Many video related applications require identification of shot transitions and their type. Several algorithms for detecting both abrupt and gradual transitions exist. However, there is no integrated and robust framework for detecting transition types accurately. We show that combing the individual works of different researchers for identifying different transition types yields poor performance. An approach is presented using several algorithms working on patterns of effective average gradient, double chromatic difference, etc., such that the approach is robust to false detection or false-alarms. A comparison with standard approaches over 3 hours of experimental data on non-trivial video classes, such as commercials, MTV, sports, etc., shows the superiority of our approach.

Deals with a fault tolerance analysis of sensor systems. Redundant and minimal sensor sets are organized into an automata which contains all the possible reconfiguration paths for which the state remain observable. To evaluate the robustness of the observability property with respect to sensor losses, a structural property based on strong and weak redundancy degrees is used This analysis has been developed in previous work Hoblos et al. (1991). The approach is applied to a real plant representing a combat aircraft model.

This paper proposes and investigates an enhancement of the IMM estimation (referred to as smoothing-enhanced IMM or SE-IMM) at the expense of a reasonable increase in computation. It is based on improved reinitialization of the IMM filter by IMM smoothing. An approximate IMM smoothing (IMMS) algorithm is provided. To maintain a minimum overall computational load, the SE-IMM scheme is applied only in the transitional regimes of the IMM filter when the dominant model changes. A cumulative sums (CUSUM)-type statistical test is formulated and employed for the problem of model change detection/estimation. An investigation of the efficiency of the proposed smoothing-enhanced IMM estimation is performed by simulation of a maneuvering target tracking scenario.

Given a temporal sequence of remote sensing images, the difficulty to collect regularly in time ground truth information makes it important to develop automatic unsupervised change detection techniques. Due to its simplicity, image differencing represents a popular approach for change detection. To separate the "change" and "no-change" classes in the difference image, a thresholding-based procedure can be applied. However, the main weakness of an unsupervised change detection approach is the absence of prior information about the scene as it resorts to the spectral information, only, which does not allow the analysis of the typologies of changes occurring between the acquisition dates. In the monitoring of a given study area, the main problem is that the ground truth collection does not usually follow the image acquisitions at the different dates. However, it is easier to have at least one image for which the ground truth is available. In this paper, we propose a partially supervised change detection scheme that is based on the exploitation of the ground truth availability for at least one temporal image. A clustering algorithm is applied to both acquired images and a thresholding-based unsupervised change detection algorithm is applied inside each cluster of the second date image in order not only to identify the presence of changes but also to distinguish between different typologies of changes.

This paper reports anomaly detection results with single and multidimensional data sets using the negative selection algorithm developed by Forrest et al. (1994).

This paper focuses on packet classification and queue management based on the differentiated services (Diffserv) model. A new dynamic queue algorithm and queue-mark scheme is presented based on the analysis of the Diffserv and RED model. Also a rate and RTT aware marker is proposed based on the TCP model. Simulation results show that proposed algorithms and schemes consume less network resources, improve fairness among flows and make Diffserv more efficient.

We propose an energy-based image segmentation algorithm that uses the correlation information among pixels in the same image as well as the temporal correlation across the images in the sequence. We focus on MRI sequences that are extremely difficult to segment on the basis of single images. Our method detects motion-free objects whose intensities change across the image sequence. We introduce an energy functional that exploits the difference in the dynamics of the temporal signals associated with distinct pixels. We develop a level set approach and a region-growing algorithm to minimize the energy functional. Our tests in a transplantation study show that we successfully extract automatically the kidneys and their structures in magnetic resonance (MR) image sequences.

Fractal image compression turns out to be a powerful and competitive technology, which can be successively applied to a still image coding, especially at high compression rates. Unfortunately, a large amount of computation needed for the compression stage remains to be a serious obstacle in exploring this new perspective approach. Diversified attempts are made to improve the situation. In particular, theoretical investigations and experiments show that the problem-oriented use of invariant image parameters (image smoothness estimates) can serve the purpose.

In this paper a new video tracking process is proposed. Our approach uses two description levels for the segmentation mechanism. The first one, the pixel level, performs the extraction of every point in movement, forming, as result, connected regions. For this stage, a new adaptive reference image (ARI) algorithm is described, based on a derivative approach. This choice presents a robust method facing changes in illumination. The second level, the region level, is driven by the contents of a model set. This high level object description, defined by geometric attributes and a motion model lets us associate the ARI process with the handle objects. This stage sets this up as a Bayesian model formulation. The identification and updating process is done by a modified expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. This step establishes the relationship between regions (the ARI process output) and the object models (OM). For each correspondence, the EM procedure is started, updating every attribute of the object description. This framework defines a complete unsupervised tracking procedure, robust regarding occlusions, over- or sub-segmentations and background brightness variations. Several real traffic examples are included at the end of the paper.

This paper describes a novel method for calculating the sensitivity of the manufacturing system throughput to the variables of the machines. The sensitivity analysis needs only a single simulation, yet is easy to use and provides accurate results. This sensitivity analysis is then used to predict the change in the system throughput due to a change of the variables of the machines provided that the system change does not significantly change the bottleneck. These predictions can be used for a local optimization, allowing the use of a steepest descent optimization algorithm. The method is based on improving the momentary shifting bottlenecks. The shifting bottlenecks are detected using the shifting bottleneck detection method based on the active duration, i.e., the time a machine is active without interruption. The method is easy to understand and easy to implement in existing simulation software.
