A novel adaptation scheme is proposed to robustly cancel line echoes in complicated phone call environment. where noise interference, frequent double talk and echo path change occur from time to time. The scheme combines the modified Geigel algorithm with a new dynamic, architecture. The modified Geigel takes noise interference into account. When combined with the new dynamic control mechanism, the approach can not only avoid divergence during double talk, but also ensure fastest convergence if echo path changes suddenly. G.168 test results show that the proposed approach actually achieves stable and quite impressive performance such a complicated phone call environment.

A dynamic single-source single-destination shortest path problem on a directed graph is considered. The edge lengths are not constant, but they change as a function of time in a random way. The problem is modeled as a multi-stage decision process and solved by using a re-optimization method that solves the /spl iota/.th stage using the results of the solution of the (/spl iota/-1).th one. An algorithm, called the dynamical shortest path algorithm, is proposed for solving the global problem either finding a solution or detecting that the problem is infeasible and an upper bound on its running time is found. Numerical examples are reported in order to show the effectiveness of the method.

The movement of thoracic cage (TM) measured with a piezoelectric contact sensor placed on the costal wall is presented in this work as a new non-invasive technique for diaphragmatic contraction period (CP) monitoring. The relationship between CP estimated with this technique is compared with estimations done with other respiratory signals commonly employed for physiological research studies: diaphragm length measured with sonomicrometry (DL), transdiaphragmatic pressure (DP) and respiratory airflow (FL). Specific algorithms were developed to determinate the CP in the four signals. Experiments were performed in three pentotarbital-anesthetized mongrel dogs. Two respiratory tests were studied: spontaneous ventilations (SV) and respiration with an inspiratory load (IL). CP estimated with DL signal was used as reference because this signal is the directly related with the diaphragmatic contraction. Different parameters were estimated for the study of the relationship between CP measured with DL signal and CP measured with TM, FL and DP signals. High relationships were obtained in the IL respiratory test. Lower values were obtained in SV protocol, but the parameters obtained from TM signal correlated better with the ones obtained from DL signal than those from FL and DP signals. Results confirm that it is possible to monitor the diaphragmatic contraction timing with a non-invasive piezoelectric contact sensor.

In this paper, a new algorithm for satellite image registration was developed. The main characteristic of the algorithm is to align two images automatically, without requiring either control points or sensor parameters. Thanks to incorporation of a robust estimation mechanism and statistical optimisation technique into a multi-model and multi-resolution framework for intensity matching, the algorithm is able to work with images with large variation in orientation, scaling, illumination and translation. The effectiveness of the algorithm has been verified by an intensive experiment on a great number of real images.

This paper presents a method for detecting building outlines using multiple aerial images. Since data-driven techniques may not be able to account for variability of building geometry and appearances, a key insight explored in this paper is a combination of model-based data driven front end with data driven learning in the back end for increased detection accuracy. The three main components of the detection algorithm are: (i) initialization. Image intensity and depth information are integrally used to efficiently detect buildings, and a robust rectilinear path finding algorithm is adopted to obtain good initial outlines. The initialization process involves the following steps: detecting location of buildings, determining the dominant orientations and knot points in the building outline and using these to fit the initial outline; (ii) learning. A compact set of building features are defined and learned from the well-delineated buildings, and a tree-based classifier is applied to the whole region to detect any missing buildings and obtain their rough outlines; and (iii) verification and refinement. Learned features are used to remove falsely detected buildings, and all outlines are refined by the deformation of rectilinear templates. The experiments, with improved detection rate and precise outlines, demonstrate the applicability of our algorithm.

In recent years, there has been an explosion of interest in mining time-series databases. As with most computer science problems, representation of the data is the key to efficient and effective solutions. One of the most commonly used representations is piecewise linear approximation. This representation has been used by various researchers to support clustering, classification, indexing and association rule mining of time-series data. A variety of algorithms have been proposed to obtain this representation, with several algorithms having been independently rediscovered several times. In this paper, we undertake the first extensive review and empirical comparison of all proposed techniques. We show that all these algorithms have fatal flaws from a data-mining perspective. We introduce a novel algorithm that we empirically show to be superior to all others in the literature.

change detection using a difference picture has been used to detect the location of moving targets and to track them. This method needs the assumption of a static camera, and global motion compensation is required in the case of a moving camera. We suggest a method for finding minimum bounding rectangles (MBRs) of moving targets in the image sequences using moving region detection, especially with a moving camera. If the global motion parameter is inaccurately estimated, the estimated locations of targets will not be accurate either. To alleviate this problem, we introduce the concept of the confidence measure and achieve more accurate estimation of global motion. With a moving camera, the new global motion estimation algorithm performs more precisely and it reduces the background compensation errors for change detection. Experimental results show that the proposed method successfully removes the background region and extracts MBRs of the targets.

An efficient algorithm for singular point (core and delta) detection in fingerprint images is proposed. The algorithm is based on an efficient directional image calculation method. A novel approach for detecting the singular points using signum change curves in the directional images is also proposed. The algorithm is further optimized to achieve faster computational speed. The method was tested with a small fingerprint database and the results were compared visually to the results obtained by human experts. The results show that the algorithm is capable of detecting all the actual singular points at accurate precision with low use of computational time. The proposed algorithm outperformed a widely used algorithm (Karu and Jain, 1996) in detection accuracy and calculation speed.

An algorithm for planar (i.e. no altitude change) conflict resolution in air traffic control (ATC) is presented. By using the point-line duality in 2D of the parallel coordinates methodology, and a field of particles incorporating the motion constraints associated with the aircraft, a "map" in time-and-space of the conflict as well as the conflict-free regions is obtained. Then the algorithm constructs maneuvers, satisfying the constraints, which move the aircraft in conflict to the nearest available conflict-free trajectories. In the process, it is ensured that the maneuvers do not generate new conflicts. The resolution problem, being in general NP-hard, may require very high complexity even in real situations. The need for real-time solutions is handled by cascading (or running in parallel) the algorithm in levels of increasing complexity O(qN/sup (p+1)/logN), where q and N are the number of allowable maneuvers and the number of aircraft respectively, and where the minimum p=1, 2, ..., R needed to resolve a complex conflict scenario is a measure of the scenarios' (i.e. input) complexity. As an illustration, a complex conflict scenario is resolved with complexity O(N/sup 2/logN). The resolution problem is in a sense "dual" to the interception problem. An example is given where the aforementioned time-space map provides specific solutions of the One-Shot problem, which is in general NP-complete. That is "shots", if they exist, are found which intercept all the aircraft.
