During the past year, the family of cadherin cell-adhesion molecules has increased in number and diversity. Recent studies have also emphasized how cadherin activity can be regulated by the dynamic association with intracellular components, the catenins, and with extracellular molecules that are linked to different cell-signaling pathways. Finally, the initial steps have been taken towards identifying the function of cadherins in vivo, including their potential roles in early embryonic development.

Fabrication of arrays of carbon micro- and nanostructures via electrochemical etching

New methods to pattern and etch a variety of materials are proving to be extremely important owing to the broad impact of microfabrication technology on chemistry and biology. A method, for etching graphitic carbon materials that opens pathways for the creation of arrays of carbon structures, has been developed. The method involves standard photolithographic pattern transfers to a thin carbon film and anodisation of the exposed carbon substrate in basic electrolytes. Structures of various shapes can be fabricated that range in size from tens of microns to submicrons. Arrays of these structures can be fabricated over areas encompassing hundreds of microns with low failure rates. The shape, size and distance between array objects are easily controlled by the fabrication procedure. Scanning electron microscopy is used to visualise the various structures fabricated. The authors show that this technology is useful for the fabrication of microelectrode arrays.

Endohedral functionalisation of multi-wall carbon nanotubes by acidic cesium salt of Preyssler in nanosize

Nanoparticles of acidic cesium salt of Preyssler by a one-step solid-state reaction at room temperature, were synthesised and characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, titration, inductively coupled plasma and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. These uniform nanoparticles showed an average size of 2-10 nm. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWcNTs) were synthesised by the catalytic chemical vapour deposition method and used as nanostructured porous supports for the immobilisation of the nanoparticles of the acidic cesium salt of Preyssler. The TEM image showed a bamboo-like structure with inner and outer diameters of about 20 and 35 nm, respectively. The modification of the MWcNTs by the synthesised nanoparticles was successfully achieved via the impregnation method. The infrared analysis showed that the basic structure of Preyssler is preserved and left intact. The TEM images also showed an endohedral functionalisation of the MWcNTs.

Fabrication of carbons dendritic hierarchical structure via easy copper substrate-induced solvothermal process at low temperature

Three-dimensional hierarchical dendritic carbon structures with high densities of secondary carbon nanosheets have been fabricated using a solvothermal growth via reacting metal Na with tetrachloromethane in 200 degrees c on cu ribbon. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images of the as-prepared sample shows that 3D hierarchical dendritic carbon structures are composed of carbon nanosheets with the thickness of about 20 nm. The powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra reveal the low graphitisation degree of the as-prepared sample. A possible formation mechanism has been proposed.

Fabrication of polyvinyl alcohol/multi-walled carbon nanotubes composite electrospun nanofibres and their application as microwave absorbing material

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWcNTs) composite nanofibres with various MWcNT contents (up to 10 wt%) were fabricated by electrospinning process and their microwave absorption properties were evaluated by a vector network analyser in the frequency range of 8-12 GHz (X-band) at room temperature. Scanning electron microscopy analysis of the nanofibre samples revealed that the deformation of the nanofibres increases with increasing MWcNT concentration. Very smooth surfaces of the composite electrospun nanofibres even for nanofibres with concentration of 10 wt% MWcNT have been successfully prepared because of the high stability dispersion of MWcNTs. It was observed that the absorption microwave properties improved by increasing the loading levels of MWcNTs. Finally, the PVA/SDS/MWcNT composite nanofibres sample with 10 wt% content of MWcNT has shown a reflection loss of 15 dB at a frequency of 8 GHz.

Root litter quality drives the dynamic of native mineral-associated organic carbon in a temperate agricultural soil

Background and aimsUnderstanding the fate and residence time of organic matter added to soils, and its effect on native soil organic carbon (SOc) mineralisation is key for developing efficient SOc sequestration strategies. Here, the effect of litter quality, particularly the carbon-to-nitrogen (c:N) ratio, on the dynamics of particulate (POc) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOc) were *** a two-year incubation experiment, root litter samples of the c4-grass Miscanthus with four different c:N ratios ranging from 50 to 124 were added to a loamy agricultural topsoil. In an additional treatment, ammonium nitrate was added to the c:N 124 litter to match the c:N 50 litter input ratio. Soils were size-fractionated after 6, 12 and 24 months and & delta;c-13 was measured to determine the proportion of new and native POc and MAOc. Litter quality was further assessed by mid-infrared spectroscopy and compound peak *** quality strongly affected SOc dynamics, with total SOc losses of 42.5 & PLUSMN;3.0% in the c:N 50 treatment and 48.9 & PLUSMN;3.0% in the c:N 124 treatment after 24 months. Largest treatment effects occurred in mineralisation of native MAOc, which was strongly primed by litter addition. The N amendment in the c:N 124 treatment did not alleviate this potential N mining *** quality plays a major role in overall SOc dynamics, and priming for N mining from the MAOc pool could be a dominant mechanism. However, adding N did not compensate for poor litter quality, highlighting the role of litter quality beyond stoichiometric imbalances.

REPRESSION OF GLYOXYSOMAL ENZYME-AcTIVITIES IN ANISE (PIMPINELLA-ANISUM L) SUSPENSION-cULTURES

Anise suspension culture cells produce glyoxysomes when the source of c is removed from the incubation medium or replaced by 20 mmol/l acetate. After re-addition of sucrose the activities of the key enzymes for the glyoxylate cylce, isocitrate lyase (IcL) and malate synthase (MS), are gradually lost from both the cells and the glyoxysomal fraction. About 75% of the IcL activity disappears within 6-8 h after transfer. The enzyme activity is completely lacking after 48 h when the glyoxysomal fraction still shows about 50% of the initial MS activity. But 72 h after transfer the latter has also vanished. Both catalase (cAT) activity and the buoyant density of the microbodies are only slightly changed by the restoration of the sucrose repression. Such treatment of the cultures may induce the selective inactivation or degradation of glyoxylate cycle enzymes without massive degradation of the bearing organelles.

Piceatannol extends the lifespan of caenorhabditis elegans via DAF-16

Piceatannol is a natural stilbene with many beneficial effects, such as antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antiatherogenic activities;however, its role on aging is not known. In this study, we used caenorhabditis elegans as an animal model to study the effect of piceatannol on its lifespan and investigated the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that 50 and 100 mu M piceatannol significantly extended the lifespan of c. elegans without altering the growth rate, worm size and progeny production. Piceatannol delayed the age-related decline of pumping rate and locomotive activity, and protected the worms from heat and oxidative stress. This study further indicated that lifespan extension and enhanced stress resistance induced by piceatannol requires DAF-16. Since DAF-16 is conserved from nematodes to mammals, our study may have important implications in utilizing piceatannol to promote healthy aging and combat age-related disease in humans.
