The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index (VI) products are aimed at providing consistent, spatial and temporal comparisons of global vegetation conditions, which will be used for operational monitoring of the Earth's photosynthetic vegetation activity in support of land cover classification, change detection, and biophysical interpretations. Standard processing in generating the MODIS VI products includes the temporal compositing process in order to minimize cloud and atmosphere contamination, and standardize sun/view angles. In this study, we evaluated the performance of the MODIS VI compositing algorithm as to whether the algorithm is selecting the cloud-free observations and whether it is producing and selecting observations with view zenith angles closest to nadir. The analyses were conducted over a set of globally-distributed sites covering a wide range of biome types over dry and wet seasons. We found the MODIS VI compositing algorithm to work fairly well over and to semi-arid to temperate zones in both dry and wet seasons, in which nearly all of the composited pixels were cloud-free with view zenith angles closer to nadir than the conventional MVC results. On the other hand, the MODIS algorithm did not improve upon the MVC results well over tropical rain forest areas as cloud covers persisted throughout the period analyzed in these regions.

This paper proposes an inverse-time-lag algorithm combined with one-step inertia filtering algorithm on the analysis of load fluctuation of beaming-pumping and the reason why it occurs in oilfield, taking an example of power detection of beaming-pumping unit related to oilfield load fluctuation. A close loop controller based on this theory enabled the generator to change its working condition and thus the output can be increased or decreased automatically. The effect of energy saving is remarkable.

In this paper an adaptive algorithm is presented for the detection of changes in outdoor video-surveillance images. The proposed method can be considered as basis for a low level image processing stage in a advanced video-surveillance system. The main feature of the algorithm is the robustness to the illumination changes in the scene: this robustness is achieved by using a background updating module working in cooperation with the change detection algorithm. The background updating method works in a different way according to speed of illumination changes. If a sudden illumination change is detected the background is heavily updated while if a slow lightning variation occurs, a continuous soft updating module is used to take into account the long-term slow illumination changes. Experimental results of an automatic people counting system including the proposed low level image processing stage indicate that the method detects changes accurately in case of time-varying illumination.

In this paper, a novel one-pass, real-time approach to video scene change detection based on statistical sequential analysis and operating on a compressed multimedia bitstream is proposed. Scene change detection is crucial in that it enables subsequent processing operations on video shots, such as video indexing, semantic representation, or tracking of selected video information. Since video sequences contain both abrupt and gradual scene changes, video segmentation algorithms must be able to detect a large variety of changes. Our approach models video sequences as stochastic processes, with scene changes being reflected by changes in the characteristics (parameters) of the process. We use statistical sequential analysis to provide a unified framework for robust and effective detection of both abrupt and gradual scene changes.

This paper proposes a video-surveillance system based on a mobile camera. In particular the developed system creates (during the off-line phase) a panoramic multilayer background image allowing one to use common change detection algorithms to search for a change detection binary image. Different approaches to get the change detection images are presented. The performances of the implemented algorithms are presented by using ROC curves.

There is an urgent need to extract key information automatically from video for the purposes of indexing, fast retrieval and scene analysis. To support this vision, reliable scene change detection algorithms must be developed. This paper describes a novel unified algorithm for scene change detection in uncompressed and MPEG-2 compressed video sequences using statistical features of images. Results on video of various content types are reported and validated with the proposed scheme in uncompressed and MPEG-2 compressed video. Furthermore, results show that the accuracy of the detected transitions is above 95% and 90% for uncompressed and MPEG-2 compressed video respectively.

It is often the case that only sparse sequences of videos from scientific underwater surveys actually contain important information for the expert. A system automatically detecting those critical parts, particularly during the post-mission tape analysis, would alleviate the expert work load and improve data exploitation. The authors present a novel set of algorithms to detect in real time significant context changes in benthic videos. The detectors presented rely on an unsupervised image classification scheme: the time changes in the image contents are analyzed in the feature space. The algorithms are explained in detail, and experimental results with real underwater images reported. Various issues related to the complexity of the problem of automatically analysing underwater videos are also discussed.

In huge video databases, an effective video indexing method is required. While manual indexing is the most effective approach to this goal, it is slow and expensive. Thus automatic indexing is desirable, and previously various indexing tools for video databases have been developed. For efficient video indexing and retrieval, the similarity measure is an important factor. This paper presents new similarity measures between frames and proposes a new algorithm to detect scene changes using a cross entropy defined between two histograms. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is fast and effective compared with several conventional algorithms to detect abrupt scene changes and gradual transitions including fade in/out and flash light scenes.

This paper describes a new real-time approach for detecting changes in grey level image sequences, which were taken from stationary cameras. This new method combines a temporal difference method with an adaptive background model subtraction scheme. When changes in illumination occur the background model is automatically adapted to suit the new conditions. For the adaptation of the background model a new method is proposed, which avoids reinforcement of adaptation errors by performing the adaptation solely on those regions that were detected by the temporal difference method rather than using the regions resulting from the overall algorithm. Thus the adaptation process is separated from the results of its own background subtraction algorithm. The change detector was successfully tested both in a vision-based workspace monitoring system for different kinds of non-autonomous service robots and in a surveillance scenario, in which it was the task to detect people in a subway-platform scenario. The proposed real-time algorithm showed recognition rates of up to 90% in the foreground and 84% in the background and performed in all cases at least 12% better than the alternative method of adaptive background estimation which uses a modified Kalman filtering technique.

We present a scheme for automatically partitioning videos into scenes. A scene is generally referred to as a group of shots taken at the same site. We first propose a motion annotation algorithm based on the analysis of spatiotemporal image volumes. The algorithm characterizes the motions within shots by extracting and analyzing the motion trajectories encoded in the temporal slices of image volumes. A motion-based keyframe computing and selection strategy is thus proposed to compactly represent the content of shots. With these techniques, we further present a scene change detection algorithm by measuring the similarity of the representative keyframes in shots.
