Preparation of carbon microstructures by thermal treatment of thermosetting/thermoplastic polymers and their application in water purification

In this Letter, a facile route to fabricate carbon materials with controllable microstructures by thermal treatment of thermosetting/thermoplastic polymers is presented. Porous carbon was prepared by carbonisation of polystyrene-poly(furfuryl alcohol) (PS-PFA) composites with PS spheres as hard template. The carbon spheres with diameter similar to 2-3 mu m were obtained through thermal pyrolysis of thermosetting PFA spheres, which were synthesised by polymerisation of furfuryl alcohol under sonication without surfactant. More importantly, the obtained carbon microstructures can be used as adsorbents for water purification, as illustrated by adsorption of methylene blue from contaminated water. The results show that the adsorption performance can be controlled by varying the microstructures of carbon based on thermal treatment of thermosetting/thermoplastic polymers. This Letter not only deepens the understanding of carbon microstructures derived from thermosetting/thermoplastic polymers, but also supplies novel adsorbents for water purification.

Annealing conditions with Mg vapor-pressure control and hydrogen storage characteristic of La₄MgNi₁₉ hydrogen storage alloy

In La-Mg-Ni system hydrogen storage alloys, which have been attracting attention as a promising negative electrode material for Ni-MH secondary batteries, there are many phases with a variously layered stacking structure. When subjected to annealing at high temperature, the composition of these alloys becomes inhomogeneous due to the volatilization of Mg. It is therefore difficult to prepare a single phase by the normal annealing procedure. We carried out high-temperature annealing processing in which we controlled the Mg vapor pressure of La4MgNi19 alloy using a temperature-gradient furnace. By controlling the Mg vapor pressure under the sealing atmosphere, we successfully obtained homogeneous La4MgNi19. We prepared a P-Mg=T diagram of the phases formed for La4MgNi19 composition, and found the optimum annealing conditions for the La4MgNi19 phase. The optimum annealing conditions obtained were between T= 1123 K, P-Mg = 0.4 kPa and T= 1223 K, P-Mg = 2 kPa. However, we found the coexistence of 3R-type and 2H-type structures, which are polytypes of La4MgNi19. The lattice constants of the 3R type were a = 0.5031 nm, c= 4.826 run, and those of the 2H type were a = 0.5032 rim, c= 3.216 nm. The hydrogen storage characteristics of the annealed alloy were obtained by measuring the PcT curves at 333 K. The PcT curves showed an almost flat plateau, P-H2 = 0.1 MPa, H/M= 1.1, 1.5 mass% H-2, and good cycle characteristics. It was confirmed that the dehydrogenated alloy retained the same structure but an expansion of I to 2% was observed in the c-axis.

Design of a ternary static memory cell using carbon nanotube-based transistors

In this Letter, the authors investigate the use of carbon nanotube-based field effect transistors (cNTFET) for the design of a ternary static random access memory (SRAM). The authors consider two designs - one using 8 transistors and the other using 14 transistors. Using circuit simulation models for cNTFETs, the authors show that both designs produce a functional ternary SRAM cell. The authors also measure the delay and power of the read-and-write operation of the ternary SRAM created using both models and show that the delays are comparable.

