Testing is an important yet often neglected skill in learning and teaching of computing science at the college level. Prior studies explored integrating test-driven development (TDD) into computer science courses with some degree of success, but also observed issues such as students' lack of appreciation, expressed frustration, and inconsistent adherence to TDD. TDD is a software development methodology that emphasizes writing low-level unit test cases prior to writing the corresponding portion of implementation. behavior-driven development (BDD) was proposed as an evolution of TDD to emphasize software behavior from users' perspective. BDD has been widely adopted in industry, and holds great potential in addressing the issues in using TDD to improve students' learning of testing. However, BDD was rarely explored in enhancing students' mastery of testing. Informed by the literature, this experience report explored the integration of BDD into a mobile development course. Students' performance, attitude and feedback on BDD was examined, and potential improvement on the integration of BDD was discussed. The results of this report sheds light on how to effectively integrate BDD into computer science courses.

behavior-driven development (BDD) improves the collaboration between developers and stakeholders following agile software development practices. Acceptance Test-driven development (ATDD) is an extension of BDD where requirements are accompanied by automated acceptance tests, translating functional acceptance criteria linked to requirements. While BDD and ATDD have been successfully applied in industry, few universities report on teaching BDD and ATDD principles as part of their curriculum. However, there is a need for education providers to teach industry-relevant practices so that junior developers' skills are better aligned to industry's expectations. Therefore, we report on how BDD and ATDD techniques have been taught in a two-semester software engineering project, including (i) the lack of observed evidence on the implications of applying BDD and ATDD on the functional suitability of software products, (ii) the lack of engagement with BDD and ATDD from students, and (ii) recommendations to educators to improve students' engagement with these practices.

Teaching modern software techniques is a challenging task as these practices tend to be collaborative and require a lot of preparation and environment setup. Among these techniques is behavior-driven development (BDD), a development method which proposes software to be develop focusing primarily on its expected behavior. In this context, this paper investigates the perception of active-learning experts regarding the potential benefits and challenges of teaching BDD in active learning environments to software engineering students. To achieve this goal, we have conducted an expert panel with 28 active-learning experts from four countries. Our preliminary results indicate that experts perceive both benefits, like improvement in specification, and challenges to embrace the BDD "culture" when teaching BDD to software engineering students. Based in these findings, we found indicatives that BDD should benefit software engineering students in active learning environments, however it may require more setup, teacher preparation and engagement during the learning process.

Agile approaches arose as a way of addressing some of the main challenges in software development, such as changing requirements, lack of understanding about the system scope, and out-of-sync between code, requirements, and documentation. Studies show that agile projects still suffer from lack of customer support, resulting in difficulties to represent customer needs on requested features. behavior-driven development (BDD) brings a structured way to represent user behaviors and to validate user stories by using an ubiquitous language, shared among everyone involved on the development of the software. The approach allows the creation of scenarios that can be used by the team to share information between different stakeholders, enabling all those players to successfully collaborate and coordinate their work. In this paper, we report on an empirical study conducted with 24 IT professionals with practical experience on BDD. Through this, we identify the perceived benefits and challenges of adopting BDD.

We combine behavior-driven development (BDD) and formal Model-Based Testing (MBT), to benefit from the smooth collaboration among stakeholders in BDD, and from automated testing with precise test cases in MBT. However, textual BDD scenarios written in natural language are not sufficient for formal MBT, as they might be ambiguous and lack the required information for testing. In this paper, we define a building block for the integration of BDD and MBT: an intermediate language, IBDD, to fill the gap between textual scenarios and formal models. Furthermore, we formally translate IBDD to BDD Transition Systems, which are formal models for BDD scenarios. Finally, we introduce three approaches for transforming BDDTSs into Symbolic Transition Systems, for which state-of-the-art MBT test generation algorithms are available.

