Long-range dependence (LRD) and other fractal characteristics have been found in network traffic. Among all the estimators of LRD, those based on the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) are preferred due to their efficiency and accuracy, but do not consider the possibility of non-constant LRD parameters. We propose the use of the Schwarz Information Criterion (SIC) combined with the DWT and the Stationary Wavelet Transform (SWT) in order to detect changes in the signal’s variance structure, and segment the traffic into pieces with homogeneous fractal characteristics. The algorithm has been tested with synthetic and real traces.

Binary segmentation, a problem of extracting foreground objects from the background, often arises in medical imaging and document processing. Popular existing solutions include expectation maximization (EM) algorithm, Otsu thresholding, K-sigma thresholding, and the recently proposed generalized principal component analysis (GPCA). We apply these algorithms to segmentation of noisy images with small foreground objects. Such images often arise in change detection applications such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In our experiments none of the algorithms performed sufficient well when the total size of foreground regions was much smaller than the size of the background region. We propose a novel algorithm, called sGPCA, that can robustly estimate the intensity of small foreground objects in the presence of noise. The intensity estimate obtained can be used to determine an optimal threshold value or to initialize EM and Markov random field (MRF) based segmentation algorithms.

Towards Automatic Segmentation of Semantic Video Objects

It remains a challenge to automatically segment video objects consistent with human visual perception and content understanding. Based on extensive literature survey on existing video object segmentation algorithms, we propose in this paper an integrated approach for semantic video object segmentation, where shape cues in successive frames is taken into account in exploiting the principle of change detection together with pre- and post processing to improve its segmentation accuracy. In comparison with existing segmentation techniques, our contribution can be highlighted as: (i) pre-processing via image sharpness to present a strong edge detection and improve change detections; (ii) localizing the positional range of the moving object to reduce the computation followed by the step of getting the difference of these two frames in that position range to extract the moving object mask. Benchmarked by one of the well reported existing algorithms, we illustrate that our proposed algorithm achieves certain level of improvements, and our algorithm also features in automatic semantic object segmentation inside videos

The paper proposes a new algorithm to estimate and suppress highly non-stationary background noise from speech. The algorithm consists of two spectral detectors. The first one uses strict criteria and is based on the Fourier transform of the AMDF (average magnitude difference function). The second one uses loose criteria and is based on variable start minima search. By combining the two detectors, the algorithm instantaneously detects and tracks a sudden change of noise energy level. The proposed algorithm is then merged to conventional MMSE-STSA (MMSE short time spectral amplitude) to suppress non-stationary noise in speech. Simulation results are given to show the superiority of our proposed algorithm.

Development of efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols providing both high throughput performance for data traffic and good quality of service (QoS) support for real-time traffic is the current major focus in distributed contention-based (DCF) MAC protocol research. In this paper, we propose a novel and efficient contention-based MAC protocol for wireless local area networks, namely, the less collision fast resolution (LCFR) algorithm. This algorithm is developed based on the following innovative ideas: to reduce probability of collision and speed up the backoff procedure. We actively redistribute the backoff timers for all active nodes and reduce the backoff timers exponentially fast. The MAC protocol with this new algorithm attempts to provide significantly higher throughput and low latency performance for data services in wireless LANs than the IEEE 802.11 MAC algorithm. We demonstrate that this algorithm indeed resolves collisions faster and reduces the idle slots more effectively.

A new flashlight scene detection approach is presented. It focuses on two techniques: a new flashlight model based on the spatial-temporal characteristics of intensity value for the DC sequence, and a local threshold selection scheme using the sliding window. The advantages of this approach are its good performance for multi-frame and gradual flashlight scene cases, and local threshold selection. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is fast, robust and high accuracy

A fast and precise obtainment of static background in image sequence is key step in monitor control system. A real-time algorithm of dynamic extraction for static background is put forward by means of the characteristics in environment and moving objects with static background. Large amounts of experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm has the properties of rapidity, simplicity, applicability and a small dependence with weather.

Network traffic exhibits long-range dependence (LRD). The estimators of LRD parameters based on the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) are the best in terms of efficiency and accuracy. These estimators do not consider non-stationarity or changes in the LRD parameters. We propose using the Schwarz information criterion (SIC) to detect changes in the variance structure of the wavelet decomposition, and segmenting the traffic into pieces with homogeneous characteristics for the Hurst parameter. The procedure can be extended to the stationary wavelet transform (SWT), a non-orthogonal transform that provides higher accuracy in the estimation of the change points. The SIC analysis can be performed on-line (in the sense of progressively). The algorithm has been tested against synthetic and real traffic traces with promising preliminary results.

In this paper, we use a TASOM-based ACM algorithm for extracting the human eye inner boundary and compare the results with those obtained by GVF snakes. Some pitfalls existing in the original TASOM-based ACM algorithm are introduced and modifications are proposed to solve the problems. Implementation results show that the modifications enhanced the original algorithm and produced good boundary detection results.

We present external-memory algorithms for differencing large hierarchical datasets. Our methods are especially suited to streaming data with bounded differences. For input sizes m and n and maximum output (difference) size e, the I/O, RAM, and CPU costs of our algorithm rdiff are, respectively, m + n, 4e + 8, and O(MN). That is, given 4e + 8 blocks of RAM, our algorithm performs no I/O operations other than those required to read both inputs. We also present a variant of the algorithm that uses only four blocks of RAM, with I/O cost 8me + 18m + n + 6e + 5 and CPU cost O(MN).
