Symbiotic relationships are one of several phenomena that can be observed in nature. These relationships consist of interactions between organisms and can lead to benefits or damages to those involved. In an optimization context, symbiotic relationships can be used to perform information exchange between populations of candidate solutions to a given problem. This paper presents an information exchange model inspired by symbiotic relationships and applies the model to unconstrained single-objective continuous optimization problems. The symbiotic relationships are modelled using the Pareto dominance criteria inside a computational ecosystem for optimization. The Artificial Bee Colony algorithm is used to compound the populations of the ecosystem. Four models of relationships are analyzed: slavery, competition, altruism and mutualism. Thirty unconstrained single-objective continuous benchmark functions with high number of dimensions (d = 200) are tested and obtained results compared. Results suggest that the proposed model for information exchange favors the balance between exploration and exploitation leading to better results.

This paper deals with the path planning problem of a robot in a maze based on a parallel chemotaxis bio-inspired model. The goal is the effective search of a route, which can connect the starting position of an autonomous robot with a final requested destination. To find this route the robot has to take under consideration its geometry, elements of its environment such as movements' restrictions by obstacles and other characteristics of the topology. Chemotaxis is a term found in biology and refers to the movement of an organism in response to a chemical stimulus. Among numerous examples of such biological form here we get inspiration by Physarum polycephalum, since this slime mold has shown the ability to find the shortest path in a maze between two spots, where chemicals exist, by following the gradient of the chemo-attractants. inspired by this behavior, chemotaxis will be used here to lead a robot to its desired destination inside a labyrinth. A device transmitting signals can be considered as an equivalent chemical source and the robot's receiver will follow the increased gradient of signal's amplitude. Moreover, an effective model, that has the ability to simulate such a problem reducing the calculations' complexity and in the same time mimicking the specific behavior, namely Cellular Automata ( CA) is coupled with chemotaxis. As a result, the design and implementation of a CA based bio-inspired algorithm is proposed and an E-Puck robot uses the exact algorithm to find the shortest path in different topologies as a proof of concept.

So far, most of the existing works on swarm systems are concerned with the collective motions. In this work, a somehow reverse problem is investigated, i.e., how an agent can interact with/control a swarm system. In particular, we consider the sheep herd transport problem: a herd of sheep is driven by a single sheepdog from the start place to the sheepfold. The rules governing the behaviors of the sheep are preset and known to the sheepdog, and the objective is to design the rule for the sheepdog to fulfil the transport task. inspired by the behaviors of true sheepdogs, we have developed a backward semi-circle reciprocation algorithm featuring dynamic turn-around point selection. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the proposed algorithm.

In recent years, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have gained significant attention for their role in forest fire detection, offering early detection and real-time monitoring capabilities. WSNs are tailored to continuously monitor environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, smoke, and gas concentrations, utilizing various sensors, communication modules, and a central monitoring system. However, their heterogeneous nature and unattended environments render WSNs vulnerable to diverse cyberthreats. Adversaries can exploit these vulnerabilities to manipulate smart devices remotely, posing serious risks to the integrity and resilience of forest ecosystems. Addressing these security concerns is crucial to ensuring uninterrupted monitoring of environmental parameters and effective forest fire detection. To mitigate these risks, we present a robust Intrusion Detection System (IDS) based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Genetic algorithm (GA), specifically designed to enhance the security of WSNs deployed for forest fire detection. Our proposed model involves hyperparameters optimization of the CNN model using GA. The experiments conducted on three public datasets, namely NSL-KDD, Edge-IoTset, and CICIoT-2023, demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology in enhancing security, achieving a high accuracy of 99.26% and a low FPR of 0.00735% using NSL-KDD while achieving 100% accuracy and zero FPR using the two new realistic datasets Edge-IIoTset and CICIoT-2023.

