We present new results on a distributable change-detection method inspired by the natural immune system. A weakness in the original algorithm was the exponential cost of generating detectors. Two detector-generating algorithms are introduced which run in linear time. The algorithms are analyzed, heuristics are given for setting parameters based on the analysis, and the presence of holes in detector space is examined. The analysis provider a basis for assessing the practicality of the algorithms in specific settings, and some of the implications are discussed.

Proposes a magnetic measurement principle to develop a balance sensor. Basically, the sensor is composed of a spherical vessel sealing a certain amount of liquid, a mushroom-shaped float and a permanent magnet. The circular plated magnet is fixed on the root of the float stem. As the liquid moves in the vessel, the float changes the position of the magnet. And the Hall effect devices located around the vessel sense the change of balance with the aid of a signal processor. The density of the Hall effect devices and the algorithm for determining the direction of the resultant acceleration are considered. Also, the results of experiments for magnet's position and the angle of balance are shown. The proposed method is effective in detecting all directions of the resultant acceleration of motion and gravity with uniform resolution, since the sensor has no rotation axes.

In implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) heart rate can not discriminate lethal tachycardias from benign ones which lead to false therapy. The blood pressure (BP) waveform is the clue for classifying these varieties. The authors have designed and developed an automated online analysis of BP waveforms and propose a possible method to detect tachycardias by examining BP waveforms only. The associated tachycardia algorithm that discerns the change of stroke volume output of the heart identified unstable tachycardias with a rate of 90.5% (specificity) and 67.6% (sensitivity). Detected tachycardias exhibited irregularities in interval and magnitude of BP waveforms. However, for tachycardias which were not detected there were regular BP waveforms although the magnitude and rate were different from that of sinus rhythm. It is concluded that this feature can be the clue for discrimination of hemodynamically stable and unstable tachycardias.

In this paper, we present a neural network-based face detection system. Unlike similar systems which are limited to detecting upright, frontal faces, this system detects faces at any degree of rotation in the image plane. The system employs multiple networks; a "router" network first processes each input window to determine its orientation and then uses this information to prepare the window for one or more "detector" networks. We present the training methods for both types of networks. We also perform sensitivity analysis on the networks, and present empirical results on a large test set. Finally, we present preliminary results for detecting faces rotated out of the image plane, such as profiles and semi-profiles.

We address the problem of detecting changes (faults) in systems and signals. We establish new results on a class of quadratic change detection algorithms which are based on the /spl chi//sup 2/ statistic (/spl chi//sup 2/-CUSUM, /spl chi//sup 2/-GLR and /spl chi//sup 2/-FSS algorithms). We compare optimal sequential and nonsequential (fixed-size sample) strategies in the problem of abrupt change detection in multivariate Gaussian signals. However, the optimal sequential algorithms lead to a burdensome number of arithmetical operations. In order to reduce the computational burden we examine the recursive versions of the /spl chi//sup 2/-CUSUM and /spl chi//sup 2/-GLR algorithms. It is shown that these recursive algorithms have statistical performances which are similar to the original algorithms. We also propose a very simple heuristic solution to the case of unknown magnitude of change. This solution is a competitor for the window-limited GLR algorithm.

We describe a contour tracking method based on the Hausdorff distance to track non-rigid objects moving in two-dimensional images. The method operates by extracting two-dimensional templates of the non-rigid objects which vary from one frame to the next, from a sequence of images. The main idea of this method is to decompose the variation of the non-rigid object contours in space into two components: two-dimensional shape changes and two-dimensional motions. The two-dimensional motion components are factored out by the match of the next frame image with the templates which are transformed by a group of transformations such as translation, scaling, and rotation. The two-dimensional shape change components are achieved by setting a proper threshold to allow some biases, so the template adaptability is improved. The two major assumptions underlying the method are: the two-dimensional motions are in the scope of the images; the two-dimensional shape of the objects will change slowly from one frame to the next. Combined with the pyramid algorithm and zero-crossing detection algorithm, experiments conducted on human contour tracking are reported.

We present fingerprint smoothing, classification and identification based on the singular points (delta and core points) obtained from the directional histograms of a fingerprint. Fingerprints are classified into two main categories that are called Lasso and Wirbel. The process includes directional image formation, directional image block representation, singular point detection and decision, and fingerprint classification and identification, respectively. By matching decision vectors with minimum error, this algorithm is simple and fast.

Vision-based navigation is investigated using SHOSLIF that incorporates states and a visual attention mechanism. The problem is formulated as an observation-driven Markov model (ODMM) which is realized through recursive partitioning regression. A stochastic recursive partition tree (SRPT), which maps a preprocessed current input raw image and the previous state into the current state and the next control signal is used for efficient recursive partitioning regression. The SRPT learns incrementally: each learning sample is rejected or learned "on-the-fly". The proposed scheme has been successfully applied to indoor navigation.

We introduce a method for segmenting surfaces of three-dimensional objects using two images of the object obtained from the same viewpoint under different illumination conditions. The method allows surface spectral reflectance to vary from point to point and requires only weak conditions on the uncalibrated illumination configuration. The algorithm is based on the local recovery of an illumination change matrix that depends on surface geometry but not on the spectral reflectance of the surface. We show that for typical sensor noise levels, this technique can be used for the reliable detection of surface orientation changes of a few degrees. This approach can be generalized using a calibrated setup to recover a dense set of surface orientation estimates from two images. We present a set of experiments demonstrating the capability of the algorithm for the segmentation of planar surfaces in the presence of spatially varying spectral reflectance.

Mobile communications dictates the use of low power detection and estimation algorithms to prolong the battery life. We present a very low power detection scheme and evaluate its performance. This scheme can be used instead of the optimal quantized detectors when the noise variance, or other problem parameters, are unknown or change online. This detector uses an adaptive discrete time stochastic resonator that consists of a simple Schmitt trigger. Theoretical results evaluating the detection capability of such a device are presented, and simulations show an improvement in the detection probability over other low power schemes.
