It is not known if land cover change is accelerating due to traffic close to main roads. We developed a monitoring concept for the detection of land cover change along main traffic routes in Switzerland. Because of the small structured landscape and the necessity to detect rather small changes, data of different spatial and temporal resolution will be used. Landsat data is used in order to get actual information, existing inventories and aerial images for the calibration of the classification algorithms of the satellite images. The land cover classification will be analyzed on a hectare grid and landscape indicators are calculated. The comparison to other areas enables conclusions of traffic dependencies.

Wireless sensor networks are often deployed to detect occurring changes in the environment. Detectability of the changes in the ambient environment contributes to the success of emerging sensor networks. The major challenges in designing change detection algorithms for wireless sensor networks are the restricted resources of sensors such as memory, communication bandwidth, and battery power. We propose a decentralized change detection framework for wireless sensor networks, present a novel algorithm using DFT coefficients as synopsis structures from signal-oriented data streams, which can reduce the amount of local memory required by the change detector while assuring accuracy of local detection. Furthermore, we show how to use a gossip-based framework for transmitting and aggregating the change detection results from the ambient area of events to the sink. This helps to find consensus among nodes in order to improve global detection accuracy while maintaining reasonable communication cost for the wireless sensor networks. We make empirical evaluations to show the effectiveness and the deployment potential of our change detection schemes in wireless sensor networks.

This paper presents a solution for real-time satellite image processing. The focus is on the detection of changes in MODIS images. We present a distributed algorithm for change detection which is based on extracting relevant parameters from MODIS spectral bands. The algorithm detects the changes between two images of the same geographical area at different time moments. The algorithm, able to run in a Grid system, is scalable, fault-tolerant. We present the experimental results of this algorithm considering three spectral bands and different input images. We also propose a method to integrate applications based on this algorithm into the MedioGRID architecture.

We present a fast and statistically principled approach for land cover change detection. The approach is illustrated with a geographic application that involves analyzing remotely sensed data to detect changes in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in near real time. We use the Wal-Mart land cover change data set as a nontraditional way to monitor and validate known cases of NDVI change. A reference distribution has been justified to fit the available data. An adaptive metric based on the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) of normal scores derived from p-values is tracked for new or streaming data, leading to alarms for large or sustained changes. A heuristic algorithm based on the property of the metric is proposed for change point detection. The proposed framework performed well on the validation dataset

In this paper, a change detection method of multitemporal remote sensing (RS) images based on weighted nonnegative matrix factorization (WNMF) is proposed. Firstly, difference image is generated according to the different types of input images. Then, in order to effectively explore the change information in two original RS images, WNMF is applied to extract features from the resulting difference image, in which a new weight matrix is designed by using difference values of the corresponding pixels. In addition, sparse constraint based on l 1/2 -norm regularization is enforced into WNMF to learn sparser features. Finally, a binary change mask (CM) is achieved by partitioning the extracted features with the k-means clustering. Experimental results on two pairs of RS images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

We have undertaken mapping of the ice sheet margin and grounding zone in East Antarctica using Landsat TM and ERS SAR images in order to establish an accurate baseline for the detection of future change. As part of this work we have implemented a computer-aided edge-following algorithm to provide an objective and consistent mechanism for analysis of different images. Accurate geocoding of the images is achieved with sparsely distributed ground control points and a transformation of the images which preserves their inherent geometric properties and internal positioning accuracy. An initial comparison with published maps has identified significant changes in several large ice shelves.

The increasing availability of remote-sensing images, acquired periodically by satellite sensors on the same geographical area, makes it extremely interesting to develop monitoring systems capable of automatically producing and regularly updating forest-cover maps of the considered site. In this paper, we designed and developed new object-based change detection algorithms, which are aimed at updating forest-cover maps by remote sensing images. The forest-cover change detection system includes several key modules: image segmentation, difference images processing and binary change detection model using threshold. These modules are evaluated by multi-temporal QuickBird remotely sensed data set: (1) In the image segmentation module, multi-scale segmentation algorithm was used to form the image objects. (2) In the difference image module, spectral value and NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index) were taken as input data. Correlation coefficient and t-test algorithms based on objects are used to develop difference images. (3) In the binary change detection module, change maps obtained from spectral value and NDVI are compared. Finally, experimental results carried out on multi-temporal QuickBird remotely sensed data set confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system.

This paper presents an Abrupt change detection (ACD) algorithm based on Mathematical Morphology Gradient (MMG) for Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM). In the present research of MMG, it is focused on filtering the original signals rather than locating change points. Therefore, this paper considers this approach to detect abrupt changes. For the purpose of evaluating the performance of different algorithms, the True Positive Rate (TPR) and the F-score are employed in this paper. The simulation studies have been carried out on low-frequency signals and high-frequency signals from the Reference Energy Disaggregation Data Set (REDD) respectively. The MMG algorithm, which has the advantages of high accuracy and fast calculation speed, is superior for both two types of signals. In addition, it can provide not only the information of the position of a change but also the direction of a change. The results demonstrate that the MMG algorithm shows better performance than the CUmulative SUM (CUSUM), the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) and the Generalized Likelihood Ratio (GLR) algorithms.

To supplement our multimodal object detection system, designed to identify `suspicious' objects along a roadside during troop movement, we have implemented a change detection feature. As a pre-processing step, a shadow-removal algorithm is introduced to minimize false positives and false negatives caused by temporal variations in natural light.

Speaker change detection is a necessary first step in several applications. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised two pass algorithm for speaker change detection in conversational speech. Generalized Likelihood Ratio (GLR) metric is used in the first pass to coarsely identify speaker change points and during the second pass, these candidate change points are finely analyzed assuming that the initial part of the conversational audio is from one of the speakers. The final change point detection decision is based on the likelihood probability function computed for the segments between two consecutive candidate change points using the known speaker model. The proposed two pass algorithm has been tested on a question and answer session of a financial audio report of a company and also on an audio track of a movie.