Adapting principles of developmental biology and agent-based modelling for automated urban residential layout design

The objective is to automate the design of residential layouts as an aid for planners dealing with complex situations. The algorithm COmputational Urban Layout Design, applied to sites with various shapes, is guided by the goal of many mutually accessible residences and can be set to generate orthogonal or irregular road layouts. Using biological principles of genomic equivalence, conditional differentiation and induction, it grows from an embryonic 'adaptive cell' into a plan. Cells are 'genetically identical' with full development potential and can simultaneously lay roads and residential lots, using the gene set to change cell expression and adapt to local contexts. Cells can be seen as self-propagating agents that sort out their dependencies through local interactions. When COmputational Urban Layout Design is set to grow a non-orthogonal layout, the plan has winding roads and irregular residential lots. Such a plan achieves the objective of relatively high residential density and accessibility, leading to walkable and coherent communities.

Medical sensor network consist of heterogeneous nodes, wireless, mobile and wired with varied functionality. The resources at each sensor require to be exploited minimally while sensitive information is sensed and communicated to its access points using secure data mules. In this paper, we analyze the flat architecture, where different functionality and priority information require varied resources forms a non-deterministic polynomial-time hard problem. Hence, a bio-inspired data mule that helps to obtain dynamic multi-objective solution with minimal resource and secure path is applied. The performance of the proposed approach is based on reduced latency, data delivery rate and resource cost.

This work, after a preliminary feasibility study using a Matlab environment simulation, defines the design and the real hardware testing of a new bio-inspired decision chain for UAV sense-and-avoid applications. Relying on a single and cheap visible camera sensor, computer vision, bio-inspired and automatic decision algorithms have been adopted and implemented on a specific ARM embedded platform through C++/OpenCV coding. A first data set processing, really captured on flight, has been presented.

Fifth-generation mobile and wireless communication systems are actively being studied as a next-generation mobile communication network. People and devices will connect to the Internet via wireless networks in future communication networks, but many challenges must be solved to realize 5G networks. For example, it is difficult to manage connected user devices using centralized control in the control plane. We previously proposed an architecture for autonomous and distributed mobility management and a biology-inspired mobility management scheme that adaptively selects the location of management entities. However, this scheme has some problems from a network-wide perspective, due to entities' autonomous decision-making. This paper introduces a control node for monitoring and managing the network to resolve the otherwise unsolvable problem of autonomous distributed control. We show that this control node can improve network stability without much loss of performance in the entire network.

this paper presents a methodology utilizing Coyote Optimization algorithm (COA) for Global Maximum Power Point Tracking (GMPPT) considering the impact of partial shading on a PV system. COA is utilized to clarify GMPP by comparing all the existing peaks on the PV curve. COA is also employed to control the boost converter. Different shading patterns are applied to a photovoltaic system. Simulations of this process are established utilizing MATLAB software. The suggested algorithm is compared with enhanced Grey Wolf Optimization (E-GWO), Dragonfly algorithm (DA), Ant Lion Optimization (ALO), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). According to the results, the suggested COA improves the tracking speed and accuracy of MPPT during partial shading conditions. Also, the suggested methodology is providing high efficiency for solar PV systems in any irradiation conditions.

In the past few decades, there is an increasing number of publications which show that solutions to complex mathematical problems can be found by applying unconventional computing methods. Among other examples, the plasmodium of Physarum Polycephalum has been intensively used for solving shortest path(s) problem, various graph problems, evaluation of transport networks, robotic control and many other engineering applications. In this paper we coupled the computing abilities of slime mould with one of the most powerful parallel computational models, namely Cellular Automata (CAs). CAs can capture the essential features of systems which global behavior emerges from the collective effect of simple components, which interact locally. Moreover, a Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) implementation will exploit the prominent feature of parallelism that CA structures inherently possess in contrast to the serial computers, thus accelerating the response of the proposed model. As a result, a slime mould CA based model in graphics processing unit (GPU) using CUDA programming model to describe and mimic the behavior of a plasmodium in a maze. In this way we are able to produce a virtual lab speeding up significantly the biological paradigm in GPU.
