WorkstationOperator Interaction in 4.0 Era: WOI 4.0

Currently machine operator interface is mainly focused on providing the operator with easy control over the production processes and easy access to related information. However, myriad of recent technological advances in variety of fields including AI, raise the question of what could be added to the operator-machine interaction capabilities and how. This article explores the possibilities to harness new capabilities in cognitive and behavioral knowledge as well as AI and “Industry 4.0” literature in order to outline the architectural framework and capabilities of future work-stationoperator interaction as a principal component of the humanmachine interaction in the “Industry 4.0” era. The proposed system is named “WorkstationOperator Interaction 4.0” (WOI 4.0). The equipment's capabilities allows an adaptive ongoing interaction that aims to improve operator performance, safety, well-being, and satisfaction, as well as production measures. The paper describes the main elements of the proposed WOI 4.0 architecture, and illustrates a case of smart machineoperator interactions. The contributions, limitations, and implications of the proposed WOI 4.0 system in the “Industry 4.0” arena are discussed, and future research directions are presented. © 2018

Extended Body-Angles Algorithm to recognize activities within intelligent environments

Machine learning methods have been proven to be a useful and powerful mechanism in classification problems and pattern recognition. It is possible to classify into different categories on the basis of a training set of data through a discrete number of characteristics and without knowing the whole intrinsic information. For that, those methods are widely extended to address Activity Recognition. One of the limitations of traditional machine learning methods is the need of a large training dataset to get an effective model with high accuracy levels. This issue is the main motivation of the present work that proposes the named Extended Body-Angles Algorithm, a method able to recognize movements through single samples of modelled movements using Kinect. Their functioning is based on the Body-Angles Algorithm. This manuscript deepens into the detection of postures (Body-Angles Algorithm) that has been generalized to movements (Extended Body-Angles Algorithm), describing also the results of the algorithm evaluation.

Human-computer systems that treat context simply as enumerated facts, rules, or axioms about the surrounding physical and social environment will always have trouble handling information requiring human pragmatic interpretation. One way to overcome such limitations is to draw upon human pragmatic awareness to create hybrid systems capable of both extracting large quantities of data and processing that data in a way that is meaningful to users.

Web application is the most common and important way to access information on the Internet. It is necessary to research how to perceive the updated Internet information according to user's interests. In this chapter, the concept and realization method of Web-aware is proposed from the viewpoint of context-aware for the first time. A model of Web-aware is given in the environment of cloud computing as well. The analysis in this chapter shows that the application of Web-aware can reduce the traffic when access to the Internet, especially in mobile environment.

Indoor location information is important for the awareness computing environment. One single location sensor always is not accurate and applicable enough for providing the right service to the user. In this paper, an OSGi based simulation system is introduced firstly, and then we propose a framework to support the combination of several weak location sensors. With this combination model, multiple weak location sensors can work together to provide the better location aware service to the user. The experiment platform which consists of RFID array location sensor, RF sensor, pressure sensor and other sensors can work together in the OSGi based simulation system, experiment results show that the assembly of multiple weak sensors do better than the solo sensor. It can help the designers to achieve the better cost-performance for the awareness applications between various possible combinations.

In this study, we introduce a noisy environment-aware speech enhancement system, which can be used in human-robot interaction (HRI) application for command recognition. In order to effectively filter different noises and improve speech recognition rates, the proposed system adopts automatic noise cancellation that is combined with independent component analysis (ICA) and subspace speech enhancement (SSE). Furthermore, it can automatically decide when to use noise reduction according to SNRs of the detected noisy speeches at any time (using proposed noisy environment-aware determination). The experimental results show that our proposed system is suitable for various types of noisy environments, and it is capable of improving the speech quality for recognition. Our proposed system can enhance SNRs by about 20dB, which is higher than those of original noisy speeches.

People have developed a variety of conventions for negotiating face to face interruptions. The physical distribution of teams, however, together with the use of computer mediated communication and awareness systems, fundamentally alters what information is available to a person considering an interruption of a remote collaborator. This paper presents a detailed comparison between self-reports of interruptibility, collected from participants over extended periods in their actual work environment, and estimates of this interruptibility, provided by a second set of participants based on audio and video recordings. Our results identify activities and environmental cues that affect participants' ability to correctly estimate interruptibility. We show, for example, that a closed office door had a significant effect on observers' estimation of interruptibility, but did not have an effect on participants' reports of their own interruptibility. We discuss our findings and their importance for successful design of computer-mediated communication and awareness systems. © Copyright 2007 ACM.
