"C" shaped dual polarized dielectric resonator antenna for the microwave imaging of breast tumor using beam-forming algorithms

In this article, an ultra-wideband (UWB) monostatic radar based microwave imaging (MWI) approach is proposed to detect the presence and localize the position of breast tumor in women (usually greater than 45 years of age). For this purpose, a "C" shaped elliptically polarized DRA (dielectric resonator antenna) with an impedance bandwidth of 7.3 GHz (i.e., 3.4-10.7 GHz) covering the UWB has been proposed as a sensor to record the backscattered S parameter signals from the breast tissues. This is done by rotating the proposed DRA in monostatic radar configuration around the breast phantom with an interval of 30 degrees in elevation (0-180) and azimuthal planes (0-360), respectively. The recorded "S" parameter data is then processed using beam-forming algorithms namely delay and sum (DAS), improved delay and sum (IDAS), delay multiply and sum (DMAS) to form 2D images of the breast tumor and locate its position (using MATLAB R 2013a). The design and simulation of the entire set up that includes the C shaped UWB DRA & Bio media (breast phantom) is done using CST MWS V'17. The fabrication of the proposed DRA is carried out using wet etching and water jet cutting process. The physical model of the Bio media is prepared using gelatin (skin), petroleum-jelly (fat), and wheat-flour (tumor). The validation of antenna radiation parameters is done using a VNA (vector network analyzer) model no. E5063A and good agreement between the simulated and measured results is observed. The proposed C shaped DRA is used in a monostatic radar based configuration to collect "S" parameters and the data is processed in a GPU to reconstruct a 2D image of the scanned breast phantom area. The size and detected location of tumor using beam-forming is also close to the actual physical location of tumor with an error of 6.2% from the actual tumor location.

A study on MEMS vector hydrophone and its orientation algorithm

Purpose The problem of port and starboard ambiguity will exist when only utilize the vector or scalar parameters. Meanwhile, the amplitude-phase error between the vector and scalar can also cause this problem. In this paper, a compound MEMS vector hydrophone which contains cilia vector microstructure and piezoelectric ceramic tube has been presented to solve the problem. Compared with traditional MEMS vector hydrophone, the compound MEMS vector hydrophone can realize the measurement of sound pressure and vibration velocity simultaneously. Design/methodology/approach A compound MEMS vector hydrophone has been presented. The unipolar directivity of the combined signal which combine the acoustic pressure and vibration velocity is used to achieve the direction of arrival (DOA). This paper introduced the working principle and the target detection mechanism of the compound vector hydrophone. The amplitude and phase error are analyzed and corrected in the standing wave tube. After that, the authors use beam-forming algorithm to estimate the DOA. Findings The experimental results in the standing wave tube and the external field verified the vector hydrophone's directional accuracy up to 1 and 5 degrees, respectively. Practical implications - The research of compound vector hydrophone plays an important role in marine acoustic exploration and engineering applications. Originality/value This research provides a basis for MEMS hydrophone directivity theory. The compound vector hydrophone has been applied in the underwater location, with a huge market potential in underwater detection systems.

A low cost and efficient breast cancer detection method with a staircase shaped ultrawide band dielectric resonator antenna using monostatic radar based microwave imaging technique

In this article, a staircase-shaped ultra-wide band dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) has been used as a sensor for the detection of breast tumor by monostatic radar-based microwave imaging (MRMWI). The proposed DRA has fractional bandwidth (BW) 98.5% and a high peak gain 5.98 dB along with dual polarization behaviour from 5.12 to 8.2 GHz and 11.02-13.8 GHz. In the MRMWI setup, DRA is placed over the breast phantom at a distance of 7 mm and provides a safe exposure of radiation (<1.6 W/Kg). For simulation, it rotates around the phantom at a fixed interval in elevation (0-180 degrees) and azimuthal (0-360 degrees) planes. It works as a radiate and receives the reflected signals towards and from the scanned area simultaneously. To validate the results, fabricated DRA is connected to a vector network analyzer and rotates (as done for simulation) around the artificial breast phantom. That is a replica of the human breast made from gelatin+sugar, Vaseline and wheat flour+water equivalent to skin, fat and tumor respectively. Afterward S-11 responses are recorded in the presence and absence of tumor inside the phantom. A significant variation in recorded values leads to the detection of tumors that are processed further in beam-forming algorithms;delay and sum (DAS) and delay-multiply and sum (DMAS) to reform the 2-dimensional image of tumor in MATLAB.

An efficient wind measurement method with chaotic-sequence improved genetic-particle swarm optimization algorithm

Wind power is widely used in industry, meteorology, shipping and so on. Accurate measurement of wind parameters is the key to improve the efficiency of wind power application. But at present, wind parameters are largely measured by different devices based on time difference method, which is easily influnced by enviromental noise. beam-forming algorithm can improve the ability to resist environmental noise and the accuracy of hardware itself. Therefore, the beam-forming algorithm can be used to measure wind parameters in the high noise environment. However, the efficiency of the algorithm depends on how to search for spectral peak. In this paper, a three-dimensional wind measurement method with chaoticsequence improved genetic-particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the waveform searching efficiency of beamforming algorithm. It first searches for rough target wind parameters globally, and then searches for precise target wind parameters locally. Through simulation verification, the proposed algorithm can measure the wind parameters after 0.087s under the condition of system error of 50dB and environmental noise of 20dB, the accuracy of wind speed is 0.5%, the accuracy of wind direction is 1%, and the accuracy of pitch angle is 0.5%. Compared with the wind measurement by traversal method, the proposed algorithm can improve the wind measurement efficiency by about 20 times, and has similar or even better measurement results.. And by comparing with other algorithms, the advantages of this algorithm are verified.

In order to solve between the massive users interaction to cause the mobile communication quality to receive questions and so on influence, this paper follows close on the current communication the hot spot and the difficulty, through the introduction smart antenna's principle of work and the major function. It gives the smart antenna to be able to track technical characteristics auto-adapted and so on subscriber signal, discussed in emphatically the smart antenna beam forming algorithm, solved according to the algorithm has carried on questions differently and so on classification to the signal processing way. It has carried on the optimization to the algorithm. The optimized algorithm does not have any omission and so on three merits, has provided the solution for the front question.

Prof. Pedram Mousavi has been one of my closest and dearest friends and colleagues for more than 20 years. Extremely bright, highly innovative, very hardworking, a real problem solver, unbelievably positive, and above all a sincere and dependable friend. Mix all these with an amazing sense of humor, and then you have Pedram! In this talk I want to focus on Pedram's pioneering work on low-cost/complexity phased-array technologies and his significant contributions to commercial intelligent antenna technologies. Pedram's research work had substantial impact on the current extensive research programs on modular active phased-array system architecture at the University of Waterloo Centre for Intelligent Antenna and Radio Systems.
