Notes on averaging over acyclic digraphs and discrete coverage control

In this paper we Study averaging algorithms and coverage control laws in a unified light. First, we characterize the convergence properties of averaging algorithms over acyclic digraphs with fixed and controlled-switching topology. Second, we introduce and study novel discrete coverage control laws, which are useful in practical implementations of coverage strategies. We characterize the close relationship of the novel discrete control laws with continuous coverage control laws and with averaging algorithms over a class of a cyclic digraphs, that we term discrete Voronoi graphs. These results provide a unified framework to model a vast class of distributed optimization problems. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Power definition is established and accepted in electrical literature for quite some time, but non-active power definitions are another story. In this paper we will use two power definitions with improved averaging algorithm for calculating active and reactive power of an arc furnace plant. Both of these definitions are easy to implement in practical applications. Since rated frequency of the plant is 50 Hz, with a 128 ps sampling time, there are 156.25 samples per cycle. Non-integer number of samples would result in cyclic calculation error. This paper proposes an optimized averaging algorithm to account for asynchronous sampling rate. In the algorithm, the remaining 0.25 of the sample is considered as 157th sample with quarter of normal value. Simulated results from sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal voltage and current data show that the optimized algorithm helps to improve accuracy of the calculated power components. Considering an actual Electrical Arc Furnace (EAF) Plant with 90 to 108 MVA total apparent power, the measured voltage and current data are used to calculate active and reactive powers. Using simulation results both methods with normal and optimized algorithm are analyzed.

Images provided by various remote sensing satellites are multispectral, low resolution, and panchromatic, high resolution, which are fused, enlarging the low resolution images to make them the same size as the panchromatic ones. Panchromatic images have good spatial resolution but only one spectral band and multispectral images typically have four or eight bands but are four times lower in spatial resolution than a panchromatic image. Image fusion of this type seeks to combine the best feature of the high spatial panchromatic image with the low spatial multispectral image to obtain an image with high spatial and spectral resolution. Several techniques have been developed to perform this fusion however the techniques with low computational resource consumption are EIHS algorithm, Brovey algorithm, averaging algorithm. To compare them, in this work, natural color photographs are taken, from which high resolution monochromatic and lower resolution chromatic images are obtained to emulate the real situation. The low resolution color images obtained were interpolated using three satellite image interpolation techniques. The fusion techniques were evaluated, obtaining the quantitative spectral and spatial ERGAS indices and the RMSE. The EIHS and Brovey techniques were found to produce artifacts because the color component values can fall above or below the representation interval [0,255]. After correcting this issue, it was found that the EIHS and Brovey methods, in that order, produced the lowest RMSE, followed by the averaging method. Since this result proved to be inconsistent with that obtained with the mean ERGAS, a new normalized mean ERGAS that gives a better indication of fusion quality, matching the result given by the RMSE, was proposed to be used instead.

In this paper the accuracy analysis of the proposed dissolved oxygen measurement system based on the Clark's cell and the PSoC configurable mixed signal array chip is performed. In that process critical sources of errors are determined and associated errors are measured. The temperature, as the most affecting parameter of oxygen measurements, is analyzed in greater detail. Monitoring and regulation of temperature of the sample is crucial for precision oxygen concentration measurements. In order to achieve optimal accuracy level, system construction considerations are discussed and averaging algorithm and two point calibration methods are applied.

Applications of Digital Signal Processing inflict substantial constraints on area, speed, power dissipation and cost. ASIC, DSP and FPGA are the different tools to meet the constraints. In most of the situations where signals are highly fluctuating i.e. signals are varying with time, fixed filters which are designed with the fixed parameters cannot be used therefore one can go for adaptive filters. For the cancellation of noise signal adaptive filtering technique is used. In many applications of noise cancellation the changes in signal is quite fast. This requires adaptive algorithm, which converge rapidly. From this point of view LMS and averaging algorithms suit these situations best. LMS algorithm is one of the most used algorithms in many signal processing applications. Unfortunately LMS algorithm has high computation complexity and stability problems. In order to overcome these problems averaging algorithm can be used, where high convergence rate cab be achieved compare to that of LMS algorithm.

More than 10% of the population in developing countries suffers from blindness. Those impaired can be suffering from birth or eventually might have lost their sight. The 'Foresight', a novel technology brought out in this paper provides a new, multiple sensor facility with a distance and speed prediction algorithm to aid the visually impaired. A five independent Ultrasonic sensors with a distance and speed detection of the obstacles will help the blind person to navigate the path as he moves. The averaging algorithm proposed will make spurious dynamic changes in the obstacles to be more measurable and help to develop a robust system. The technology proposed in developing the aid for visually impaired has been transferred on to a set of customized microcontroller target boards in the form of a wearable device. The product has been tested on visually impaired children in blind school and the ease of movement of the blind while wearing the proposed device and the other existing devices have been compared.
