A novel sensor was previously developed for detecting rock boundaries behind uncut coal for controlling the horizon of the cutting head in long-wall mining environments. This boundary detection method is based on extracting the thickness of the uncut layer from the complex reflection coefficient of a narrow band antenna that is mounted directly on the rotating cutting drum. The main practical challenges of this detection method lie in the ability to (1) mitigate the much stronger reflection from the air-mine interface and (2) obtain the in situ dielectric constant and conductivity of the cut material in active mining environments. This paper presents a novel in situ calibration method and real-time uncut thickness estimation procedure which could be practically implemented into normal long-wall mining operations, and thus allowing real-time monitoring of distance to rock boundaries behind the uncut seam. This paper will also discuss the uncertainty of the resultant estimated thickness in relation to the variation of cutting drum positions, dielectric constant, and air gap.

This paper tackles the problem of boundary detection by proposing a simple, distributed and connectivity-based algorithm. Our algorithm examines the 2-hop iso-contour of each node, and outperforms existing algorithms examining iso-contours. Specifically, the proposed algorithm makes a rough decision on a suspected boundary node by examining its 2-hop iso-contour, and then refines the decision based on a heuristic operation, which significantly reduces the size of the suspected boundary node set. More importantly, boundary cycles corresponding to inner and outer boundaries are identified and provide valuable knowledge to various applications. A thorough evaluation shows that our algorithm is applicable to dense as well as sparse WSNs.

We present an online boundary classification error detection algorithm to improve accuracy of the original distributed boundary detection algorithm for networked multi-robot systems. It is a fully decentralized method based on the geometric approach allowing to suppress boundary errors without recursive process and global synchronization. The accuracy of the ration of correctly identified robots over the total number of robots reaches 100%. We have demonstrated the effectiveness of this boundary detection algorithm in both simulation and real-world environment.

Radar HRRP Open Set Target Recognition Based on Closed Classification boundary

Radar automatic target recognition based on high-resolution range profile (HRRP) has become a research hotspot in recent years. The current works mainly focus on closed set recognition, where all the test samples are assigned to the training classes. However, radar may capture many unknown targets in practical applications, and most current methods are incapable of identifying the unknown targets as the 'unknown'. Therefore, open set recognition is proposed to solve this kind of recognition task. This paper analyzes the basic classification principle of both recognitions and makes sure that determining the closed classification boundary is the key to addressing open set recognition. To achieve this goal, this paper proposes a novel boundary detection algorithm based on the distribution balance property of k-nearest neighbor objects, which can be used to realize the identification of the known and unknown targets simultaneously by detecting the boundary of the known classes. Finally, extensive experiments based on measured HRRP data have demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is indeed helpful to greatly improve the open set performance by determining the closed classification boundary of the known classes.

Combined with the theories of intermolecular multiple-quantum coherences (iMQCs) and distant dipolar field (DDF) effect, edge detection effect due to chemical shift variation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was simulated and discussed deeply using an efficient numerical algorithm based on the nonlinear Bloch equations. Simulation results show that, different from the conventional MRI signal, chemical shift in iMQC MRI can provide new imaging information, an edge detection method to search regions containing spins with chemical shift offset. The edge detection method can present plentiful information about various kinds of edges of object regions.

Edge detection is an important image processing technique used in face recognition. In this paper we propose an edge detection algorithm suitable for extracting edge maps from facial images under noisy conditions. We employ several improvised techniques like composite gradient variation measures, weighted wide convolution kernels and dual maxima detection. This helps in removing spurious edge points along stronger edges, extracting fine edge lines along facial boundaries and curvatures and suppressing noise. This is demonstrated by extracting edges from facial images degraded by Gaussian, speckle and salt and pepper noise. For performance measurement and evaluation Pratt's Figure of Merit and Signal to Noise statistics is used.

We propose two methods for detecting transparent text in images and recovering the background behind the text. Although text detection in natural scenes is an active research area, most current methods are focused on non-transparent text. To detect transparent text, we developed an adaptive edge detection method for edge-based text detection that can accurately detect text even under low contrast, which is common among transparent text images and a method for recovering the original background content behind the detected transparent text. Experiments using real images show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Edge detection is a crucial and basic tool in image segmentation. The key of edge detection in gray image is to detect more edge details, reduce the noise impact to the largest degree, and threshold the edge image automatically. According to this, a novel edge detection method based on mathematic morphology and iterative thresholding is proposed in this paper. A modified morphological transform through regrouping the priorities of several morphological transforms based on contour structuring elements is realized first, and then an edge detector is defined by using the multi-scale operation of the modified morphological transform to detect the gray-scale edge map. Finally, a new iterative thresholding algorithm is applied to obtain the binary edge image. Comparative study with other morphological methods reveals its Superiority over de-noising capacity, edge details protection and un-sensitivity to the shape of the structuring elements.

The problem of edge detection in noisy images is addressed in this paper. It is shown that the performance of an existing edge detection method, known as the stochastic gradient operator, can be significantly improved by incorporating three new features: (i) a robust technique for estimating the noise variance and autocorrelation function of the signal, (ii) a block-by-block adaptation of the gradient mask, and (iii) calculation of a threshold based on Rayleigh distribution. The performance of the proposed technique is compared with that of some existing ones.

Image processing and computer vision applications are used intensively in several domains in particular multimedia and medicine. The main challenge in developing such applications is how to guarantee both high accuracy and low execution time. Accordingly, we observe two research directions: the first focuses on improving the algorithms and the second focuses on designing fast hardware platforms. In this paper, we propose an efficient parallel implementation of an accurate extended Canny edge detection algorithm suitable for medical applications on embedded many-core platform. The proposed implementation is running at a frame rate of 10 frames/s for image size of 512x512 with high accurate and smooth line edges.
