Active contours or snakes are widely used in object segmentation for their ability to integrate feature extraction and pixel candidate linking in a single energy minimizing process. But the sensitivity to parameters values and initialization is also a widely known problem. The performance of snakes can be enhanced by better initialization close to the desired solution. We present a fine mouth region of interest (ROI) extraction using gray level image and corresponding gradient information. We link this technique with an original snake method. The automatic snakes use spatially varying coefficients to remain along its evolution in a mouth-like shape. Our experimentations on a large image database prove its robustness regarding speakers change of the ROI mouth extraction and automatic snakes algorithms. The main application of our algorithms is video-conferencing.

We address issues related to the establishment of defender's reputation in anomaly detection against insider attacks. We consider two types of attackers: smart insiders, which learn from historic attacks and adapt their strategies to avoid detection/punishment, and naive attackers, which blindly launch their attacks. We introduce two novel reputation-establishment algorithms for systems with solely smart insiders and systems with both smart insiders and naive attackers, respectively. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that our reputation-establishment algorithms can significantly improve the performance of anomaly detection against insider attacks in terms of the tradeoff between detection and false positives.

A variable inductor based power flow control method is proposed to regulate the output voltage of a wireless power pick-up. The open circuit voltage variation of the power pick-up is compensated by controlling a magnetic amplifier type inductor in an LCL tuning configuration. The proposed control algorithm directly detects the output voltage of the power pick-up and feedbacks the voltage signal to update the tuning direction truth table discretely. According to the output voltage, the controller determines the direction of the equivalent inductance change of the magnetic amplifier. Both simulation and practical results demonstrated that the proposed control algorithm can effectively maintain the output voltage at a desired value after a short period of transient response. It has been found that the step-size of the variable inductor and sampling time are two key factors governing the control quality. These two parameters were selected based on the tolerance of the output voltage variation and the desired control speed.

As the increase of high definition video contents, video contents indexing has become more important. Thus, a suitable scene change detection method to Ultra High Definition (UHD) video contents is needed. We propose a new method using two layers that can detect the scene changed frames in a fast and accurate way. Also, we propose an algorithm that can be applied to the Next Generation codec HEVC. Through the experimental results, our proposed method will helps UHD video contents analysis and indexing.

In implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) heart rate can not discriminate lethal tachycardias from benign ones which lead to false therapy. The blood pressure (BP) waveform is the clue for classifying these varieties. The authors have designed and developed an automated online analysis of BP waveforms and propose a possible method to detect tachycardias by examining BP waveforms only. The associated tachycardia algorithm that discerns the change of stroke volume output of the heart identified unstable tachycardias with a rate of 90.5% (specificity) and 67.6% (sensitivity). Detected tachycardias exhibited irregularities in interval and magnitude of BP waveforms. However, for tachycardias which were not detected there were regular BP waveforms although the magnitude and rate were different from that of sinus rhythm. It is concluded that this feature can be the clue for discrimination of hemodynamically stable and unstable tachycardias.

Recent developments in nuclear reprogramming and intracytoplasmic sperm injection reflect an increasing need for more advanced and automatic micromanipulation technologies. In this paper, we present an automatic cell injection system, which is capable of visually monitoring the injecting process and controlling the microactuators. Traditionally, cell injection was manually operated. However, it was laborious, time consuming, of low accuracy, and prone to contamination due to the handling requirement. An automatic and efficient strategy is required to eliminate all these drawbacks. In our system, the whole injection process is monitored and controlled by software. The precision achieved is physically proven to be within a good tolerance range.

An aerospace vehicle may operate throughout a wide range of flight environmental conditions that affect its dynamic characteristics. Even when the control design incorporates a degree of robustness, system parameters may drift enough to cause its performance to degrade below an acceptable level. The object of this paper is to develop a change detection algorithm so that we can build a highly adaptive control system applicable to aircraft systems. The idea is to detect system changes with minimal time delay. The algorithm developed is called Minimal Time-change detection Algorithm (MT-CDA) which detects the instant of change as quickly as possible with false-alarm probability below a certain specified level. Simulation results for the aircraft lateral motion with a known or unknown change in control gain matrices, in the presence of doublet input, indicate that the algorithm works fairly well as theory indicates though there is a difficulty in deciding the exact amount of change in some situations. One of MT-CDA distinguishing properties is that detection delay of MT-CDA is superior to that of Whiteness Test.< >

This paper presents a power-aware dynamically reconfigurable rendering engine design, which changes power as rendering throughput and image quality change. At algorithm level, a precision-aware shading scheme is proposed to improve the power efficiency of the conventional shading algorithm through the combination of precision detection and fraction masking techniques. At architecture level, a processing element (PE) based scalable architecture is combined with dynamic task scheduling and dispatching techniques to raise hardware utilization rate and reduce computation latency. We present a novel mechanism for consensus building in sensor networks. The proposed algorithm has three main properties that make it suitable for general sensor-network learning. First, the proposed algorithm is based on robust nonparametric statistics and thereby needs little prior knowledge about the network and the function that needs to be estimated. Second, the algorithm uses only local information about the network and it communicates only with nearby sensors. Third, the algorithm is completely asynchronous and robust. It does not need to coordinate the sensors to estimate the underlying function and it is not affected if other sensors in the network stop working. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is an ideal candidate for sensor networks deployed in remote and inaccessible areas, which might need to change their objective once they have been set up.

At low bit-rate video communications, packet loss may easily cause whole-frame loss that, in return, leads to annoying frame drop phenomenon. In this paper, a novel error concealment algorithm is specifically developed for stereoscopic video, called the disparity-based frame difference projection (DFDP), to recover the lost frames at the decoder. The proposed DFDP contains three key components: 1) change detection; 2) disparity estimation; and 3) frame difference projection, which exploits both the intra-view frame difference from one view and interview correlation to estimate the lost frame in another view. The change region computed on the correctly received frame will be used to predict the change region between current missing frame and its previous frame through the estimated disparity, which is the summation of the estimated global disparity and the estimated local disparity. Experimental results have shown that the proposed stereoscopic video error concealment method can effectively restore the lost frames at the decoder and deliver attractive performance, in terms of objective measurement (in peak signal-to-noise ratio) and subjective visual quality.
