Efficient adaptive controllers and recursive filters for centralized control scheme of islanded microgrid with linear and non-linear loads

This paper presents a new combination of adaptive controllers and recursive filters for the operation of the microgrid with different balanced, unbalanced, and nonlinear loads. The suggested control scheme has the cascaded structure of voltage and current loops for positive-and negative-sequence control. The suggested adaptive controllers are the single-perceptron-based PI controller (the 1st adaptive controller) and the least mean fourth-based PI controller (the 2nd adaptive controller). The 1st adaptive controller is employed with the voltage control loop, while the 2nd adaptive controller is integrated with the current control loop. The Gauss-Newton algorithm is newly formulated to recursively estimate the voltage fundamental/harmonics at the load side. The suggested adaptive controllers are compared with other controllers for the same microgrid operation. The practical implementation of the suggested control scheme along with its adaptive controllers and recursive filters is validated using the dSPACE-SCALEXIO platform using rapid control prototyping.

A centralized CB-MPC to Suppress Low-Frequency ZSCC in Modular Parallel Converters

The parallel operation of three-phase converters has become an effective way to achieve modularity. However, zero-sequence circulating current (ZSCC) will appear when the multiparalleled converter modules share a common dc link. In the event that the converters have different output powers and inevitable circuit parameter mismatch, low-frequency (LF) ZSCC can be produced. To address the LF-ZSCC issues, in this article, we propose a centralized carrier-based model predictive control (CB-MPC) scheme for modular parallel converters. This control scheme can be implemented either in master converters or in a dedicate central controller. The CB-MPC can achieve both power control and LF-ZSCC elimination. In addition, with carriers adopted, interleaving and fixed device switching frequency can be easily realized. As such, the benefits of model predictive control and interleaving can be combined. Based on the ZSCC model derived in this article, the elimination of LF-ZSCC can be achieved for more than two paralleled converters when they have different output powers and/or with parameter mismatch. The effectiveness of the proposed CB-MPC has been verified by the simulation and experimental results.

Distributed control is an important framework to handle large-scale systems, however, robust distributed control for polytopic uncertain systems still being a challenge. In this work, we propose a robust distributed framework for interpolation-based control of polytopic uncertain systems. The algorithms proposed consist of both off-line and online computations. The entire system is decomposed into a number of subsystems with smaller number of control inputs. A sequence of nested invariant sets for the entire system, and sequences of state feedback gains corresponding to each subsystem are constructed off-line by minimizing the upper bound of worst-case performance cost in a centralized scheme. The invariant sets constructed are polyhedral sets. At each control iteration, when the state measured lies between any two adjacent invariant sets constructed, a state feedback gain for each subsystem is determined by an interpolation of associated state feedback gains pre-computed. The interpolation problems are based on minimization of a distant from the current state to the adjacent smaller invariant set, solved in a centralized fashion or iteratively solved in a cooperative scheme. Simulation example of quadruple tank system is used to illustrate the algorithms proposed. The cooperative algorithm is capable of inheriting the properties of centralized control scheme but requires lower computational burdens.

In this paper, we consider the impact of cyber attacks on voltage regulation in distribution systems. We employ a centralized control scheme which utilizes voltage measurements from sectionizing switches equipped with sensors for connecting distributed generation. Through detailed case studies by simulations, it is demonstrated that if measurements are falsified by an attacker, voltage violation can occur in the system. However, by equipping the control with a detection algorithm, we verify that the damage can be limited especially when the number of attacked sensors is small. Further discussion is provided on how to enhance the security level of the proposed algorithm.

In this paper, we describe a VLSI architecture of video decoder for AVS (Audio Video Coding Standard). The system architecture, as well as the design of major function-specific processing units (Variable Length Decoder, Deblockding Filter), is discussed. Analyzing the architecture of decoder system and the feature of each processing unit, we develop a system controller combined the centralized and decentralized control scheme, which provides high efficient communication between the processing units and minimizes the size of interconnected buffers. A bus-arbitration algorithm named Token Ring algorithm is designed to control the allocation of the SDRAM bus. This algorithm can avoid the conflicts on bus and reduce the internal buffer size, and its control logic is simple. Our simulation shows that this architecture can meet the requirement of AVS Jizhun Profile@4.0 level real time decoding, without a high cost in hardware and clock rate. Moreover, some design idea in the AVS decoder can be expanded to H.264 because of the simflarity between the two video coding standards.

One of critical issues related to the automatic control and provisioning in all optical networks is how to provide effective lightpath provisioning to improve network performance, such as blocking probability and decision time. Depending on the network topology, configuration, and administration policy, a distributed or centralized control scheme can be employed to manage the routing and signaling. In a distributed control scheme, each node exchanges information with other nodes, but performs routing and signaling independently from other nodes. On the other hand, in a centralized control scheme, each node communicates with a central controller and the controller performs routing and signaling on behalf of all other nodes. Intuitively, the centralized control scheme can obtain a lower blocking probability since the controller has the complete resource availability information. We have studied the two schemes through emulations, determined the signaling and processing overheads and quantified the conditions that favor one approach over the other.
