An incremental inductive learning and change detection method is proposed which generates rule sets that contain general rules underling the observed data and detects changes in them. Unlike most of other algorithms, the method is an incremental algorithm that generates the rule set in the course of data observation. The method is motivated by a demand for an automatic procedure for quick modeling of systems subject to change and detecting the changes. The method starts with a most general rule and performs specialization of the rules when a conflicting piece of data is observed. Also the unification of over-specialized rules is done to enhance the generality. The change detection is based on a statistical hypothesis test of a change in error rate of the rule set assuming randomness in the data presentation order. Simulation studies have been carried out on a toy problem, where a cat observes a mouse and builds a rule set describing the mouse's behavior while the mouse disappears and a new one comes in. The results show that the method can yield a general rule set and that it can successfully detect the change of the mice.

This paper presents a new approach to spatial change detection. The algorithms developed are based on the use of basic morphological filters and on more advanced concepts such as geodesic transformations. Such techniques are able to overcome the traditional problems associated with change detection from remotely sensed multi-temporal images. As a matter of fact it is already known that traditional methods using the concept of direction variation of the change vector are inadequate for a precise detection. These frequential techniques lay on very limitative statistical hypotheses: gaussian distribution, a priori determined ratio of change, very large images and relatively small ratio of change. However in a prior study, it was determined that the basic operators of mathematical morphology were partly corrupting the results of change detection by introducing bias on the shape of the objects and also by shifting the edges in the displacement direction of the structuring element. The geodesic transformations are correcting these topological difficulties in an elegant way. The usual threshold step is replaced by appropriate structuring element interval of sizes. Thus, it becomes possible to treat the spatial change detection problem by using a single formalism. The first results show that the particles of change are detected even for very slight radiometric variations, with the advantage of taking into account the configuration of the neighbourhood.

Fast arithmetic operators have always been an important topic in computer design. There are two kinds of arithmetic operators: fixed-time and variable-time ones. While fixed-time arithmetic operators have been widely studied, variable-time operators seem to be more and more interesting for low-power design and very high performance computing. Self-timed arithmetic operators are able to deliver their result in an average computation time less than the worst case time. We present an architecture, which is a variant of the carry select adder, for the addition of n-bit numbers with a O(/spl radic/(log/sub 2/n)) average computation time.

The effects of auxiliary input signals on detecting changes in CARMA models via statistical tests are discussed. It is assumed that parameters of the system before the change are known whereas those describing the after-change situation are unknown. The performance criteria for the input design are based on the local and asymptotic properties of the test. It is concluded that the optimal input spectrum consists of a finite number of frequencies and that a suitable choice for the input can drastically improve the detection performance.

Mobile communication links require adaptive equalization with a fast rate of convergence while keeping computational effort at reasonable levels. In this paper we propose to combine known algorithms for blind equalization in order to exploit their desirable properties to reach this goal. A switching criterion is proposed which is based on the change in the equalizer impulse response between iterations of the adaption algorithm and may be used to detect changes of the channel impulse response. algorithms under consideration include Godard's algorithm, stop-and-go algorithm, and tricepstrum equalization algorithm (TEA).

This paper suggests a new test algorithm for parallel testing of neighborhood pattern sensitive faults (NPSFs) in large size random access memories (RAMs). The algorithm tests an /spl radic/n/spl times//spl radic/n bit oriented memory in O(/spl radic/n) time to detect Type-2 static, passive and active NPSFs. The algorithm uses Hamiltonian sequence for static and passive NPSFs and an Eulerian sequence for active NPSFs. A group of cells are accessed simultaneously in a write operation. The cells sharing the same word line are read in parallel and mutually compared. The existing RAM architecture has been modified very little to achieve the parallel access and the mutual comparison.

Software-only MPEG video compression is flexible and usually cost-effective way to generate high quality MPEG video streams. Because the encoding rate is low on general purpose processors, a parallel encoder running on a network of workstations is an attractive platform for speeding up the computation. Constant bit rate encoding and scene change handling are, however, challenging jobs in such distributed implementations. First we present a simple but effective scene change handling algorithm in which the computational load imposed by cut detection is shared among the resources. An important aspect is that our method does not increase the communication overhead in the system. Then, a two-pass bit allocation and rate control algorithm is described, which guarantees the VBV compliance of the bit streams.

The MPEG video compression standard effectively exploits spatial, temporal, and coding redundancies in the algorithm. In its generic form, however, only a minimal amount of scene adaptation is performed. Video can be further compressed by taking advantage of scenes where the temporal statistics allow larger inter-reference frame distances. This paper proposes the use of motion analysis (MA) to adapt to scene content. The actual picture type (I, P, or B) decision is made by examining the accumulation of motion measurements since the last reference frame was labeled. Depending on the video content, this proposed algorithm can achieve from 2% to 13.9% savings in bits while maintaining similar quality.

The purpose of this study was to detect the uterine contraction and other events in uterine electromyography (EMG). Classical statistical algorithms of change detection use a criterion based on signal variance in a sequential manner. The idea of the present work is to generalize these algorithms in a multidimensional way using a multiscale signal decomposition. In this case, the classical algorithms are modified by use of a criterion based on covariance matrix estimates. The isolation is achieved by a multi-hypothesis test. Thus, the successive events are detected by a single multidimensional detector and classified regarding their covariance matrix. This approach leads to different detection and isolation delays, the former being defined by the detection threshold, the latter depending on the estimation time of the covariance matrix.

In this paper, a new model-based tracking algorithm is proposed for real time performance. The matching process includes two aspects of: feature extraction using local minimum energy; and global matching of a known 3D model against the projected features. The algorithm is robust to change in lighting and backgrounds. The small motion hypothesis is used for fitting of feature energy which is defined as the negative absolute value of the edge strength. An autoregressive AR(1) model is employed for detecting incorrect matches in terms of the feature energy.
