Dynamic optimisation occurs in a variety of real- world problems. To tackle these problems, evolutionary algorithms have been extensively used due to their effectiveness and minimum design effort. However, for dynamic problems, extra mechanisms are required on top of standard evolutionary algorithms. Among them, diversity mechanisms have proven to be competitive in handling dynamism, and recently, the use of neural networks have become popular for this purpose. Considering the complexity of using neural networks in the process compared to simple diversity mechanisms, we investigate whether they are competitive and the possibility of integrating them to improve the results. However, for a fair comparison, we need to consider the same time budget for each algorithm. Thus instead of the usual number of fitness evaluations as the measure for the available time between changes, we use wall clock timing. The results show the significance of the improvement when integrating the neural network and diversity mechanisms depends to the type and the frequency of changes. Moreover, we observe that for differential evolution, having a proper diversity in population when using neural network plays a key role in the neural network's ability to improve the results.

This paper presents a segmentation application based on change-detection techniques. The algorithm is able to deal with sequences having different amounts of motion by adjusting the number of frames to skip, to reduce the light drift by DC correction and dealing with noise in a locally adaptive manner. An adaptive truncation processing is used to remove background content as well as to discard the background noise to achieve a binary shape. Finally, a boundary smoothing method is used to improve the segmentation quality. The segmented algorithm can pass various sequences testing with acceptable error-ratio. While segmented algorithm applying on MPEG-4 based surveillance systems, the coding efficiency can be greatly promoted as compared to the conventional MPEG-2 coding. The algorithm uses low computational complexity to make it applicable to real-time surveillance systems using software implementation.

Sequence labeling is concerned with processing an input data sequence and producing an output sequence of discrete labels which characterize it. Common applications includes speech recognition, language processing (tagging, chunking) and bioinformatics. Many solutions have been proposed to partially cope with this problem. These include probabilistic models (HMMs, CRFs) and machine learning algorithm (SVM, Neural nets). In practice, the best results have been obtained by combining several of these methods. However, fusing different signal segmentation methods is not straightforward, particularly when integrating prior information. In this paper the sequence labeling problem is viewed as a multi objective optimization task. Each objective targets a different aspect of sequence labelling such as good classification, temporal stability and change detection. The resulting optimization problem turns out to be non convex and plagued with numerous local minima. A region growing algorithm is proposed as a method for finding a solution to this multi functional optimization task. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on both synthetic and real data (BCI dataset). Results are encouraging and better than those previously reported on these datasets.

In this paper we present a semi-automatic multi resolution video objects extraction and tracking algorithm well suited to scalable wavelet based object coding. Objects of interest are determined in the first frame through initial user intervention followed by a spatial segmentation algorithm. The specified objects are afterwards tracked in the subsequent frames. The tracking algorithm includes multiresolution Markov random field (MMRF) based spatial segmentation with emphasis on border smoothness in different resolutions and multi resolution backward partition projection. An intensity change detector indicates newly appeared objects/regions. The proposed method produces well defined and visually pleasing objects as well as allowing for larger motion tracking, better noise tolerance and less computational complexity.

Scheduling the nodes of wireless sensor network properly can effectively reduce the networks' energy consumption. The ordinary coverage algorithm is simply to identify redundant network nodes and let them go to sleep, without considering problem of power consumption of those continuing working nodes. This paper purpose a sleeping and wakening-up mechanism based on energy threshold setting, which can improve the nodes working efficiency by limit their energy consumption, balancing energy consumption of nodes, thus enhances the entire wireless sensor networks' life. The simulation results show that the sleep/wake-up mechanism based on energy threshold setting can be applied to wireless sensor networks very well with obvious energy-saving.

Complex systems involve the interaction between many processes that may or may not have causal relations to each other. In such systems, discovering causal relations can provide significant insights into the internals of the system and facilitate fault discovery and recovery procedures. In this paper, we provide a novel causality detection algorithm based on robust singular spectrum transform that combines features of autoregressive modeling and perturbation analysis. The proposed approach was evaluated using both synthetic and real data and was shown to provide superior performance to the standard linear Granger-causality test. It also provides a natural way to detect common causes that may give false positives in other causality tests.

Many real-world problems are dynamic and require an optimization algorithm that is able to continuously track a changing optimum over time. In this paper, a new multiagent algorithm for solving dynamic problems is studied. This algorithm, called MADO, is analyzed using the Moving Peaks Benchmark, and its performances are compared to those of competing dynamic optimization algorithms on several instances of this benchmark. The obtained results show the efficiency of MADO, even in multimodal environments.

Morphological change of ECG is the important diagnostic parameter to finding the malfunction of a heart. An abnormal ST segment change especially is a very important for finding myocardial ischemia. Long-term ECG recording is needed because an ST change is transient. Accordingly, physicians try to find the transient change of the ST segment. The aim of this study is to classify ST according to its shape type using a polynomial approximation method and the reference STs set. The developed algorithm consists of feature point detection, ST level detection and ST shape classification. The first step of feature point detection is the detection of QRS complex, and this is accomplished using the morphological characteristics of QRS complex such as the steep slope and high amplitude. The other feature points are also detected using their morphological characteristics. The developed algorithm detects the ST level change, and then classifies the ST shape type using the polynomial approximation. The algorithm finds the least squares curve for the data between S wave and T wave in ECG. This curve is used for the classification of the ST shapes. ST type is classified by comparing the slopes between the reference ST type and the least square curve. We applied the developed algorithm to the ECG data in European ST database. Through the result from the developed algorithm, we can know when the ST level change occurs and what the ST shape type is.

Demands for using different complexity level algorithms to deliver multimedia content delivery over portable devices are increasing thanks to advanced battery technology. This work describes a novel complexity aware motion estimation for H.264 based on pixel representation of different bit-depth and a simple scene change detection module. The experimental results show that with identical searching complexity, improvement on averaged PSNR is more than 0.2 dB for 4-bit representation and more than 2 dB for 1/2-bit representation as compared to the conventional bit-truncation method.

Proposes a magnetic measurement principle to develop a balance sensor. Basically, the sensor is composed of a spherical vessel sealing a certain amount of liquid, a mushroom-shaped float and a permanent magnet. The circular plated magnet is fixed on the root of the float stem. As the liquid moves in the vessel, the float changes the position of the magnet. And the Hall effect devices located around the vessel sense the change of balance with the aid of a signal processor. The density of the Hall effect devices and the algorithm for determining the direction of the resultant acceleration are considered. Also, the results of experiments for magnet's position and the angle of balance are shown. The proposed method is effective in detecting all directions of the resultant acceleration of motion and gravity with uniform resolution, since the sensor has no rotation axes.
