This paper proposed an automatic approach to change detection using GIS data and remote sensing images. The approach is based on an object-based SVM classification. A pixel-merge segmentation algorithm using spectral information and area size is utilized to generate image objects. Samples are calculated using remote sensing image and historical land use vector data automatically. Then, an object-based SVM classification is used on remote sensing images. Object boundaries originated from GIS are basic elements to calculating class percentage in per region. Comparing class percentage and historical class property, if the class percentage is large and different to historical property, these regions are identified as changed. The paper first introduced the general approach, and then defined and discussed the spectral channels used for the classification. The results of test areas are followed. Finally, experimental results confirmed the advantages and efficiency of the proposed approach.

An incremental inductive learning and change detection method is proposed which generates rule sets that contain general rules underling the observed data and detects changes in them. Unlike most of other algorithms, the method is an incremental algorithm that generates the rule set in the course of data observation. The method is motivated by a demand for an automatic procedure for quick modeling of systems subject to change and detecting the changes. The method starts with a most general rule and performs specialization of the rules when a conflicting piece of data is observed. Also the unification of over-specialized rules is done to enhance the generality. The change detection is based on a statistical hypothesis test of a change in error rate of the rule set assuming randomness in the data presentation order. Simulation studies have been carried out on a toy problem, where a cat observes a mouse and builds a rule set describing the mouse's behavior while the mouse disappears and a new one comes in. The results show that the method can yield a general rule set and that it can successfully detect the change of the mice.

Automatic video scene change detection is a challenging task. Using audio or visual information alone often cannot provide a satisfactory solution. However, how to combine audio and visual information efficiently still remains a difficult issue since there are various cases in their relationship due to the versatility of videos. We present an effective scene change detection method that adopts the joint evaluation of the audio and visual features. First, video information is used to find the shot boundaries. Second, the audio features for each video shot can be extracted. Lastly, an audio-video combination schema is proposed to detect the video scene boundaries.

Scene change detection in videos is a primary requirement of video processing applications used for the purpose of generating data needed by video data management systems and digital rights management (DRM) systems. Scene change data can be used in DRM systems for effective IPR protection by means of watermarking and fingerprinting selected scenes. In this paper, we present a 2-pass algorithm for abrupt scene change detection in videos based on χ 2 color histogram comparison of subwindows of successive frames and sliding window detector method. In the proposed method, we improve the efficiency of scene change detection by a second level inspection of the detected scene changes using a fixed average and a moving average to ascertain whether the detected scene boundary is correct or the scenes need to be combined. This method gives precision and recall values better than any existing method.

The problem of quickest detection of a change in the distribution of a n × p random matrix based on a sequence of observations having a single unknown change point is considered. The forms of the pre- and post-change distributions of the rows of the matrices are assumed to belong to the family of elliptically contoured densities with sparse dispersion matrices but are otherwise unknown. We propose a non-parametric stopping rule that is based on a novel summary statistic related to k-nearest neighbor correlation between columns of each observed random matrix. In the large scale regime of p → ∞ and n fixed we show that, among all functions of the proposed summary statistic, the proposed stopping rule is asymptotically optimal under a minimax quickest change detection (QCD) model.

Due to the lack of support on the high resolution image in short time, the land-cover change detection is always applied on the multi-temporal remote sensed images with coarse resolution. They contain a large number of mixed pixels, which can seriously limit the utility of change detection. Pixel unmixing (PU) can be applied to improve this situation through deriving the abundances and generating the fractional change map. Thus it can be regarded as a more reasonable tool to monitor the sub-pixel changes. In this paper a new sub-pixel land-cover change detection method based on PU and EM (Expectation Maximization) algorithm is proposed. The results of experiment on the multi-temporal thematic mapper (TM) images show that the proposed method not only can obtain higher change detection accuracy, but also can maintain better geometric properties comparing with the traditional methods.

A monocular vision based rear vehicle detection and tracking system is presented for Lane change Assist (LCA), which does not need road boundary and lane information. Our algorithm extracts regions of interest (ROI) using the shadow underneath a vehicle, and accurately localizes vehicle regions in ROI by vehicle features such as symmetry, edge and shadow underneath vehicles. The algorithm realizes vehicle verification by combining knowledge-based and learning-based methods. During vehicle tracking, templates are dynamically created on-line, tracking window is adaptively adjusted with motion estimation, and confidence is determined for tracked vehicle. The algorithm was tested under various traffic scenes at different daytime, the result illustrated good performance.

The efficiency of event detection in video surveillance applications depends on the performance of the early stage of content change detection. However, this stage encounters difficulties deriving from the presence of noise in image acquisition devices. Furthermore, illumination variations in the surveyed scene tend to cause degradation in change detection results. This paper introduces a real-time statistic change detection technique which employs a block-based clustering procedure for the estimation of the noise model. The method is applied in conjunction with a brightness normalization stage for the suppression of ambient illumination variations. Additionally, an adaptation of the technique for real-time surveillance of subway environments is proposed.

A significant field of study in the recent age is the detection of changes in land cover and land use (LCLU), because any conversion of land cover its impacts on the local or the global environment. LCLU change detection is an important topic of research for the earth scientist using satellite data. The enormous amount of earth science data motivates the data mining community to explore for a reliable, effective, and affordable solution to the earth science domain problem (i.e., land cover change detection problem). In this study, segmentation-based techniques for detecting changes in land cover are illustrated. The proposed algorithms employ a two-step process to detect abrupt changes in the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) time series. The first step reduces the dimension of time series by using the fast fourier transform (FFT) on each annual segment and the second step applies the clustering technique to the reduced dimensions of the annual segments. The quantitative analytic approaches have been used to examine the performances of the proposed methods.

In this work, we proposed a shot-change detection algorithm for intra-frames of H.264/AVC compressed video. The traditional video codec, such as MPEG-1, 2, H.261 or H.263, transforms the macroblocks of intra-frames into DCT domain, but H.264/AVC video codec requires the intra prediction process prior to DCT processing, therefore DCT coefficients of H.264/AVC represent differently from those of the traditional codec. The past algorithms of shot change detection using DCT coefficients are not suitable for H.264/AVC any more. In this paper, we compare the statistical distribution of intra prediction modes with an adaptive threshold to detect the shot change. Our algorithm also combines the luma with the chroma feature to detect shot change for color video. The experimental result shows our algorithm can achieve accurate detection rate in rapid speed.
