This paper considers the decomposition of video sequences into so-called video object planes, which is required for the content-based representation of visual objects in MPEG-4. A new segmentation algorithm is described that identifies physical objects using a morphological motion filter. For the object of interest, a two-dimensional binary model is derived based on areas in the scene that are moving differently from the background. This model is updated each frame to pick up possible rotation and changes in shape of the object. Temporal correspondence is established by a Hausdorff object tracker: The binary model sequences guide the actual video object plane extraction. Since the model points correspond to edges detected by the Canny operator; a high object boundary location is achieved. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed technique can successfully extract the physical object from video sequences.

One of the algorithms included in producing the change detection product for the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) employs directly partitioning the red/infrared spectral space in order to detect human-induced land cover change. Monthly look-up tables for tall woody vegetation, short herbaceous/woody vegetation, and bare ground have been created to detect spectral migration from one cover type to another. Using training data from the 8 km Pathfinder data set and the University of Maryland's 1 km global classification, a classification tree algorithm was used to partition the monthly look-up tables for all 12 months across four regions of the globe. The globe was split into northern tropical (0-23.5 degrees north), northern extra tropical (>23.5 degrees north) southern tropical (0-23.5 degrees south) and southern extra tropical (>23.5 degrees south) regions. The classification tree was used to find core areas approaching 100% accuracy for each of the 5 classes. Spectral boundaries between classes were revealed in the tree structure by poor classification accuracies, and were labelled as mixed areas. In this manner the problem of overlaying two full classifications will be avoided as mixed pixels will be labelled as such, and only pixels migrating from one core area to another will be labelled as change. Compensation for phenological changes is built into the algorithm as the look-up tables are made for each month in each region. For example, in the northern extra tropical region winter look-up tables have a much smaller percentage of core areas present in the red-infrared space compared to summer look-up tables, due to seasonal brown-off and snow cover. Results from two test areas reveal the utility of this method, particularly in reducing errors of commission.

A procedure for mapping melting snow areas is described which is based on change detection methods. The algorithm was applied for snow mapping in alpine drainage basins and on glaciers, using ERS SAR images. The comparison with snow maps from Landsat Thematic Mapper images shows in general good agreement. Differences are observed mainly in areas with patchy snow cover where SAR tends to underestimate, and Landsat to overestimate, the snow extent. The developed software aims at operational generation of SAR snow maps for snowmelt runoff forecasting.

Video databases and video on demand represent an important application of the evolving global information infrastructure. However, video querying involves a lot of user interaction and feedback based query refinement, which can generate large traffic volumes on the network if full video segments are sent. To aid in efficient video browsing, search and retrieval across the network, we need to find good compact representations for long video sequences. Representative frames (Rframes) provide such a representation. Extant algorithms use scene change detection to segment video into shots and pick Rframes. However, scene change detection techniques fail badly in presence of gradual scene changes which are quite prevalent in most videos. We present another way of finding Rframes using fuzzy clustering without dealing with any scene change detection algorithms. Fuzzy clusters provide a more natural approach to this problem since membership of a frame in some particular scene is not binary. This allows us to handle gradual scene changes. We report on our approach, present preliminary experimental results, and discuss ongoing work.

Polar sea ice extent is an important input to global climate models and is considered to be a sensitive indicator of global climate change. Studies have shown that Ku-band scatterometer data are sensitive to the presence of sea ice. An algorithm has been developed for sea ice extent detection using data from the NASA scatterometer (NSCAT). This paper discusses the extension of that algorithm to data from future scatterometers, QuikSCAT and Seawinds. Simulated Seawinds data are generated from NSCAT data. Experiments are conducted using Seawinds data as inputs to the NSCAT algorithm. The results show that these data can be used to estimate the ice edge although with a lower degree of accuracy than when NSCAT /spl sigma//sup o/ data are used. While NSCAT requires 6 days of data to effectively implement the algorithm, Seawinds will only require 1-2 days of data due to the wider swath, lack of a nadir gap, and better single pass cell overlap.

A central step in content-based video retrieval is the temporal segmentation of video. An application independent approach to video segmentation is to detect temporally contiguous segments without significant content change between successive frames. Each such segment is termed a shot. A high-performance shot boundary detection-based video segmentation algorithm is proposed. The technique uses unsupervised clustering on a multiple feature input space, followed by a heuristic elimination process to detect, with almost perfect accuracy, shot boundaries in the video. With an extremely high accuracy coupled with a very small number of false positives, this algorithm outperforms most of the existing techniques.

A public key watermark for image verification and authentication

We propose a public key watermarking algorithm for image integrity verification. This watermark is capable of detecting any change made to an image, including changes in pixel values and image size. This watermark is important for several imaging applications, including trusted camera, legal usage of images, medical archiving of images, news reporting, commercial image transaction, and others. In each of these applications, it is important to verify that the image has not been manipulated and that the image was originated by either a specific camera or a specific user. The verification (the watermark extraction) procedure uses a public key as in public key cryptography, and hence it can be performed by any person without the secure exchange of a secret key. This is very important in many applications (e.g., trusted camera, news reporting) where the exchange of a secret key is either not possible or undesirable.

When recording electrical signals from a whole nerve, an increase in the firing frequencies of the fibers contained in the nerve causes an increase in the rectified and time-averaged recorded signal. The latter thus represents superimposed neural activity and can be used for detecting changes in the recorded afferent and/or efferent nerve traffic. The possibility of detecting a fast bladder pressure increase from an increase in the recorded pelvic nerve afferent activity was investigated in this study. Two signal processing approaches were compared: simple discriminant-window thresholding and cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm. Both are shown to be able to detect a sudden rise in bladder pressure with the adaptive CUSUM-algorithm being more reliable, but slower.

Environment mapping is a very complex procedure that requires high CPU performance. For the last few years, laser scanners have become more and more important for mobile robots. Using their data requires many transformations between different coordinate systems. This new approach deals with a mapping within the coordinate system of the scanner, therefore it is very fast. The log-Hough transformation performs line finding in scans in a very efficient way, which speeds up mapping.

The automatic organization of video databases according to the semantic content of data is a key aspect for efficient indexing and fast retrieval of audio-visual material. In order to generate indices that can be used to access a video database, a description of each video sequence is necessary. The identification of objects present in a frame and the track of their motion and interaction in space and time, is attractive but not yet very robust. For this reason, since the early 90's, attempts have been applied in trying to segment a video in shots. For each shot a representative frame of the shot, called k-frame, is usually chosen and the video can be analyzed through its k-frames. Even if abrupt scene changes are relatively easy to detect, it is more difficult to identify special effects, such as dissolve, that were operated in the editing stage to merge two shots. Unfortunately, these special effects are normally used to stress the importance of the scene change (from a content point of view), so they are extremely relevant, therefore they should not be missed. It is very important to determine precisely the beginning and the end of the transition in the case of dissolves and fades. In this work, two new parameters are proposed. These characterize the precision of boundaries of special effects when the scene change involves more than two frames. They are combined with the common recall and precision parameters. Three types of algorithms for cut detection are considered: histogram-based, motion-based and contour-based. These algorithms are tested and compared on several video sequences. Results show that the best performance is achieved by the global histogram-based method which uses color information.
