In this paper, we propose a hybrid morphology processing units architecture for real-time video segmentation systems. It contains two parts: a gray-level part and a binary part. A partial-result-reuse technique is applied to reduce the hardware cost of gray-level part. For the target of high throughput and flexibility, the binary part is implemented with a programmable PE array. Simulation shows the proposed hardware architecture is efficient in both hardware complexity and memory organization.

Parameterization of a fast implementation of the Ollinger model-based 3D scatter correction method for PET has been evaluated using measured phantom data from a GE PET Advance/sup TM/. The Ollinger method explicitly estimates the 3D single-scatter distribution using measured emission and transmission data and then estimates the multiple-scatter as a convolution of the single-scatter. The main algorithm difference from that implemented by Ollinger (1996) is that the scatter correction does not explicitly compute scatter for azimuthal angles; rather, it determines 2D scatter estimates for data within 2D "super-slices" using as input data from the 3D direct-plane (non-oblique) slices. These axial super-slice data are composed of data within a parameterized distance from the center of the super-slice. Such a model-based method can be parameterized, choice of which may significantly change the behavior of the algorithm. Parameters studied in this work included transaxial image downsampling, number of detectors to calculate scatter to, multiples kernel width and magnitude, number and thickness of super-slices and number of iterations. Measured phantom data included imaging of the NEMA NU-2001 image quality phantom, the IQ phantom with 2 cm extra water-equivalent tissue strapped around its circumference and an attenuation phantom (20 cm uniform cylinder with bone, water and air inserts) with two 8 cm diameter water-filled non-radioactive arms placed by it's side. For the IQ phantom data, a subset of NEMA NU-2001 measures were used to determine the contrast-to-noise, lung residual bias and background variability. For the attenuation phantom, ROIs were drawn on the nonradioactive compartments and on the background. These ROIs were analyzed for inter and intra-slice variation, background bias and compartment-to-background ratio. Numerical simulation and visualization of nonlinear dynamical systems behavior can be easily produced, but these graphical results are of little aid if there are parameters in the system, perhaps causing it to exhibit some kind of qualitative change in its phase portrait bifurcations, or oscillations, for instance. For this reason, in this work we propose some methods to graphically detect, track and represent bifurcations and oscillatory behavior in the phase portrait. We propose an algorithm to advect the stationary behavior of the dynamic system and the representation of several periodic orbits in a higher dimension space. We consider two examples: a tunnel diode oscillator and the Colpitts oscillator. In both cases, our algorithm detects the different limit cycles that occur at different parameter values. These limit cycles are used to render the overall oscillatory behavior of the system as a 3D solid in parameter space.

In this paper we present a frequent sequence pattern mining-based algorithm used for network intrusion detection, which is an application and extension of the SPADE algorithm. It is based on the idea that much behavior on the network appears as sequences of activities, according to the sequence patterns we computed, we can construct the intrusion rule base and legal action rule base, then we can detect known and novel intrusion activities by rule matching. In addition, when the system is running, we use an incremental sequence pattern mining algorithm to complement the rule library in order to avoid re-executing the algorithm on the entire dataset, thereby reducing execution time. The experimental results indicate that this algorithm is efficient enough to meet the needs for active detection of intrusion. Compared with most existing methods used in commercial systems which are built using purely knowledge engineering approaches, our algorithm is more intelligent and adaptive.

An object based spatial-temporal segmentation approach for very low bit rate video sequences is proposed. Temporal segmentation is processed by the absolute displaced frame difference instead of the change detection mask. A fast rain-falling watershed algorithm is used for the spatial segmentation. The final result is obtained by the combination of the temporal segmentation and the spatial segmentation. The proposed method achieves excellent performance with MPEG-4 test sequences of videoconferencing.

We describe an algorithm for change detection which is insensitive to both slow and fast temporal variations of scene illumination. Our algorithm is based on statistical decision theory by using a Bayesian approach. The goal is to detect only temporal changes which are induced by true scene changes, like motion, but not changes due to varying illumination or noise. To this end, our algorithm uses a simple illumination model which is invariant to common camera nonlinearities like gamma-nonlinearity. This is combined with a model for the influence of noise as well as an a priori model for the expected properties of the sought change masks. Key ingredients of the resulting algorithm are a suitable test statistic and an adaptive threshold mechanism. As the algorithm can be applied in a noniterative manner, it is also computationally attractive.

Nonvolatile Memories (NVMs) can undergo different types of disturbances. These disturbances are particular to the technology and the cell structure of the memory element. In this paper we develop a coupling fault model that appropriately models disturbances in flash memories that use floating gate transistor as their core memory element. We describe the behavior of faulty cells under different fault models and how their characteristics change under each model. We demonstrate the inappropriateness of conventional march algorithms for testing flash memories and present a procedure to derive pseudo-algorithms that can be used in testing flash memories. In addition we present an efficient test that detects these disturbances under different fault models developed in this paper.

This paper proposes a new object tracking algorithm called the MAWUPC (motion adaptive weighted unmatched pixel count) algorithm for solving complex background and occlusion problems and for proposing a more effective combination of color and motion information. The proposed algorithm incorporates color transform, Kalman filter and UPC operation to make more effective a combination of color and motion information to track multiple objects of the same color. The proposed algorithm has advantages in rejecting static background objects of similar color without background training and subtraction, and in solving the problem of occlusion among target objects at the same time. This paper shows the efficiency of the proposed MAWUPC with an experiment of face and hand tracking in a complex background even when the hand occludes the face and when hands are crossed.

An image stabilization algorithm is presented that is specifically oriented toward video-surveillance applications. The proposed approach is based on a novel motion-compensation method that is an adaptation of a well-known image-stabilization algorithm for visualization in video-surveillance applications. In particular, the illustrated methods take into account the specificity of typical video-surveillance applications, where objects moving in a scene often cover a large part of an image thus causing the failure of classic image-stabilization techniques. Evaluation methods for image stabilization algorithms are discussed.
