Fast mesh compression is becoming a requisite in several applications such as medical imaging and video games. Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are recently becoming massively parallel devices for Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD) computing, addressing hence greater implementation challenges. Transformation and Quantization (TQ) is considered the second highest workload part of the wavelet-based mesh coding. Therefore, its acceleration will further improve the overall processing speed of the coding. In this paper, an OpenCL (Open Computing Language) acceleration of TQ is proposed. The Butterfly Wavelet Transform (BWT) based on the unlifted scheme is adopted in the transformation method while the embedded deadzone quantization is employed for the wavelet quantization. A chunk rearrangement process is applied for the computation of the neighborhood information needed for the Butterfly subdivision stencils. Accordingly, every chunk proceeds independently the prediction of the wavelet coefficients and their quantization. The key insights behind the proposed TQ method on GPU are a smart memory management and an efficient memory data mapping. Extensive experimental assessments demonstrate the effectiveness of our GPU implementation in terms of memory and runtime costs while preserving the rate distortion performance of the state-of-the-art bitplane coder.

Mutual information-based context template modeling for bitplane coding in remote sensing image compression

As remote sensing image applications are often characterized with limited bandwidth and high-quality demands, higher coding performance of remote sensing images are desirable. The embedded block coding with optimal truncation (EBCOT) is the fundamental part of JPEG2000 image compression standard. However, EBCOT only considers correlation within a sub-band and utilizes a context template of eight spatially neighboring coefficients in prediction. The existing optimization methods in literature using the current context template prove little performance improvements. To address this problem, this paper presents a new mutual information (MI)-based context template selection and modeling method. By further considering the correlation across the sub-bands, the potential prediction coefficients, including neighbors, far neighbors, parent and parent neighbors, are comprehensively examined and selected in such a manner that achieves a nice trade-off between the MI-based correlation criterion and the prediction complexity. Based on the selected context template, a high-order prediction model, which jointly considers the weight and the significance state of each coefficient, is proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm consistently outperforms the benchmark JPEG2000 standard and state-of-the-art algorithms in term of coding efficiency at a competitive computational cost, which makes it desirable in real-time compression applications, especially for remote sensing images. A method of lossless compression of high dynamic range (HDR) images encoded in LogLuv32 format is presented. Simple bitplane coding (SBC) is independently applied to the components of LogLuv data. A context model for coding a bit is created by a comparison of neighboring pixel values, and is fed to a range coder. As a result, the average bit rate of 9.8 bits/pixel was obtained in lossless compression of popular 34 LogLuv32 HDR images. That is, a set of those data shrinks to 31% of the uncompressed data size on average.

In a context marked by the proliferation of smartphones and multimedia applications, the processing and transmission of images have become a real problem. Image compression is the first approach to address this problem, it nevertheless suffers from its inability to adapt to the dynamics of limited environments, consisting mainly of mobile equipment and wireless networks. In this work, we propose a stochastic model to gradually estimate an image upon information on its pixels that are transmitted progressively. We consider this transmission as a dynamical process, where the sender pushes the data in decreasing significance order. Stationary Probability Model for bitplane Image coding Through Local Average of Wavelet Coefficients

This paper introduces a probability model for symbols emitted by bitplane image coding engines, which is conceived from a precise characterization of the signal produced by a wavelet transform. Main insights behind the proposed model are the estimation of the magnitude of wavelet coefficients as the arithmetic mean of its neighbors' magnitude (the so-called local average), and the assumption that emitted bits are under-complete representations of the underlying signal. The local average-based probability model is introduced in the framework of JPEG2000. While the resulting system is not JPEG2000 compatible, it preserves all features of the standard. Practical benefits of our model are enhanced coding efficiency, more opportunities for parallelism, and improved spatial scalability.

The motion-compensated embedded zero block coding (MC-EZBC) is a wavelet-based video coding scheme using motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) and spatial subband bitplane zero block coding (EZBC) to offer embedded scalable bitstream in terms of spatial resolution, frame rate, and SNR quality. However, the typical MC-EZBC bitstream structure makes it only suitable for storage video transmission. We propose an improved MC-EZBC bitstream structure for live video streaming, and design some simple and lightweight algorithms for MC- EZBC substream extraction in bitstream domain.

bitplane coding is a common strategy used in current image coding systems to perform lossy, or lossy-to-lossless, compression. There exist several studies and applications employing bitplane coding that require estimators to approximate the distortion produced when data are successively coded and transmitted. Such estimators usually assume that coefficients are uniformly distributed in the quantization interval. Even though this assumption simplifies estimation, it does not exactly correspond with the nature of the signal. This work introduces new estimators to approximate the distortion produced by the successive coding of transform coefficients in bitplane image coders, which have been determined through a precise approximation of the coefficients' distribution within the quantization intervals. Experimental results obtained in three applications suggest that the proposed estimators are able to approximate distortion with very high accuracy, providing a significant improvement over state-of-the-art results.

In this paper, we present an efficient hardware architecture of bitplane coding in VC-1. bitplane coding has demerit of implementation area because bitplane coding supports seven different decoding modes. Also. particular mode consumes many clock cycles. In order to reduce the area, we use suitable register banks that different modes share for decoding and use two SRAMs that are shared for different frames. Also, we designed MODE2 and DIFF modules with high-performance capability to account for the intensive processing that Differential-2 mode undergoes. The hardware implementation, based on 0.065-mu m standard cell library, consumes only 19.52K (excluding two 135 x 40 SRAMs) gates at a clock frequency of 133 MHz. Our architecture supports real-time bitplane coding for high-resolution (1280 x 720) video at 30 fps. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Ratio-modified block truncation coding algorithms for reduced bitrates

Block truncation coding (BTC) technique is a simple and fast image compression algorithm since complicated transforms are not used. The principle used in BTC algorithm is to use two-level quantiser that adapts to local properties of the image while preserving the first- or first- and second-order statistical moments. The parameters transmitter or stored in the BTC algorithm are statistical moments and bitplane yielding good quality images at a bitrate of 2 bits per pixel (bpp). In this paper, two algorithms for modified BTC (MBTC) are proposed for reducing the bitrate below 2 bpp. The principal used in the proposed algorithms is to use the ratio of moments which is a smaller value when compared to absolute moments. The ratio values are then entropy coded. The bitplane is also coded to remove the correlation among the bits. The proposed algorithms are compared with MBTC and the algorithms obtained by combining JPEG standard with MBTC in terms of bitrate, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and subjective quality. It is found that the reconstructed images obtained using the proposed algorithms yield better results.

In order to reduce area, we use register banks that different modes share for decoding and two SRAMs that are shared for different frames. Also, we carefully designed MODE2 and DIFF module for high performance, because Differential-2 mode was the worst case. The experimental result shows that under 0.065 mu m CMOS technology, the synthesized logic gate count is only 19.52K (not include two 135x40 SRAMs) when the maximum frequency is 133 MHz. Our architecture can easily support real-time processing of bitplane coding for 720p (1280x720) 30Hz video.
