We propose a simple modification on Fiebig's (see Proc. of the IEEE ICC'96, p. 0-95, 1996) REC algorithm for multiuser detection of FH/MFSK systems replacing hard limiter with soft limiter. The performance improvement of our modified REC algorithm has been confirmed with simulations. For the parameter of interest, the capacity can be increased about 5% or more without degrading the reliability.

This paper describes a robust vehicle detection system which detects vehicles in the rear view of the host car. Two cameras with 12 mm focal length mounted behind the back pane are used. Reliable vehicle recognition up to 150 m and the exact track localization of the vehicles are the key features of the system. The robust stereo algorithm generates object hypotheses which are tracked with Kalman filter. Using the steering angle and the detected obstacles, the driven way of the host vehicle is reconstructed. This information is used for a lane change assistant.

In this paper a new shot change detection method using near shortest transversal path is proposed. First all the frames in the video are represented by points in the color histogram space, and then the similarity distances between every two points are computed, and all the points are aligned according to the near shortest transversal path. In this path the time space between nearby points could be used to detect shot change. This method does not need careful selection of threshold and performs well in the special effect shot change. In theory this algorithm is computable and the computational complexity could be further reduced by frame sampling method.

We propose an effective and efficient wipe detection method based on the macroblock information of the MPEG compressed video. Two types of wipe transitions are taken into consideration. By analyzing the prediction directions of B frames, which are revealed in the MB types, the scene change region of each frame can be found. Once the accumulation of the scene change regions covers most area of the frame, the sequence will be considered a wipe transition sequence. Besides, uncommon intra-coded MBs of the B frame can also be applied as an indicator of the wipe transition. A very simple analysis based on small amount of MB type information is sufficient to achieve wipe detection directly on MPEG compressed video.

State machine replication is a common approach for making a distributed service highly available and resilient to failures, by replicating it on different processes. It is well known, however that the difficulty of ensuring the safety and liveness of a replicated service increases significantly when no synchrony assumptions are made, and when processes can exhibit Byzantine behaviors. The contribution of the work is to break the complexity of devising a Byzantine-resilient state machine replication protocol, by decomposing it into key modular abstractions. In addition to being modular, the protocol we propose always preserves safety in the presence of less than one third of Byzantine processes, independently of any synchrony assumptions. As for the liveness of our protocol, it relies on a Byzantine failure detector that encapsulates a sufficient amount of synchrony.

In this paper the performances of integrated power control and advanced receivers algorithms are analyzed in the case of fixed step size algorithms, where power control command is issued as simple 1-bit command. The performances of the constrained power control and advanced receivers algorithms, where transmitter power cannot exceed some pre-defined maximum are also analyzed. It has been shown that fixed step size algorithms converge but the number of iterations is higher than that of inverse algorithms. Also, it is observed that power control command errors reduce the performance of the system. The constrained algorithm outperforms the non-constrained when the system is close to, or is infeasible.

We address reconfigurable algorithms for managing replicated data with strict consistency requirements, that is, whenever the user performs an update operation, the update is applied to all reachable copies as part of the update protocol. A key issue of designing such algorithms is to determine how often one should detect and react to failure conditions so that reorganization operations can be performed at the appropriate time to improve the availability of replicated data. We use dynamic voting as a case study to illustrate how often such failure detection and reconfiguration activities should be performed so as to maximize the data availability. We show that there exists an optimal period at which the failure detection and reconfiguration activities should be performed to optimize the system availability. Stochastic Petri nets (SPNs) are used as a tool to facilitate our analysis.

This paper describes an efficient approach for the detection of line junctions in gray-level images. The algorithm is divided into two steps. First, given the lines extracted from the original image, local line curvature is estimated. For this purpose, two different measures of curvature are proposed: the rate of change of direction of the orientation vector along the line, and the mean of the dot products of orientation vectors within a given neighborhood. The second step involves the localization of junctions. Examples are provided based on experiments with synthetic and real images.

Currently, the most popular algorithm for hidden Markov model (HMM) decoding is the Viterbi algorithm with beam search to reduce search space. However, it is a difficult problem in determining a beam width beforehand. To address this problem, we propose a novel approach on search space reduction. Following the definition of HMM, we first detect the possible change points between HMM states sequentially, then use the change points to locate a subspace for searching. Using a combined forward and backward scheme, we can detect two boundaries consisting of change points to enclose the subspace. The Viterbi algorithm or any other search algorithms can then be applied in the subspace. The experiments on a speaker verification task show that the proposed algorithm is about 4 times faster than a full search algorithm while the accuracy is almost the same. On the same decoding speed, the proposed algorithm provides a better accuracy than a beam-search approach. For an HMM with S states, the upper bound of speedup comparing to the full search approach is approximately S/3.

This paper proposes the new method of image compression. We have already developed self-organized image compression. Several nodes are yielded and self-organized according to a gray scale level of pixels. In this work, edge information is extracted by comparing these blocks and the input signal is also compressed into each of the nodes by the using similar self-organized clustering (SOC). The method of edge detection is not realized by the change of the pixel but by the difference of properties which have each cluster area. Only by using a quite simple algorithm, accurate edges are evaluated and then a good image compression can be realized. Additionally, we introduce a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to optimize the cluster structure. Also evaluation of the validity is discussed.
