A fast in-situ SINS and Doppler sensor calibration algorithm for underwater vehicle navigation

This paper reports the development and experimental evaluation of an in-situ calibration algorithm of the misalignment mounting angle matrix between the Strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) and Doppler sensor which are practically used for accurate underwater navigation. Most previously reported methods required the SINS to be aligned first to output accurate attitude before the calibration. By separately treating the body frame and the navigation frame attitude update, the algorithm in this paper could be simultaneously carried out during the SINS attitude alignment stage. Simulation and experiment results show that the calibration could be done in 300 s and the position error during the navigation is less than 0.8% of the voyage distance.

A Nonlinear calibration algorithm Based on Harmonic Decomposition for Two-Axis Fluxgate Sensors

Nonlinearity is a prominent limitation to the calibration performance for two-axis fluxgate sensors. In this paper, a novel nonlinear calibration algorithm taking into account the nonlinearity of errors is proposed. In order to establish the nonlinear calibration model, the combined effort of all time-invariant errors is analyzed in detail, and then harmonic decomposition method is utilized to estimate the compensation coefficients. Meanwhile, the proposed nonlinear calibration algorithm is validated and compared with a classical calibration algorithm by experiments. The experimental results show that, after the nonlinear calibration, the maximum deviation of magnetic field magnitude is decreased from 1302 nT to 30 nT, which is smaller than 81 nT after the classical calibration. Furthermore, for the two-axis fluxgate sensor used as magnetic compass, the maximum error of heading is corrected from 1.86 degrees to 0.07 degrees, which is approximately 11% in contrast with 0.62 degrees after the classical calibration. The results suggest an effective way to improve the calibration performance of two-axis fluxgate sensors.

The presence of sensor array errors due to mutual coupling and channel mismatch among array sensors severely degrades the performance of direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms. This paper proposes a novel sensor array errors calibration algorithm based on iterative least squares with projection (ILSP) algorithm, which suits for arbitrary array and only needs one auxiliary signal source. This algorithm firstly estimates the true steering vector by using ILSP, then estimates the sensor array errors by solving the equation between the nominal steering vector and the true steering vector. Comparative computer simulation results are presented to illustrate that the proposed algorithm still has lower computational complexity and higher calibration accuracy on the condition of less snapshots and minor DOA intervals of different sampling time.

Improved Pol-InSAR calibration algorithm using sensitivity equation

Presently the development of researches on the calibration of Pol-InSAR at the stage of the theory and test. There are many limits in the current algorithm. A new improved algorithm is set up with using the sensitivity equation based on the analysis of the errors source. The algorithm get the parameter value by the iterative method based on the sensitivity equation. The algorithm not only improves the precision but also overcome the flaw of homogeneous flat model, reducing the limit condition. By the simulation experiments, it has been proved that the performances of the new improved algorithm is better than the conventional algorithm.

Development of a Portable and Low-Cost Sensor System for Air Pollution Measurement

Air pollution poses a significant threat to human health, yet traditional monitoring platforms and reference-grade instruments are costly and offer limited spatial coverage. This study developed a custom-designed sensor system that integrates electrochemical sensors with a microcontroller for data collection and processing. Various algorithms were tested for sensor data calibration, with the random forest algorithm delivering the highest accuracy and lowest error. Further analysis emphasized the importance of temperature and relative humidity in improving the predictive accuracy of the models, particularly for the calibration of CO and Ox sensors. Model performance was significantly enhanced by using larger training datasets, requiring 28 days of data for optimal calibration of CO and NO sensors. In contrast, the NO2 and Ox sensors performed well with smaller datasets (7 days or more). The sensor system was further employed to monitor variations in particulate matter concentrations and examine the relationships among different pollutants. Results show that reducing NOx and O3 concentrations to 50% of their original levels led to a 25% and 5% decrease in PM, respectively, but their simultaneous reduction resulted in only a 15% decrease, suggesting a nonlinear interaction between these pollutants and PM. The system was also used to monitor air quality inside and outside subway stations, providing real-world validation of the performance of the sensor system and demonstrating its versatility. Overall, this study demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the custom-designed sensor system for air quality monitoring, emphasizing its potential for high-resolution sensor network deployment and its capability to generate valuable data to inform urban air quality policy decisions.

An exact algorithm for self-calibration of two-dimensional precision metrology stages

We describe an algorithm that can achieve exact self-calibration for high-precision two-dimensional (2-D) metrology stages. Previous attempts to solve this problem have often given nonexact or impractical solutions. Self-calibration is the procedure of calibrating a metrology stage by an artifact plate whose mark positions are not precisely known. By assuming rigidness of the artifact plate, this algorithm extracts the stage error map from comparison of three different measurement views of the plate. The algorithm employs the orthogonal Fourier series to expand the stage error map, which allows fast numerical computation. When there is no random measurement noise, this algorithm exactly calibrates the stage error at those sites sampled by the mark array. In the presence of random measurement noise, the algorithm introduces a calibration error of about the same size as the random measurement noise itself, which is the limit to be achieved by any self-calibration algorithm. Optimal Path Planning Method for IMU System-Level calibration Based on Improved Dijkstra's algorithm

The calibration path of system-level calibration directly affects the incentive effect of the error term and thus the calibration accuracy. Currently, the planning of system-level calibration paths is predominantly designed based on personal experience, resulting in insufficient incentive for error terms, low calibration accuracy, and long calibration times. Therefore, this study proposes a system-level calibration optimal path planning method based on an improved Dijkstra's algorithm. First, the system-level calibration optimal path planning problem was modeled as a multi-fork regular root tree model, and the adaptability of Dijkstra's algorithm was improved. Second, a 30-dimensional Kalman filter model was designed for system-level calibration. Then, simulation experiments were conducted, and the results demonstrated that the calibration accuracy of the error term reached 90% within 330 s. Finally, a Micro-Electro-Mechanical system (MEMS) inertial sensor, model PA-IMU488B, was used for experimental verification, and the results were compared with the discrete calibration results. The results indicate that the bias and scale factor errors of the MEMS inertial sensor reached the target accuracy within 5 min. The optimal path planning method for system-level calibration proposed in this study is not dependent on a high-precision turntable, is applicable to sensors of different accuracies, and decreases calibration time while ensuring calibration accuracy.

A method is proposed for wavelength calibration of the reversed-optics polychromators of photodiode array spectrophotometers. The central wavelength of each diode is determined using classical line emission sources and an appropriate algorithm. The method can be used even when the light from the slit image formed on the detector falls on several diodes, whether due to a large slit to diode ratio, detector window effects or other causes.

The possibility for calibrating Power Quality Analyzer by harmonics is presented by using a reference square waveform signal. Based on the calibration model, a control algorithm is synthesized of the calibration measurement procedures and the processing of the uncertainty of the calibration results. Results from the calibration of the Fluke 435 analyzer with the Metrix CX1651 calibrator on voltage and current harmonics are presented, which confirm the possibilities of using the reference square waveform signal.
