Presents an algorithm for active exploration of the environment by a mobile robot when performing global localization. During the localization process interesting regions for future exploration are selected based on already detected features and on the hypotheses generated by the localization algorithm. The localization process is improved by presenting it a richer set of features. The proposed algorithm provides highly robust global localization in real world environments with very low computational effort spent in finding exploration goal points. Experimental results are given, demonstrating the effectiveness of the algorithm in a number of different situations.

In 3D machine vision metrology, it is important to estimate the disparity between stereomappings. We discuss some related methods and introduce a new stereo matching method based on the objects' character. The prior knowledge of the scene is presented in the form of characteristic vectors in the procedure of matching, and therefore the stereo matching is converted to the graylevel-geometric space matching from the graylevel only based feature. As a result, we realized a novel effective algorithm, which could effectively achieve high accuracy and wide disparity range.

Automatic steering of tractor-semitrailer is studied with integrated control, detection and isolation of sensor and actuator fault (FDI) in closed loop. We formulate both the steering control and the fault detection and isolation problems using LMI-based H/sub /spl infin// design. Controller reduction is performed using cone complementary linearization algorithm. The performance of the steering controller and FDI capabilities are simulated by considering several maneuvers such as lane keeping and lane change with parameter variations and sensor and actuator faults.

In this paper we propose a novel video segmentation algorithm that is capable of reliably detecting both types of dissolves in addition to cuts and wipes based on the analysis of the spatio-temporal behavior of joint probability images (JPIs). Experimental results for identifying scene transitions in various video clips that contain moderate and significant amounts of movements are demonstrated.

This paper presents the quaternion color difference edge detector, a new approach to detection of edges in color images. Based on a new type of convolution, the color difference subspace and the proposed edge detector are expressed analytically by using the algebra of the quaternion. The proposed color image edge detector generates edges only where sharp changes of color occur in the original image. The experimental results have verified the improved performance of the new edge detector compared to some well known methods.

With the fast growth of video resources, efficient video classification and management are becoming more and more important. Video partitioning is a key issue in video classification. The video partitioning involves the detection of boundaries between uninterrupted segments (video shots) of scenes. Shot boundaries can be classified into two categories, gradual transition and instantaneous change (called camera break). detection of a gradual transition is considered to be difficult. Block-based image comparison was proposed to detect shot boundaries. Unfortunately, if the differences of the corresponding blocks in the images are measured by gray levels, the method will make false alarms when the gray level change suddenly due to reasons other than shot shifts such as illumination variation which is common in news video. What is more, the step-variable algorithm can not distinguish wipe and dissolve. It is likely that step-variable algorithm will make false alarms of gradual transitions. In this paper, the proposed algorithm named MVS (model based video segmentation) can distinguish illumination variation from camera breaks as well as wipe from dissolve. Moreover, the positions of the gradual transition are located correctly. MVS is especially efficient in detecting wipes. Experimental results are reported in the paper to validate the proposed method.

A novel acoustic echo canceller for speakerphone system based upon iterative maximal length correlation (IMLC) algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is robust to double talk because of the nature of the ML sequence; it also iteratively reduces the far-end speech's effects. This simple structure was found to perform very well. We also perform a rigorous convergence analysis and derive the lower bound for the coefficient error. Computer simulations also confirm our theoretical results.

Describes an efficient approach for the detection of line junctions in gray-level images. The algorithm is divided into two steps. First, given the lines extracted from the original image, local line curvature is estimated. For this purpose, two different measures of curvature are proposed: The rate of change of direction of the orientation vector along the line and the mean of the dot products of orientation vectors within a given neighborhood. The second step involves the localization of junctions. Examples are provided based on experiments with remotely sensed images containing road intersections.

For basic level students of foreign languages, normal speed speaking is very difficult to understand perfectly, because of lack of training in understanding of oral language. However when the speed of speaking slows down, in most cases understanding increases. This fact suggests that to improve learning of the foreign language, it is necessary that students can adjust the speed of speaking according to their own understanding level. This paper presents a comparison of two time scaling algorithms when they are used to assist learning of a foreign language. Both algorithms consist of a pitch detection stage and time scaling stage. The pitch detection of both algorithms is based on autocorrelation method of the speech signals proposed by Rabiner et. al. (1976). The time scaling in the first method consists in duplicating the pitch periods of voiced segments while keeping unchanged unvoiced ones. The second method is based on the short time Fourier transform. Experimental results, MOS (mean opinion scoring) are given using Spanish, French, German, Russian, Japanese and Italian which show desirable features of both time scaling algorithms when they are used to assist the students to learn foreign languages. The performance of both algorithms when the pitch detection stage has some noise is also shown.

Video classification and segmentation are fundamental steps for efficient accessing, retrieval and browsing of large amounts of video data. We have developed a scene classification scheme using a hidden Markov model (HMM) based classifier. By utilizing the temporal behaviors of different scene classes, the HMM classifier can effectively classify video segments into one of the pre-defined scene classes. In this paper, we describe two approaches for joint video classification and segmentation based on a HMM, which works by searching for the most likely class transition path utilizing the dynamic programming technique.
