Window based network flow control protocols, such as TCP, modulate the number of unacknowledged packets the protocol is allowed to have outstanding. Such protocols change the size when they receive positive or negative acknowledgements, where the latter kind may be inferred from timeouts. Together with a communications channel that loses packets at random, such a protocol induces a stochastic process on the window size. We consider a broad class of window based protocols, and analyze various statistics of the induced stochastic process. We demonstrate that all these protocols can be treated analytically using the theory of semi-Markov processes.

We propose a superimposition algorithm than can be employed by a substrate to change its behavior according to current conditions or properties of the mobile environment. The algorithm has some interesting features such as it is completely distributed, works on-line, does not generate extra messages, and is based on unstable predicates. The algorithm proposed can be used by multiple local controllers that use information only from the subset of the participating mobile units. This is certainly an advantage over a centralized approach that is likely to be more expensive than distributed decisions since there are delays in the communication and the cost of sending extra messages.

Two recently published flux weakening schemes for surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous (SMPMS) motor drives have offered estimable advantages over previous solutions. The first scheme uses values of the voltage reference to generate an adequate flux weakening component of the stator current, whereas the second method detects an increase of the tracking error in torque-producing current component and uses the error signal for the flux weakening control. The viability of the algorithms has been demonstrated and the schemes have been compared and analyzed in steady-state operation. The transient behavior is very important for electric vehicles and other high-performance applications. Here, the authors analyze the transient response characteristics of both schemes when a sudden change in the torque reference is received. The paper also describes an approach to practical regulator design and parameter selection for the flux weakening control section.

Face detection in complex environments from color images

The detection of faces in color images is important for many multimedia applications. It is the first step for face recognition and it can be used for classifying specific shots such as anchorperson and talk show shots. In this paper, we present an algorithm for the detection of faces in color images. The algorithm works by first detecting areas of skin color, then it applies a top-down and a bottom-up analysis to the skin colored areas. The algorithm has been tested on images from news clips and other television programs. The results show that the algorithm is robust and works even for cases where there are objects in the background that have colors similar to the skin.

We propose a two stage motion-based region merging algorithm for content-based coding. It uses a six-parameter motion model and the change image obtained from the conventional change detector. First, the type of each region is decided as one of an object, background and uncertain region using the change image. In the first region merging stage, all pairs of two adjacent object regions and two adjacent regions are extracted. Affine motion model parameters for each pair are computed. Then, the merging for one pair that has the smallest error is performed for each type. In particular a large threshold value is used to efficiently merge many redundant regions segmented in the background. In the second region merging stage, the merging for the adjacent uncertain regions or adjacent regions of different types are performed with the same procedure as that of the first stage. A small threshold value is used to merge the extracted adjacent regions which are represented with homogeneous motion parameters while preventing the merging of adjacent object region and background region in the wide range of the threshold value. From the experimental results the proposed merging algorithm is shown to efficiently reduce many redundant regions into one or a few regions in the wide range of the threshold value.

The operational methodology used to analyze and reduce errors caused by biases and trends in the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) geolocation data is described. MODIS is scheduled for launch in 1999 on the polar orbiting EOS-AM1 satellite and will acquire daily global data in 36 spectral bands at three spatial resolutions. The satellite has onboard exterior orientation measurement systems designed to enable unaided geolocation of MODIS data to approximately 450 m (3/spl sigma/). A global network of ground control points will be used to improve the navigation to approximately 150 m (3/spl sigma/). The ground control points will be used to determine static biases in the interior orientation every MODIS repeat cycle (16 days). Over longer periods analyses will be performed to determine if there are any trends or cyclical variations. This approach will allow an operational characterization of the MODIS geolocation errors and will enable individual observations to be geolocated to the sub-pixel accuracies required for terrestrial global change applications.

Automatic identification of special effects is a prerequisite for video indexing and intelligent video encoding. In this paper we present an algorithm for fade and dissolve scene change detection in video sequences. We use statistical features of the images to identify these special effects in uncompressed video. DC-estimation is used to evaluate statistical features both in H.263 and MPEG-2 compressed video. Results show that these special effects can be identified accurately with the proposed scheme.

We present a simple method for performing real-time collision detection in a virtual surgery environment. The method relies on the graphics hardware for testing the interpenetration between a virtual deformable organ and a rigid tool controlled by the user. The method enables to take into account the motion of the tool between two consecutive time steps. For our specific application, the new method runs about a hundred times faster than the well known oriented-bonding-boxes tree method.

In this paper, we present approaches for detecting camera cuts, wipes and dissolves based on the analysis of spatio-temporal slices obtained from videos. These slices are composed of spatially and temporally coherent regions which can be perceived as shots. In the proposed methods, camera breaks are located by performing color-texture segmentation and statistical analysis on these video slices. In addition to detecting camera breaks, our methods can classify the detected breaks as camera cuts, wipes and dissolves in an efficient manner.
