A study was launched to develop a new melt algorithm that would detect the onset of melt from the entire Arctic sea ice basin with no dependence on ice type. The HR melt algorithm developed produces initial dates when sea ice snowpack begins to show melt in the passive microwave remotely sensed data. The melt algorithm was then applied to three years of data to show the robust nature of the algorithm for different ice type locations. The results show that the entire data set now needs to be analyzed to produce a melt climatology. Since a melt algorithm has been established and a melt climatology will be produced. In addition, other locations can be analyzed, since the algorithm produces dates of melt onset that can be compared to other locations within the Arctic Basin. This will allow a more complete understanding of the relationships between the atmospheric effects and the ice conditions, especially considering modeled climate variations.

A new motion estimation scheme for an MPEG like video coder is suggested. The proposed 'adaptive motion estimation' scheme consists of five functional blocks: temporal subband analysis (TSBA), extraction of temporal activity distribution (TAD), scene change detection (SCD), picture type replacement (PTR), and a temporally adapted block matching algorithm (TABMA). All five functional blocks are developed primarily based on temporal subband analysis. According to the significance of the TAD, the TABMA adjusts its nonuniform motion vector search area. Also, a newly proposed SCD and PTR integrated method can prevent poor motion prediction for a video sequence containing abruptly changing scenes. Computer simulation results show that the proposed motion estimation scheme is superior to that of typical MPEG like video coders: it requires far less computations, and it shows much better performance.

This paper addresses the problem of blind start-up scheme to the decision-directed MMSE algorithm for CDMA receivers. A new blind start-up scheme is proposed. It is based on a new code-aided blind algorithm that adopts an approximate MSINR criterion. Furthermore, it is capable of utilizing the detected data symbols of the users that previously entered the net and have switched to the normal data transmission stage. Analyses and simulation studies show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the detection performance and capacity as comparing to the existing algorithms, and, if further utilizing these detected data symbols, is comparable in performance to the BMMSE algorithm with known channel.

Most edge detectors are based on detecting points in the image with a high gradient value. However, in general, they omit the idea that the edge must be a connected line of pixels. Instead of that, these techniques normally use a global threshold value, to control the quantity of edge points detected. Due to this, many other edge points are detected, but some of them do not really belong to an edge. In this paper we propose a new edge detector, that detects entire pieces of 1-pixel-thick lines. This algorithm is more robust concerning the choice of the threshold value, because it works with the average gradient value of each piece of line. Two previous filters are needed: a contrast process, to enhance the edges, and a morphological denoising to remove noise but without blurring the edges in the image. The proposed algorithm starts from pixels with a high gradient value, and follows neighbor pixels connecting new points.

With the more usage of conveyor belts in coalmines, the possibility of fire is increasing and the loss caused by conveyor belts fire is becoming more and more. The traditional alarm system using single sensor or relatively simple algorithm processing fire signals cannot meet the need of belt fire detection in coal mine. Multi-sensor fire detection system is one of the important current developments in automatic fire detection technology. The crucial point in the detection is using more sophisticated algorithm to process fire signals. In this thesis, we introduce the principle of an algorithm based self-adaptive neural fuzzy network which has four inputs - temperature (T), rate of temperature change (¿T), dense of carbon monoxide (CO) and rate of CO dense change (¿CO). The experiment result shows that using this system can enhance the adaptive ability to environment and reinforce the ability of resisting interfere. At the same time, combining the fuzzy inference and neural network used in processing the fire signals makes the system more intelligent and decrease the false alarm rate.

We address the problem of detecting and isolating abrupt changes in signals and systems with random disturbances. An asymptotic optimal solution to this problem, which has been proposed in previous works, leads to the number of arithmetical operations at time t which grows to infinity with t. Moreover, the proposed criterion of optimality does not impose a constraint on the probability of false isolation when the change time t/sub 0/>1. In this paper we propose another more realistic criterion, establish a new simple recursive change detection/isolation algorithm and investigate its statistical properties. This algorithm can be recommended for on-line implementations.

Automating tools for geo-locating and geo-orienting static cameras is a key step in creating a useful global imaging network from cameras attached to the Internet. We present algorithms for partial camera calibration that rely on access to accurately time-stamped images captured over time from cameras that do not move. To support these algorithms we also offer a method of camera viewpoint change detection, or "tamper detection", which determines if a camera has moved in the challenging case when images are only captured every half hour. These algorithms are tested on a subset of the AMOS (Archive of Many Outdoor Scenes) database, and we present preliminary results that highlight the promise of these approaches.

In this paper, we present a method of segmenting video to detect cuts with accuracy equal to or better than both histogram and other feature based methods. As well, the method is faster than other feature based methods. By utilizing feature tracking on corners, rather than lines, we are able to reliably detect features such as cuts, fades and salient frames. Experimental evidence shows that the method is able to withstand high motion situations better than existing methods. Initial implementations using full sized video frames are able to achieve processing rates of 10-30 frames per second depending on the level of motion and number of features being tracked; this includes the time to generate the MPEG decompressed frames.

Background subtraction is a fundamental preprocessing task in computer vision. This task becomes challenging in real scenarios due to variations in the background for both static and moving camera sequences. Several deep learning methods for background subtraction have been proposed in the literature with competitive performances. However, these models show performance degradation when tested on unseen videos; and they require huge amount of data to avoid overfitting. Recently, graph-based algorithms have been successful approaching unsupervised and semi-supervised learning problems. Furthermore, the theory of graph signal processing and semi-supervised learning have been combined leading to new insights in the field of machine learning. In this paper, concepts of recovery of graph signals are introduced in the problem of background subtraction. We propose a new algorithm called Graph BackGround Subtraction (GraphBGS), which is composed of: instance segmentation, background initialization, graph construction, graph sampling, and a semi-supervised algorithm inspired from the theory of recovery of graph signals. Our algorithm has the advantage of requiring less labeled data than deep learning methods while having competitive results on both: static and moving camera videos. GraphBGS outperforms unsupervised and supervised methods in several challenging conditions on the publicly available change detection (CDNet2014), and UCSD background subtraction databases.

The importance of video content analysis and retrieval increases as storage capacity grows in consumer devices. Videotext detection is very important for video indexing and retrieval enabling features such as commercial detection, intelligent keyframe extraction, program boundary detection and others. In this paper we propose multi-layered videotext detection tailored to an MP EG encoding scheme. We approached the videotext detection from a perspective of scalability and flexibility for different platforms with varying resources. We propose a three-layered algorithm. The first layer works in compressed domain features such as macroblock type. The second layer works in semicompressed domain such as DCT coefficients. The third layer works in uncompressed domain, i.e. spatial domain. As the next layer gets implemented the complexity increases but so does the precision of the algorithm. On constrained platforms, only the first layer would be implemented. On high-end platforms all three layers could be implemented to enable a full suite of indexing and retrieval applications.
