belief propagation (BP) provides the basis for the design of 5G new radio low density parity check (5G-NR LDPC) codes, which in turn require a BP-based decoding algorithm. The min-sum algorithm (MSA), the simplification of sum-product algorithm (SPA), should hardly be regarded as a BP-based decoding algorithm because of its minimization. To remedy this, this paper adopts the multi-edge-type density evolution (MET-DE) as the main analysis tool, and introduces the concept of Kullback-Leibler divergence. Then the least Kullback-Leibler divergence criterion is proposed to identify the optimal normalization factors. Finally, Density-Evolution-aided Adaptive Normalization Min-Sum algorithm (DE-aided ANMSA) with edge classification is further proposed for the decoding implementation of 5G-NR LDPC codes. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed decoding algorithm can achieve excellent performance, while the greatest advantage is that its factors could be obtained more flexibly and accurately than traditional training methods. In addition, the optimal factors for base graph 2 in 5G-NR LDPC codes are provided as well.

Severe intersymbol interference (IS!) is one of the main obstacles for reliable signal reception in ATSC DTV systems. Decision feedback equalizers (DFEs) are commonly used to suppress the ISI. However, DFEs may suffer from error propagation due to incorrect symbol decisions from the symbol slicer. This phenomenon deteriorates the performance even more when the post-cursor ISI is strong. In order to reduce error propagation, we present a novel hybrid equalization scheme for ATSC channels. The proposed scheme consists of an adaptive decision feedback sparsening filter (DFSF), and an iterative maximum a posteriori (MAP) equalizer based on the belief propagation (BP) algorithm. In the first stage, instead of removing all the ISI from post cursors, the DFSF employs a modified feedback filter which leaves the strongest post-cursor ISI taps uncorrected. As a result, a long ISI channel is equalized to a sparse channel having only a small number of nonzero taps. In the second stage, a belief propagation algorithm is applied to mitigate the residual ISI. Since the channel is typically time-varying and suffers from Doppler fading, the DFSF is adapted using the least mean square (LMS) algorithm, such that the amplitude and the locations of the nonzero taps of the equalized sparse channel appear to be fixed. As such, the channel appears to be static during the second stage of equalization which consists of the BP detector. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the traditional DFE in symbol error rate, under both static channels and dynamic ATSC channels.

Based on Weighted Bit-Flipping decoding (WBF) algorithm, we present an efficient bit-deleting decoding algorithm. By deleting some code bits which are in a loop and related check bits, the decoder can converge quickly. Deleted bits are added when temporary convergence is achieved and final codes are found. Simulation results show that the bit-deleting decoding algorithm is only 0.4dB (BER) away from the performance of Sum Product algorithm (SPA) with only a modest increase in computational complexity compare to other WBF algorithm.

5G new radio low density parity check (5G-NR LDPC) codes specified by the 3rd generation partnership project. (3GPP), a representative class of multi-edge-type, quasi-cyclic and raptor-like LDPC codes with rate-compatible and length scalable capability, could meet with high-throughput demands. The corresponding decoding algorithm and implementation should support low complexity, high performance and scale invariance to channel variations and receiver imperfections. Flooding scheduling is usually used for the prevalent decoding algorithms and architecture of LDPC codes, but it is inefficient and inflexible compared with layered scheduling This paper proposes a new simplification method where the sub-groups with similar fitting functions of normalization factors are incorporated into the same type, and enhanced adaptive normalized min-sum algorithm (enhanced ANMSA) for layered scheduling is further proposed for the implementation of 5G-NR LDPC codes. Based on the new simplification method, the proposed algorithm defines three types of check nodes for base graph 2 (BC2) in 5G-NR LDPC codes, and then obtains three look-up tables for BG2 by training Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve excellent performance for 5G-NR LDPC codes of different rates and lengths over Binary-input AWGN channel and Rayleigh channel.

This paper proposes an algorithm for the decoding of low-density parity check (LDPC) codes, aiming to retrieve the performance degradation of conventional normalized min-sum algorithm, especially for irregular LDPC code. In our proposed algorithm, normalization factors are adjusted dynamically and adaptively during iterative decoding process according to look-up tables obtained by training and simulation in our proposal. The look-up tables construct the relationship between normalization factor a and the failed parity-check equation proportion p, which could be calculated in each decoding process. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve a performance closer to the sum-product algorithm and a coding gain of around 0.2dB compared to the conventional normalized min-sum algorithm for rate 2/3 irregular LDPC codes over the AWGN channel. Our proposal is independent from the channel characteristics and retains low complexity. The implementation facility and the excellent performance make the proposed algorithm expect a wide application.

This paper proposes a universal variable-length lossless compression algorithm based on fountain codes. The compressor concatenates the Burrows-Wheeler block sorting transform (BWT) with a fountain encoder, together with the closed-loop iterative doping algorithm. The decompressor uses a belief propagation algorithm in conjunction with the iterative doping algorithm and the inverse BWT. Linear-time compression/decompression complexity and competitive performance with respect to state-of-the-art compression algorithms are achieved.

Cooperative communication has attracted a lot of attention for its ability to exploit increased spatial diversity available at distributed antennas on other nodes in the system. For a cooperative system employing non-orthogonal amplify-and-forward half-duplex relays, the maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) is the optimal detector in intersymbol interference (ISI) channels. The implementation complexity of the optimal detector scales exponentially with the length of effective channel impulse response (CIR), however, which becomes very long and sparse as the relay period increases. In this paper, we focus on suboptimal detector design, complexity, and performance for cooperative relays in ISI channels. We first explore use of a decision feedback sequence estimator (DFSE). Next, to exploit the structured sparsity in the effective CIR, we consider an iterative belief propagation (BP) algorithm based detector. Using simulation results, we explore the tradeoff between complexity and performance.

The standard particle filter (PF) algorithm has the problem of particle diversity loss caused by particle impoverishment and resampling, which makes the particle sample unable to accurately represent the true distribution of the state probability density function. In this paper, a particle sampling method based on Sigma points and a method of classifying particles and recalculating weights based on weights are proposed. Based on the improvement of these two parts, an improved BP cooperative navigation algorithm is proposed. The simulation results show that the navigation error estimated by the improved BP algorithm proposed in this chapter is smaller than that of the traditional NBP algorithm, and the effectiveness of the improved algorithm is verified.

In this paper, an iterative soft-decision (SD) decoding algorithm for cyclic codes based on extended parity-check equations is developed. The algorithm does not necessarily utilize the algebraic properties of the code, but operates on transforming the systematic parity-check matrix using the soft reliability information matrix obtained from the received vector. Results show a significant performance gain when compared with the hard decision Berlekamp-Massey (B-M) and belief propagation (BP) algorithms, but present a similar bit error rate (BER) performance when compared to the adaptive belief propagation (ABP) algorithm. An important feature of the decoder is that it functions within a practical decoding time complexity, and can be generally implemented for the class of linear block codes.
