This paper proposes the new method of image compression. We have already developed self-organized image compression. Several nodes are yielded and self-organized according to a gray scale level of pixels. In this work, edge information is extracted by comparing these blocks and the input signal is also compressed into each of the nodes by the using similar self-organized clustering (SOC). The method of edge detection is not realized by the change of the pixel but by the difference of properties which have each cluster area. Only by using a quite simple algorithm, accurate edges are evaluated and then a good image compression can be realized. Additionally, we introduce a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to optimize the cluster structure. Also evaluation of the validity is discussed.

A rapidly adapting tracking filter, working with a comparatively low data-rate, is described. The filter uses position, course, turn rate, speed and speed rate as the state parameters to handle the curved parts of the trajectory better. The trajectory is continually modeled as moving under a transverse acceleration and a longitudinal acceleration, each large or negligible, which change the turn rate and the speed rate accordingly. Wild maneuvers are detected and corrected rapidly to a large extent, with a high confidence level, mild maneuvers are left to a gradual correction through small filter gains, as in steady state filter algorithms, and medium maneuvers are gracefully fitted in between, through an innovation-based common algorithm.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was launched December 1999 on the polar orbiting Terra satellite and since February 2000 has been acquiring earth observation data. The Terra satellite has onboard exterior orientation (position and attitude) measurement systems designed to enable unaided navigation of MODIS data to within approximately 150 m (1/spl sigma/) at nadir. A global network of ground control points will be used to improve the navigation to approximately 50 m (1/spl sigma/). This approach allows an operational characterization of the MODIS geolocation errors and enables individual MODIS observations to be geolocated to the sub-pixel accuracies required for terrestrial global change applications.

The accumulation of contaminating materials on the rotor blades of a gas turbine flowmeter is a condition of concern to the manufacturers, since it can lead to loss of calibration. Over time, a deposit of tar and heavy oil mixed with sand and dust can build up on the rotor blades, which causes the meter factor to change from its original value of calibration. A novel neural network technique is described for the detection of blade contamination. The method uses a C language implementation of the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network, which uses a cumulative back-propagation (BKP) algorithm to train and be tested on blade passing time vectors (BPT).

This paper presents a very fast algorithm for a video codec based on H.263. This algorithm includes "fast motion detection", "fast motion estimation", and "referred frame selection". By the algorithm we implement a software-based multipoint-to-multipoint videoconferencing system over an IP network. In the system one can see and talk with other participants (up to 4) in real time simultaneously.

Presents a novel approach to the tracking of multiple articulate objects in the presence of occlusion in moderately complex scenes. Most conventional tracking algorithms work well when only one object is tracked at a time. However, when multiple objects must be tracked simultaneously, significant computation is often introduced in order to handle occlusion and to calculate the appropriate region correspondence between successive frames. We introduce a near-real-time solution to this problem by using a probabilistic mixing of low-level features and components. The algorithm mixes coarse motion estimates, change detection information and unobservable predictions to create accurate trajectories of moving objects. We implement this multifeature mixing strategy within the context of a video surveillance system using a modified Kalman filtering mechanism. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed tracking and surveillance system.

Currently, the most popular algorithm for hidden Markov model (HMM) decoding is the Viterbi algorithm with beam search to reduce search space. However, it is a difficult problem in determining a beam width beforehand. To address this problem, we propose a novel approach on search space reduction. Following the definition of HMM, we first detect the possible change points between HMM states sequentially, then use the change points to locate a subspace for searching. Using a combined forward and backward scheme, we can detect two boundaries consisting of change points to enclose the subspace. The Viterbi algorithm or any other search algorithms can then be applied in the subspace. The experiments on a speaker verification task show that the proposed algorithm is about 4 times faster than a full search algorithm while the accuracy is almost the same. On the same decoding speed, the proposed algorithm provides a better accuracy than a beam-search approach. For an HMM with S states, the upper bound of speedup comparing to the full search approach is approximately S/3.

A new algorithm for segmenting and tracking deformable (shape-changing) linear (thin and long with negligible diameter) objects in video images is presented. The core of the algorithm is to detect the two boundary curves of a deformable linear object within adaptive tracking windows. The boundaries are found by analyzing the gray value gradients within the tracking windows, The algorithm provides a robust tracking of the shape- and width-changing object by using a fuzzy estimation of the object's membership function at the tracked points. The result of the segmentation is a list of base describing the shape of the object. This list is used to define features for shape change detection. For the feature analysis, we propose an algorithm which works well for several classes of feature curves. Experiments on robotic applications using both algorithms show promising results.

The features of the endometrium are considered as the most important factors in infertility treatment. The paper presents a new approach for estimating the endometrium based on a multiple threshold technique and a general mathematical methods. The approach exploits gray level information to organize the constrain the interpretation of the motion object by a recursive model. The recursive model is employed for threshold optimization of motion information segmentation. This is implemented by repeatedly shrinking the dimension of the maximum potential range of motion with an adaptive threshold through the whole process. The estimated values comprise motion frequency and thickness; the former is determined by change detection of the pixel value in a sequence of images during a given time period, and the latter is the result of the motion object's dimension divided by its extended length. Experimental results indicate that with the proposed algorithm if is possible to accurately estimate the thickness and motion frequency of the endometrium.