Starting from a [(c-MeO<^>N<^>c)Aucl] complex as precursor, a direct substitution by c,H-activation from sp-, sp(2)- or sp(3)-c,H-bonds under basic conditions in a planetary ball mill was achieved. Because of the extraordinary photophysical properties of the target compounds, this protocol provides an easy access to a highly valued complex class. In contrast to existing protocols, no pre-functionalization of the starting materials is necessary and the use of expensive transition metal catalysts can be avoided, which makes this application appealing also for industrial purposes. In addition the methodology was not restricted to pincer complexes, which was demonstrated by the substitution of chelate type [(tpy)Aucl2] complexes.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: curcuma latifolia Roscoe, a plant in the curcuma genus, has been used as a food additive and folk medicine in Thailand to treat pelvic pain and improve premenstrual syndrome. Although it has been used for centuries, no scientific studies have proved its potential effects on inflammatory pain and central nervous system (cNS) safety profiles. Aim of the study: This study aimed to evaluate the potential effects of the ethanolic extract of c. latifolia rhizome on inflammatory pain in mice, together with its cNS safety profiles. Materials and methods: First, network pharmacology was employed to identify the role of bioactive constituents in c. latifolia on inflammatory pain. In addition, in vitro pharmacology was also evaluated to confirm the antiinflammatory activity of c. latifolia extract at cellular levels in activated macrophages and microglia. Furthermore, the efficacy of the plant extract in attenuating formalin-induced pain-like behaviors in mice was evaluated. Mice were orally administered the extract (125, 250, 500 mg/kg) followed by the measurement of formalininduced pain-like behaviors. The LABORAS automated behavioral analysis and rotarod test were used to assess potential cNS side effects of c. latifolia extract (500 mg/kg) in mice. Results: The results demonstrated that major bioactive constituents present in c. latifolia have the ability to regulate multiple targets, biological processes and pathways associated with inflammatory pain as assessed by network pharmacology. c. latifolia modulated peripheral and central immune cells via reducing proinflammatory mediators (NO, TNF-& alpha;, and IL-6). c. latifolia extract improved formalin-induced pain-like behaviors in a dose dependent manner during phase II of the formalin test. The efficacy of the plant extract at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg was comparable to that of the positive control (indomethacin 10 mg/kg). Histamine H-1 receptors on peripheral human mononuclear cells were characterized by radioligand binding of the H-1 receptor antagonist [3H]pyrilamine to lymphocyte-rich preparations. Simultaneous computerized analyses of 16 separate equilibrium-binding assays indicated the presence of 2 distinct classes of binding sites with dissociation constants (Kds) of 4 .+-. 1 nM and 55 .+-. 9 .mu.M and binding capacities of 21 .+-. 7 fmol and 117 .+-. 15 pmol/million cells, respectively. competition binding curves for displacement of [3H]pyrilamine binding by histamine receptor agonists and antagonists also indicated the presence of multiple binding sites for the H-1 receptor. Further, the Ec50 values determined for histamine receptor agonists and antagonists were entirely consistent with the expected rank order of potency for interactions with H-1 receptors. Thus, human mononuclear cells have a large number of H-1 receptors that exhibit 2 distinct binding sites, and the Kds for these sites are within the range of histamine concentrations achieved either in physiologic states or after mast cell (or basophil) degranulation.

Background Apixaban and rivaroxaban are two direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOAcs) recommended for thromboprophylaxis in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy in an ambulatory setting. 1. cytosolic superoxide dismutase was purified to homogeneity from caenorhabditis elegans tissue. The active enzyme had a specific activity of 2660 U/mg protein, a molecular mass of 37.5-40 kDa, and appeared to be composed of 2 subunits of approximately 17 kDa. A subunit molecular mass of 16 kDa was determined for protein unfolded in the absence of reducing agents, suggesting the presence of an intramolecular disulfide bond. 2. The enzyme preparation contained a number of charge isoforms having pI values of 9.0, 8.1 (major fraction), 6.9, and 5.2 (minor fractions). These charge isoforms were also present in freshly made homogenates. 3. No alteration of the electrophoretic pattern was observed in cytosolic extracts from the mutant strain TJ412 which has a 100% longer life expectancy and which overproduces cytosolic superoxide dismutase.

A major difference between porcine and bovine pancreatic phospholipase A2 (PA2) is the relatively low affinity of the bovine enzyme for lipid-water interfaces. We have investigated the binding of porcine, bovine, and equine PA2 to n-hexadecylphosphocholine (c16-Pc) micelles using optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy. The zero field splittings (ZFS) of the single Trp-3 residue undergo significant changes upon binding of PA2 to c16-Pc micelles. ZFS titrations of PA2 vs c16-Pc indicate that porcine and equine enzymes have similar binding affinity and stoichiometry, while bovine PA2 binds much more weakly to the lipid-water interfaces. This may be attributed to the differences in the amino acid composition and the conformation of the binding sites for lipid-water interfaces of these enzymes.
