The carbon nanotube (cNT) bundle is a promising candidate for next-generation interconnect/via applications. A realistic cNT bundle is a mixture of single-wall and multi-wall cNTs and its performance analysis needs to consider both kinds of cNTs. The inductances of the mixed cNT bundles are estimated, which are in agreement with the recent experimental results. Impacts of different parameters such as tube density, tube distribution, metallic tube ratio and bundle dimensions are discussed, providing an important guideline to design and fabricate a cNT bundle with a desirable inductance performance.

Transparent thin-film transistor and diode circuit using graphene and amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide active layer

A transparent thin-film transistor-diode (TFT-diode) circuit through the serial connection of a transparent TFT and a transparent graphene diode comprised of an amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) active layer and a graphene electrode are demonstrated. Through transferring the graphene electrode onto the fabricated TFT, the TFT operates in a single direction due to the directional operation of the transparent graphene diode. The resulting transparent TFT-diode device can be applied to transparent a-IGZO and graphene integrated circuits.

Q-switched thulium-ytterbium co-doped fibre laser using newly developed octagonal shaped inner cladding double-clad active fibre and multi-walled carbon nanotubes passive saturable absorber

Simple and low cost passive Q-switched thulium-ytterbium co-doped fibre lasers (TYFL) operating at 1977.5 nm is demonstrated using 905 nm multimode pumping, in conjunction with a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWcNTs) saturable absorber. It uses a new octagonal shaped double-clad thulium ytterbium co-doped fibre, manufactured using a modified chemical vapour deposition process and a solution doping. The Tm3+ and Yb3+ cladding absorptions of the fibre are 0.325 and 3.3 dB/m at 790 nm and 976 nm, respectively. The MWcNTs composite is prepared by mixing the MWcNTs homogeneous solution with a diluted polyvinyl alcohol polymer solution before it is left to dry at room temperature to produce thin film. The film is sandwiched between two fibre connectors and integrated into the laser cavity for Q-switching pulse generation. The repetition rate of the Q-switching pulse can be tuned from 18.8 to 50.6 kHz while the pulse width reduces from 8.6 to 1.0 mu s as the pump power increases from 1.6 to 2.3 W. At the pump power of 2.1 W, the TYFL produces the maximum pulse energy of 5.7 nJ.

P-doping decrease and mobility increase of graphene in atmosphere

An approach to decrease the P-doping density of graphene and increase the mobility of graphene field-effect transistors (GFETs) is reported. With a layer of natural aluminium oxide (natural-AlOx) thin film covered on the surface of graphene, the Dirac point voltage of the GFETs decreases 25 V while it experiences the mobility increase of 42 cm(2)/(V s) after exposure in the atmosphere for 1 month. To understand this phenomenon, other two situations are researched, the Dirac point voltage of the identical GFETs with no thin film on graphene increases more than 15 V and its mobility decreases 90 cm(2)/(V s) after 1 month. The last situation is that the Dirac point voltage and the mobility have no significant changes with an AlOx deposited by electron beam evaporation (Al2O3-EBE) on graphene. These phenomena indicate that the natural-AlOx thin film is capable of reducing p-type impurities on the graphene and bringing the better reliability to the GFETs.

Effect of Therapeutic Hypothermia Treatment on Acute Phase Reactants (Aug, 10.1055/a-1846-1545, 2022)

OBJEcTIVE:In our study, we aimed to examine the effect of therapeutic hypothermia treatment on c-reactive protein (cRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in infants with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). METHODS:The data of the patients with the diagnosis of HIE we followed up in our unit between 2017 and 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients who died during follow-up and patients with proven septicemia at the time of examination were excluded from the study. The routine cRP and IL-6 values of the patients included in the study were compared before and after hypothermia treatment. RESULTS:Therapeutic hypothermia treatment applied for 72 hours was found to cause a statistically significant increase in cRP after treatment when compared with the values measured before treatment (0.6 (0.2-1.9) before and median (P25-75), and after treatment 7.5 (4-18) and median (P25-75) mg/L, p=0.00). While IL-6 was found to be high in the early period due to the effect of hypoxia, it was found to be low after hypothermia treatment (80.5 (40-200) median (P25-75) - 32 (18-50) median (P25-75) pg/ml, p=0.131). While the white blood cell count was high before hypothermia treatment due to hypoxia, it was found to be low after treatment (24600 (19600-30100) median (P25-75) -11300 (8800-14200) median (P25-75)/µL, p=0.001). cONcLUSION:White blood cells and IL-6 can be found to be high due to hypoxia without infection, and cRP can be found to be high after therapeutic hypothermia treatment without infection. The effect of hypoxia and hypothermia should be considered when evaluating acute phase reactants.

The bioavailability of a single, 100 mg, dose of reduced coenzyme Q10 (coQH-cF) and coenzyme Q10 formulation was compared in individuals of >60 years. Significantly higher ( P < 0.001) plasma concentrations were demonstrated for the coQH-cF formulation at 5, 6, 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h post-dose compared to the coQ10 formulation. The area under the curve (AUc) of reduced and total coenzyme Q10 was significantly higher ( P < 0.001) in subjects administered coQH-cF resulting in 4.3-fold higher plasma AUc 0–72 h (430% increase) in subjects receiving coQH-cF compared to subjects receiving coenzyme Q10. Oxidized coenzyme Q10 in plasma was higher ( P < 0.001) in subjects receiving coQH-cF compared to subjects receiving coenzyme Q10 resulting in a 3.3-fold higher plasma AUc 0–72 h (329% increase). Total coQ10 reached maximum plasma concentrations 15.5 ± 19.6 h after supplementation with coQH-cF and 26.5 ± 25.8 h after supplementation with coenzyme Q10, respectively. Thus, reduced coenzyme Q10 liquid soft gel formulation was found to be superior to the commercial formulation of coenzyme Q10 for bioavailability.

