Crossed-line segmentation for low-level vision

This work describes a new segmentation method for robotic soccer applications. The approach called crossed-line segmentation is based on the combination of region classification and a border detector which meet homogeneity criteria of medians. Experiments suggest that the method outperforms traditional procedure in terms of smoothing and segmentation accuracy. Furthermore, existing noise in the images is also observed to be reduced without missing the objects' borders.

In this topical review, we explain the recent achievement in the study of nonlinear interactions, putting an emphasis on the relevance to edge turbulence. First, we start from the survey of the essence in the nonlinear theory of drift wave -zonal flows systems, and visit the experimental observations of the nonlinear interactions of tokamak edge turbulence. Secondly, the universality of intermittent convective transport in the SOL of different magnetic devices are shown. Then, we discuss evolution of collisional drift wave instability in the linear plasma configuration, which is bounded by end plates having analogy to SOL plasmas. By introducing the Numerical Linear Device, the intermittent evolution of large-amplitude instabilities, generation mechanism of the poloidal flow and other nonlinear process are examined. Meso-scale structures, driven by curvature and gradB effects, like blobs and ELMs play a very important role in edge and SOL plasma transport in tokamaks. Here we discuss rather simple model describing the formation of blobs. The model is based on coupled drift-wave and ballooning effects. Both analytic and preliminary numerical results are reported. Sketch-based evaluation of image segmentation methods

A method for evaluating image segmentation methods is proposed in this paper. The method is based on a perception model where the drawing act is used to represent visual mental percepts. Each segmented image is represented by a minimal set of features and the segmentation method is tested against a set of sketches that represent a subset of the original image database, using the Mahalanobis distance function. The covariance matrix is set using a collection of sketches drawn by different users. The different drawings are demonstrated to be consistent across users. This evaluation method can be used to solve the problem of parameter selection in image segmentation, as well as to show the goodness or limitations of the different segmentation algorithms. Different well-known color segmentation algorithms are analyzed with the proposed method and the nature of each one is discussed. This evaluation method is also compared with heuristic functions that serve for the same purpose, showing the importance of using users' pictorial knowledge.

Low-dose, large-angled cone-beam helical CT data reconstruction using algebraic reconstruction techniques

We report on results on the use of two variants of the algebraic reconstruction techniques (ART) for reconstructing from helical cone-beam computerized tomography (CT) data: a standard one that considers a single ray in an iterative step and a block version which treats simultaneously several cone-beam projections when calculating an iterative step. Both algorithms were implemented using the modified Kaiser-Bessel window functions, also known as blobs, placed on the body-centered cubic (bcc) grid. The algorithms were used to reconstruct phantoms from data collected for the PI-geometry for four different maximum cone-beam angles (2.39, 7.13, 9.46 and 18.43 degrees). Both scattering and quantum noise (for three different noise levels) were introduced to create noisy projections that simulate low-dose examinations. The results presented here (for both noiseless and noisy data sets) point to the facts that, as opposed to a filtered back-projection algorithm, the quality of the reconstructions produced by the ART methods does not suffer from the increase in the cone-beam angle and it is more robust in the presence of noise. A modified technique for high-resolution staining of myelin

This report describes a new modification of the Gallyas method for staining myelin in fixed brain tissue and compares results of multiple myelin-visualizing techniques in normal common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), normal macaque monkey (Macaca mulatta), and a human with multiple sclerosis. The new modification involves immersion in 10% formal in following impregnation in ammoniacal silver nitrate, and the use of a low concentration of 4% paraformaldehyde in the developer. This improved technique is less sensitive to post-mortem tissue handling, temperature, and minor contaminants, allowing a more straightforward implementation in the laboratory setting. It permits simple user-controlled development of the reaction product to maximize contrast in the area of interest, resulting in high contrast staining not only of large axonal bundles, but also thin fascicles throughout tissue sections. Myelin staining in visual cortex of an Old World monkey and a New World monkey reveals similar patterns in the new myelin silver stain, the Gallyas stain, and myelin basic protein immunohistochemistry. The most heavily myelinated areas occupy the edges of blobs, but neither the most lightly stained nor the most darkly stained areas are always in our outside a blob. This indicates a more complex pattern between myelinated axons and blobs than previously suggested. While the new myelin silver stain, darkfield microscopy, the Luxol Fast Blue stain, the Gallyas stain, and myelin basic protein immunohistochemistry all permit visualization of myelin in the CNS, each technique has its own merits and pitfalls;careful evaluation of individual study requirements would best determine which methods are the most useful. We have investigated a relation between the edge magnetic structure of the Large Helical Device (LHD) and the fluctuation properties of the ion saturation currents I-sat measured by a Langmuir probe array (16 channels) embedded in an outboard divertor plate. The edge magnetic structure is calculated by KMAG and Watanabe codes. The fluctuation properties are analyzed based on the probability distribution function (p.d.f.) and complex Morlet wavelet decomposition. Large positive skewness was obtained from I-sat measured at a low field side of a divertor leg and negative skewness was observed at striking point of the divertor leg, where the connection length of magnetic line of force is long. The fluctuation characteristics has very weak dependence of plasma density and its gradient. Waiting time statistics was analyzed to indicate that the waiting time statistics is not a Poisson process and there is no clear signature of SOC paradigm. (c) 2006 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Rebuilding three-dimensional objects represented by a set of points is a classical problem in computer graphics. Multiple applications like medical imaging or industrial techniques require finding shape from scattered data. Therefore, the reconstruction of a set of points that represents a shape has been widely studied, depending on data source and reconstruction's objectives. This purpose of this paper is to provide an automatic reconstruction from an unorganized cloud describing an-unknown shape in order to provide a solution that will allow to compute the object's volume and to deform it with constant volume. The main idea in this paper consists in filling the object's interior with an equipotential surface resulting of the fusion of potential field primitives also called metaballs or blobs. Nevertheless, contrary to most of usual rebuilding methods based on implicit primitives blending, we do not compute any medial axis to set the primary objects. Indeed, a fast voxelization is used to find a summary contour from the discrete shape and to determine interior areas. Then, the positioning of implicit primitives rely on a multilayer system. Finally, a controlled fusion of the isosurfaces guarantees the lack of any holes and a respectful contour of the original object, such that we obtain a complete shape filling.
