We propose an adaptive background estimation algorithm for an outdoor video surveillance system. In order to enhance the ability of adaptation to illumination changes and variant noise in long-term running, an improved Kalman filtering model based on the local-region is discussed to dynamically estimate a background image, in which the parameters are predicted by a recursive-least-square adaptive filter. The experimental results on real-world video show that the algorithm can perform robustly and effectively.

We propose a polarity decision carrier recovery algorithm that is useful for carrier acquisition in high order-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation). The PD (phase detector) output and its variance characteristics are mathematically derived and the simulation results are presented. We design a carrier recovery loop with this polarity decision PD and ATC (automatic transfer-mode controller), which is proposed to detect a proper time for mode change and to yield fine phase tracking error in the steady state. While the conventional DD (decision directed) algorithm can only acquire frequency offsets of less than /spl plusmn/10 kHz, the proposed carrier recovery algorithm can acquire up to /spl plusmn/200 kHz without AFC (automatic frequency control). We show the RMS (root mean square) phase error performance using the proposed carrier recovery PLL (phase locked loop).

We examine the problem of detecting negative cycles in a dynamic graph, which is a fundamental problem that arises in electronic design automation and systems theory. We introduce the concept of adaptive negative cycle detection, in which a graph changes over time, and negative cycle detection needs to be done periodically, but not necessarily after every individual change. Such scenarios arise, for example, during iterative design space exploration for hardware and software synthesis. We present an algorithm for this problem, called the Adaptive Bellman-Ford (ABF) algorithm, based on a novel extension of the well known Bellman-Ford algorithm. The ABF algorithm allows us to systematically adapt information for a given graph to a modified version of the graph. We show that the ABF algorithm significantly outperforms previously available approaches for dynamic graphs, which either recompute negative cycle information from scratch whenever a graph is modified, or process the modifications one at a time ("incrementally"). As an application of the ABF technique, we show that it can be used to obtain a very fast implementation of Lawler's technique for the computation of the maximum-cycle mean (MCM) of a graph, especially for a certain important kind of sparse graph. We further illustrate the application of the ABF technique to design-space exploration by developing automated search techniques for scheduling iterative data-flow graphs.

A single-parameter text-line extraction algorithm is described along with an efficient technique for estimating the optimal value for the parameter for individual images without need for ground truth. The algorithm is based on three simple tree operations, cut, glue and flip. An XY-tree representing the segmentation is incrementally transformed to reflect a change in the parameter while intrinsic measures of the cost of the transformation are used to detect when specific tree operations would cause an error if they were performed, allowing these errors to be avoided. The algorithm correctly identified 98.8% of the area of the ground truth bounding boxes and committed no column bridging errors on a set of 97 test images selected from a variety of technical journals.

This paper presents preliminary results of research to improve upon an existing operational forest change detection monitoring strategy in California. Comparisons were. made between Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM scene normalization techniques (absolute versus, relative). Prior to normalization, scenes containing wildfire smoke plumes were successfully corrected using a space-varying haze equalization algorithm. Simple dark object subtraction provided improved performance over relative (pseudo-invariant feature) approaches. A decision tree classifier produced high change map overall accuracy (86%) for five categories of forest cover change.

We propose a two-stage solution algorithm to predict the onset of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) based on half-hour heart rate variability (HRV) signals. Nonlinear feature based on vectors calculated from return map and difference map constructed by HRV signal were developed. The extracted features were fed into their corresponding nearest-neighbor classifiers for parameter adjustment and classification. According to the official scoring results, our algorithm scored 34 points in the screening stage and 40 points in the prediction stage. In addition, the developed algorithm appears to he very robust against measuring noises. For example, with different QRS defectors, the classification results only change slightly (within 5%).

Neural network based adaptive schemes for performing multiuser detection in a direct sequence spread-spectrum code division multiple access communication system are investigated. Simulation and analysis provide the good basis of understanding the advantage and disadvantage between conventional techniques and neural networks in CDMA scope. The simulation results demonstrate the great benefits of the proposed neural network receivers.

Computed Tomographic Colonography (CTC) is a minimally invasive method that allows the examination of the colon wall from the source CT sections or in a virtual environment. The primary goal of CTC is the detection of colonic polyps. There are typically two data sets recorded in supine and prone positions. An important step in polyp detection is the anatomical registration of these datasets. We developed and experimentally validated a method to register complementary supine and prone CTC datasets anatomically, using linear stretching/shrinking operations on the media axis colonic path based on the relative path geometries. To compare improvement in spatial registration of supine and prone datasets, a radiologist determined 5 unique reference points (RP) in the registered and unregistered datasets from each of 5 patients by viewing supine and prone data simultaneously. Initial results suggest that our algorithm is capable of registering supine and prone CTC data anatomically within an approximate range of /spl plusmn/13.2 mm, which corresponds to 0.8% error with respect to the average colon length.

This paper presents a new method for edge level detection. Edge level detection is related to how much attention a person needs to use to detect an edge. The new edge level method is based on the analysis of gradient information of images that is considered as fuzzy information. This fuzzy gradient information is used to determine fuzzy class centroids that define the edge levels. The centroids are obtained with the fuzzy C means algorithm. Once the centroids are defined the gradient information is classified through a distance metric based on the centroids into different edge levels. Results show that this method provides a well-defined methodology to obtain information about edge levels in images that may be used for image analysis purposes. The algorithm also corrects the problems of lost edges and edge level change generated by another edge level algorithm reviewed in this paper.

We describe the design and implementation of an IEEE P1500 compliant programmable BIST for embedded memories. The proposed design can be embedded in other cores or systems with minimum test generation or test application overhead. The programmability of our BIST is useful when the algorithm is being refined while the memory architecture is under production. A variety of test algorithms can be implemented with the programmability provided in our design with no change to the BIST hardware. As an example we demonstrate the implementation of an algorithm to detect open decoder faults. This example is shown for its didactic content as it brings out the programmable axis of our design. Our design also offers means to perform dedicated delay tests as well as scan tests for diagnosis. We show by synthesis experiments that the extra area cost for the BIST hardware is relatively small for medium to large memories.
