Texture Synthesis for Mobile Data Communications

This paper presents an approach to image coding that first paints a regularly arranged dotted pattern, using colors picked from a texture sample with features corresponding to the embedded data. It then camouflages the dotted pattern using the same texture sample while preserving quality comparable to that of existing synthesis techniques.

Recently, we designed and assembled protein nanobuilding blocks (PN-Blocks) from an intermolecularly folded dimeric de novo protein called WA20. Using this dimeric 4-helix bundle, we constructed a series of self-assembling supramolecular nanostructures including polyhedra and chain-type complexes. Here we describe the stabilization of WA20 by designing mutations that stabilize the helices and hydrophobic core. The redesigned proteins denature with substantially higher midpoints, with the most stable variant, called Super WA20 (SUWA), displaying an extremely high midpoint (T-m = 122 degrees C), much higher than the T-m of WA20 (75 degrees C). The crystal structure of SUWA reveals an intermolecularly folded dimer with bisecting U topology, similar to the parental WA20 structure, with two long alpha-helices of a protomer intertwined with the helices of another protomer. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the redesigned hydrophobic core in the center of SUWA significantly suppresses the deformation of helices observed in the same region of WA20, suggesting this is a critical factor stabilizing the SUWA structure. This hyperstable de novo protein is expected to be useful as nanoscale pillars of PN-Block components in new types of self-assembling nanoarchitectures.

Robustness of protein folding kinetics to surface hydrophobic substitutions

We use both combinatorial and site-directed mutagenesis to explore the consequences of surface hydrophobic substitutions for the folding of two small single domain proteins, the are SH3 domain, and the IgG binding domain of Peptostreptococcal protein L. We find that in almost every case, destabilizing surface hydrophobic substitutions have much larger effects on the rate of unfolding than on the rate of folding, suggesting that nonnative hydrophobic interactions do not significantly interfere with the rate of core assembly.

Local triangular patterns: novel handcrafted feature descriptors for facial expression recognition

Facial expressions are common across cultures and are used universally by humans to express their internal emotions, intentions and thoughts. The main task in facial expression recognition (FER) systems is to develop efficient feature descriptors that could effectively classify the facial expressions into various categories. In this work, towards extracting significant features, local triangular patterns (LTrP) named mini triangular pattern (mTP) and mega triangular pattern (MTP) have been proposed in order to minimise the feature vector length and to maximise the recognition accuracy. The proposed mTP method extracts two features in a 3 x 3 circular neighbourhood, whereas, MTP method extracts two features in a 5 x 5 circular neighbourhood. The proposed methods (mTP and MTP) are implemented on three benchmark FER datasets namely TFEID, MUG and KDEF. The experiments have been performed with respect to both six and seven expressions in person independent setup to simulate a real-world scenario. The experimental results demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed methods when compared to the standard existing methods.

Finger Vein Recognition Based on Personalized Weight Maps

Finger vein recognition is a promising biometric recognition technology, which verifies identities via the vein patterns in the fingers. binary pattern based methods were thoroughly studied in order to cope with the difficulties of extracting the blood vessel network. However, current binary pattern based finger vein matching methods treat every bit of feature codes derived from different image of various individuals as equally important and assign the same weight value to them. In this paper, we propose a finger vein recognition method based on personalized weight maps (PWMs). The different bits have different weight values according to their stabilities in a certain number of training samples from an individual. Firstly we present the concept of PWM, and then propose the finger vein recognition framework, which mainly consists of preprocessing, feature extraction, and matching. Finally, we design extensive experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposal. Experimental results show that PWM achieves not only better performance, but also high robustness and reliability. In addition, PWM can be used as a general framework for binary pattern based recognition.

Solution structure of switch arc, a mutant with 3₁₀ helices replacing a wild-type β-ribbon

Adjacent N11L and L12N mutations in the antiparallel beta-ribbon of Arc repressor result in dramatic changes in local structure in which each P-strand is replaced by a right-handed helix. The full solution structure of this "switch" Arc mutant shows that irregular 3,, helices compose the new secondary structure. This structural metamorphosis conserves the number of main-chain and side-chain to main-chain hydrogen bonds and the number of fully buried core residues. Apart from a slight widening of the interhelical angle between alpha-helices A and B and changes in sidechain conformation of a few core residues in Arc, no large-scale structural adjustments in the remainder of the protein are necessary to accommodate the ribbon-to-helix change. Nevertheless, some changes in hydrogen-exchange rates are observed, even in regions that have very similar structures in the two proteins. The surface of switch Arc is packed poorly compared to wild-type, leading to similar to 1000 Angstrom(2) of additional solvent-accessible surface area, and the N termini of the 3(10) helices make unfavorable head to-head electrostatic interactions. These structural features account for the positive m value and salt dependence of the ribbon-to-helix transition in Arc-N11L, a variant that can adopt either the mutant or wild-type structures. The tertiary fold is capped in different ways in switch and wildtype Arc, showing how stepwise evolutionary transformations can arise through small changes in amino acid sequence. M-Array pattern encoding is widely used in structured light for 3-D reconstruction due to its single-projection and single-imaging characteristics. The robustness of M-Array in 3-D reconstruction can be assessed by the accuracy of the global positioning of the code word and the density of the decodable feature points. This article proposes a pattern encoding method of robust M-Array based on texture constraints. M-Arrays are formed by matching and splicing candidate sub-windows, which are composed of symbols obtained from an M-Sequence one by one. To construct an M-Array with more texture information, both the number of edges and the maximum rectangular area within the sub-window are constrained. A novel three-level backtracking mechanism reduces the time complexity. Four indicators are introduced to evaluate the robustness of the M-Array and used to compare the proposed method with existing methods. The results show that the proposed method has low similarity between adjacent sub-windows and high uniformity of symbol distribution globally, indicating better accuracy of sub-window decoding. A 3-D reconstruction experiment in the actual scenes proves that the point cloud density and accuracy obtained by solving the M-Array pattern constructed by the method proposed are better.

A compact multi-pattern encoding descriptor for texture classification

binary pattern family is considered as a powerful tool for visual texture classification. Most popular methods improve the classification performance by multi-feature fusion. However, many sub-features are redundant and low-discriminative and the classification system has high computational complexity and unsatisfactory results. To handle above problems, this paper proposes a compact multi-pattern encoding descriptor for visual texture classification. First, we develop local extremum patterns and local center pattern to represent the neighborhood intensity changes. Then, we design a compact encoding scheme to encode local maximum, minimum and center patterns into a three-bit binary code, named MMC pattern. Finally, a compact multi-pattern encoding descriptor is proposed by combining the traditional local sign pattern and MMC pattern. Experimental results on five representative texture databases demonstrate that our method achieves the state-of-the-art texture classification performance. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. The real-time audience measurement system consists of five consecutive stages: face detection, face tracking, gender recognition, age classification and in-cloud data statistics analysis. The challenging part of such system is age estimation algorithm on the basis of machine learning methods. The face aging process is determined by different factors: genetic, lifestyle, expression and environment. That is why same age people can have quite different rates of facial aging. We propose a novel algorithm consisting of two stages: adaptive feature extraction based on local binary patterns and support vector machine classification. Experimental results on the FG-NET, MORPH and our own database are presented. Human perception ability in age estimation is studied using crowdsourcing which allows a comparison of the ability of machines and humans.