Regression testing is an essential software maintenance activity before the release of a new version implementing a bug fix or a new feature. A regression test selection (RTS) technique chooses a subset of existing test cases to ensure that the system will not be adversely affected by the latest modifications. With the rise of DevOps, behavior-driven development (BDD) is growing in popularity as it is in close alignment with agile practices, for example, continuous integration. Hence, it is necessary to propose a novel and effective RTS technique for BDD specifically to accelerate the development process while ensuring software quality. Since most existing techniques for RTS are code-based and thus subject to some limitations, we present a requirement-based technique which uses the requirements in BDD to select test cases in both high-level (acceptance testing) and low-level (unit testing). Our technique firstly illustrates the new requirement with a scenario, and subsequently computes the semantic similarity of the new scenario and all existing scenarios with the vector space model. According to the results, the modification-traversing regression test cases can be selected in a semi-automated way. We also conduct an experimental study to evaluate our technique in terms of inclusiveness, precision, efficiency and generality. The study shows that our technique is applicable for BDD and effective in practice.

Agile software development deviates from the traditional and plan-based approaches to software engineering as its iterative cycles embrace changes in software requirements. Test-driven development (TDD) and behavior-driven development (BDD) are techniques that have been recently adopted by the software industry and have evolved from agile practices. These techniques aim at improving both the quality of the delivered software and the developers' productivity. They are several studies that have been conducted on TDD in both academic and industry settings with however only a few on BDD. While TDD and BDD have both become popular, many organizations and developers still do not understand the differences between these concepts or where they overlap. The aim of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of these two approaches in terms of external code quality, internal code quality and developers' productivity. To understand the weaknesses and strengths of each of these methods, a literature review was first performed. An experiment was then carried out in an industry setting to observe the effectiveness of TDD and BDD on a number of subjects. Our results showed that both techniques indeed increased the external quality of the delivered product. However, a decrease in productivity and internal quality were noted when BDD was used compared to TDD which might be due to the additional steps involved in BDD.

Cloud Computing and Mobile Cloud Computing are reshaping the way applications are being developed and deployed due to their unique needs such as massive scalability, guaranteed fault tolerance, near zero downtime, etc. and also daunting challenges such as security, reliability, continuous deployment and update capability. Microservices architecture, where application is composed of a set of independently deployable services, is increasingly becoming popular due to its capability to address most of these needs and challenges. In recent years, the behavior-driven development (BDD) has become one of the most popular agile software development processes, and frequently used in microservices development. The key to success of BDD is the executable acceptance tests that describe the expected behavior of a feature and its acceptance criteria in the form of scenarios using simple and business people readable syntax. The reusability, auditability, and maintainability become some of the major concerns when BDD test framework is applied for each microservice repository and no previous research addresses these concerns. In this paper, we present a reusable automated acceptance testing architecture to address all these concerns.

Initial observations of adopting behavior-driven development for an Internet of Things System in an agile process context is reported. Since an IoT system usually comprises multiple subsystems, the problem frames approach is adopted alongside to define the specifications that capture the overarching behaviors at the system level and constituent behaviors at the subsystem and component levels. development of specifications based on the two practices is illustrated with the development case of a Smart Cone system.

behavior-driven development (BDD) emphasizes collaboration and communication between developers, testers, and stakeholders. However, identifying the types of software projects and the characteristics in which BDD has been adopted could clarify the advantages and difficulties inherent in the process. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the state-of-the-art research in BDD, classify the benefits and challenges, and propose future directions for research. The review followed a well-known methodology in the software engineering field. The selected studies were analyzed based on research questions and key findings. The results evince that BDD has been used in large-scale software development, environments requiring natural language implementation, and projects with agile development teams. According to the reviewed studies, BDD benefits improving communication among stakeholders, better tracking of requirements, and the reuse of artifacts. On the other hand, relevant challenges in BDD include the cost and time required for implementation, the maintenance of BDD specifications, and the need for a common language among stakeholders. In addition, the analysis provides the best practices for adapting to BDD and improving its effectiveness, such as developing feature files, using language effectively, and using tools for BDD. Finally, BDD's limitations include the difficulty of writing effective scenarios, the need for a cultural transition in the development team, and the lack of standardization and guidelines for BDD implementation.
