reuse level and to be more suitably adapted to the application needs. However, there is not yet a complete best practices documentation or reference architecture for the development of frameworks by using the metadata approach. As a result, this paper presents a pattern language that addresses preliminarily the internal structure of metadata-based frameworks, helping in the understanding and development of such kind of framework.
