This paper proposes a magnetic measurement principle to develop a balance sensor. Basically, the sensor is composed of a spherical vessel sealing certain amount of liquid, a mushroom-shaped float and a permanent magnet. The circular plated magnet is fixed on the root of the float *** as the liquid moves in the vessel, the float changes the position of the magnet. And the Nail effect devices located around the vessel sense the change of balance with the aid of a signal processor. The density of the Nail effect devices and the algorithm far determining the direction of the resultant acceleration are considered. Also, the results of experiments for magnet's position and the angle of balance are shown. The proposed method is effective in detecting all directions of the resultant acceleration of motion and gravity with uniform resolution, since the sensor has no rotation axes.

. A fast algorithm for MPEG compressed video segmentation based on macroblock (MB) is presented in this paper. The proposed method can detect the scene change boundaries accurately through the macroblock information of B-frame and P-frame which can be extracted from the encoded bit-stream directly without total decompression for MPEG bit-stream, so the detecting speed is quick. Simulation results in different sequences show that the proposed algorithm is effective and accurate for detecting scene change boundaries in APEG video.

The movement of nodes in MANETs results in a change in routes, requiring some mechanism for determining new routes. In this paper, a Distance-Based Location-Aided Routing (DBLAR) for MANETs had been proposed By tracing the LI of destination nodes and the change of distance between nodes to adjust route discovery dynamically, the proposed routing algorithm can avoid flooding in the whole networks. Besides, Distance Update Threshold (DUT) is set up to reach the balance between real-time ability and update overhead of location information (LI) of nodes. Meanwhile, the detection of relative distance vector (RDV) can achieve the goal of adjusting forwarding condition. Simulation results reveal that DBLAR performs better than LAR in terms of packet successful delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay and routing-load, and the set of DUT and RDV has much effect on this algorithm.

An unordered labeled tree is a tree in which each node has a string label and the parent-child relationship is significant, but the order among siblings is unimportant. This paper presents an approach to the nearest neighbor search problem for these trees. Given a database D of unordered labeled trees and a query tree Q, the goal is to find those trees in D that "approximately" contain Q. Our approach is based on storing the paths of the trees in a suffix array and then counting the number of mismatching paths between the query tree and a data tree. To speed up a search, we use a hash-based technique to filter out unqualified data trees at an early stage of the search. Experimental results obtained by running our techniques on phylogenetic trees and synthetic data demonstrate the good performance of the proposed approach. We also discuss the use of our work in XML and scientific database management.

Video segmentation is a key unit in content-based video encoding systems, such as MPEG-4. Existing algorithms are too complex for real-time applications, and hardware implementation is infeasible because of the global and irregular operations. In this paper, a hardware system for video segmentation is proposed from algorithm level to hardware architecture level. A hardware-oriented algorithm is first proposed to generate accurate object masks with local pixel operations and morphological operations, which are suitable for hardware implementation. After that, the hardware architecture is designed based on partial-result-reuse architecture and programmable morphology PE array architecture, which can achieve both high flexibility and throughput. A prototype chip is implemented to achieve the processing speed of 30 QCIF frames per second and 7,680 morphological operations per second at 26 MHz. It also shows the hardware cost is small, and the proposed video segmentation hardware system is suitable to be integrated into any content-based video encoding systems.

The new nonparametric algorithm of radar signal disorder detection task has been considered. The algorithm is based on spectral estimating of a few signal samples of a few close windows and nonparametric Wilkockson's test application to compare them. The algorithm can be used for radar signal detection specifically in the tasks of turbulence detection in clouds and precipitation as well as for moving target, detection. The efficiency of the new algorithm is analyzed.

The removal of lunar radiance in Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) - Day/Night Band (DNB) images is explored based on the Dark Object Subtraction method. A Dark Object is selected and the difference of the expected vs. observed values is used as a correction coefficient to rescale all values and form a compatible times-series of DNB data at 24h intervals. The proposed method is compared to a rigorous lunar irradiation correction method. The results indicate that the proposed method could be used in conjunction to the existing methods, to further stabilize the time-series.

In this paper we consider the problem of quantifying target distortion in lossy compression using the JPEG2000 Region Of Interest (ROI) option. This approach brings about new problems that need to be addressed, such as automated selection of target regions and ROI preservation parameters. By combining variations of traditional metrics and newly developed segmentation-based image quality metrics, we illustrate several ways to quantify target distortion using ROI preserving compression for various methods including JPEG2000.

The research proposes an approach of story segmentation for news video using multimodal analysis. The approach detects the topic-caption frames, and integrates them with silence clips detection, as well as shot segmentation to locate news story boundaries. On test data with 135,400 frames, the accuracy rate 87.9% and the recall rate 98.7% are obtained. The experimental results show the approach is valid and robust.

On Adaptive Manual Control

Experimental studies and control descriptions of the human operator in recent years have extended the knowledge of adaptive behaviour in manual control from vague generalities about his versatility to quantitative descriptions. Considerable data have been gathered on the ability of the human to adapt to changes in input spectra, controlled element gain, polarity and dynamics, display modality, and the limits of controllability under a variety of situations. These results have indicated a greater adaptation versatility than expected from some earlier descriptions, but have also pointed out some of the restricted training conditions under which the rapid human adaptation may be expected to be demonstrated. When it comes to explaining how the human manages his remarkable adaptation abilities, less progress has been made. Improvements in the techniques for dynamic measurement of the adaptive process have been helpful in this regard but still fall short of what is required to observe the change in control law. Some appealing suggestions for detection models, model reference conitrol analogues and statistical decision theory pattern recognition algorithms have been put forth but are in no sense 'proven'. Primarily as a result of the measurement limitation and the lack of sufficient knowledge about adaptive control systems in general, the development of models for human adaptive control has been limited to general schema at this time.