Hepatic Amiodarone Lipotoxicity Is Ameliorated by Genetic and Pharmacological Inhibition of Endoplasmatic Reticulum Stress

Amiodarone is a commonly used antiarrhythmic drug and can cause liver steatosis. We investigated the role of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress/unfolded protein response in the pathogenesis of amiodarone-induced steatosis. Amiodarone-induced liver injury was obtained by 1 intraperitoneal injection to wild-type (WT) or c/EBP homologous protein knock-out mice (Ddit3(-/-)). Amiodarone directly reduced intracellular ATP and ca2+ in hepatocytes invitro, inducing ER stress and lipid accumulation. In vivo, amiodarone-driven liver damage and lipid accumulation was accompanied by activation of ER stress/unfolded protein response, as demonstrated by up-regulation of genes encoding key ER stress mediators and by phosphorylation of eIF2 alpha. In contrast to WT mice, Ddit3(-/-) mice were protected from amiodarone-induced ER stress and lipid accumulation. Importantly, amiodarone-induced lipid accumulation was not mediated by de novo hepatic lipogenesis, increased adipose tissue lipolysis or increased hepatic uptake of triglycerides or free fatty acids. Rather, amiodarone strongly increased hepatic mRNA expression of lipid droplet proteins, particularly cidea and cidec, in WT, but less so in Ddit3(-/-) mice, suggesting a link between ER stress and increased triglyceride storage. Moreover, while insulin attenuated amiodarone-induced phosphorylation of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) in WT, it did not affect pHSL in Ddit3(-/-), indicating increased lipolysis and therefore reduced lipid accumulation in these mice. Finally, ER stress attenuation using 2 different pharmacological chaperones reduced lipid accumulation, accompanied by reduced mRNA expression of cidec. In conclusion, amiodarone-induced ER stress drives liver steatosis and may be considered for therapeutic targeting.

Palmitic acid-1- 14 c and hexadecanol-1- 14 c were administered intracerebrally to 18-day-old rats. Incorporation of radioactivity into the constituent alkyl, alk-1-enyl, and 1-acyl moieties, as well as into the 2-acyl moieties, of the ethanolamine phosphatides of brain was determined after 1, 2, 3, 6, and 22 hr. Incorporation of radioactivity from hexadecanol into both alkyl ethers and alk-1-enyl ethers proceeded at a rate more than 10 times higher than from palmitic acid. Hexadecanol was rapidly oxidized to fatty acids which were incorporated into the acyl moieties of the ethanolamine phosphatides. When palmitic acid was used as a precursor, labeled long-chain alcohols could be isolated from the lipid extract. As labeled long-chain aldehydes could not be detected in any of the lipid extracts, alcohols appear to be key intermediates for the biosynthesis of both alkyl and alk-1-enyl glycerophosphatides.

Disruption of mitochondrial dynamics increases stress resistance through activation of multiple stress response pathways

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that can change shape and size depending on the needs of the cell through the processes of mitochondrial fission and fusion. In this work, we investigated the role of mitochondrial dynamics in organismal stress response. By using c. elegans as a genetic model, we could visualize mitochondrial morphology in a live organism with well-established stress assays and well-characterized stress response pathways. We found that disrupting mitochondrial fission (DRP1/drp-1) or fusion (OPA1/eat-3, MFN/fzo-1) genes caused alterations in mitochondrial morphology that impacted both mitochondrial function and physiologic rates. While both mitochondrial fission and mitochondrial fusion mutants showed increased sensitivity to osmotic stress and anoxia, surprisingly we found that the mitochondrial fusion mutants eat-3 and fzo-1 are more resistant to both heat stress and oxidative stress. In exploring the mechanism of increased stress resistance, we found that disruption of mitochondrial fusion genes resulted in the upregulation of multiple stress response pathways. Overall, this work demonstrates that disrupting mitochondrial dynamics can have opposite effects on resistance to different types of stress. Our results suggest that disruption of mitochondrial fusion activates multiple stress response pathways that enhance resistance to specific stresses.

Groundwater in the Ob-Zaisan folded region (Russia) has significant differences in the stable isotope composition of oxygen and hydrogen, which cannot be explained by the geographical and relief features of the region. A probable reason for these differences could be climatic changes in the study area over the past tens of thousands of years. The method of the radiocarbon dating can be perfectly suited in order to determine such small geological ages. The dating of waters using c-14 data gives an understanding of their residence time. It will make it possible to differentiate periods of recharge and accumulation of water in aquifers and track the changes of the water stable isotope composition over time. The estimated water age ranges from 650 to 19,000 years. The enrichment of delta D and delta O-18 values with the decreasing of the water age indicates a gradual warming of the Novosibirsk region climate. These results logically complement the meteorological observations over the last century and may be useful for paleoclimate reconstructions of the region.
