When fault occurs in power grid, a lot of alarms and records are generated in substations. These are secondary circuit signals, fault recorder and PMU data. Fault recorder data contains the details of fault evolution, which can be used for diagnosis fault occurrence time, circuit breaker operation events. It is crucial for power grid diagnosis and intelligent alarm functions. However, the analysis and utility of fault record data for diagnosis purpose require the operator's participate and is time consuming. In this paper we design a two stages fault diagnosis mode for future development of IEC61850 and digital substation. Based on this, we propose a hybrid algorithm to analyze fault recorder data with abrupt change detection which can obtain major events during a fault, including fault occurrence, circuit breaker operation time. We use a simulated example to prove correctness and efficiency of our proposed algorithm. The algorithm proposed in this paper can be used as intelligent alarm functions for future power grid fault diagnosis.

In video indexing, video scene transition detection is an essential step to segment the video. Current techniques used for scene change detection tend to suffer from a major limitation as most of them cannot identify scene transitions in the compressed domain. Since most videos are expected to be stored in the compressed domain, scene transition detection in this domain is highly desirable. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for real-time detection of abrupt scene transitions and fade-in/fade-out scene transitions using texture and macroblock (MB) information in the MPEG-4 compressed video. MPEG-4 video stream is partially decoded where texture and MB information are extracted. MB information is used to identity the abrupt scene transitions whereas MB information together with the texture difference between frames are used to identify the boundaries of fading transitions. The performance of the proposed algorithm is measured in terms of precision and recall values. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can identify fade and abrupt scene transitions with a mean recall and precision values equal to 80.76% and 85.71%, respectively.

We propose a video segmentation method using a histogram-based fuzzy c-means (HBFCM) clustering algorithm. This algorithm is a hybrid of two approaches and is composed of three phases: the feature extraction phase, the clustering phase, and the key-frame selection phase. In the first phase, differences between color histogram are extracted as features. In the second phase, the fuzzy c-means (FCM) is used to group features into three clusters: the shot change (SC) cluster, the suspected shot change (SSC) cluster, and the no shot change (NSC) cluster. In the last phase, shot change frames are identified from the SC and the SSC, and then used to segment video sequences into shots. Finally, key frames are selected from each shot. Simulation results indicate that the HBFCM clustering algorithm is robust and applicable to various types of video sequences.

The method for developing a soil moisture inversion algorithm can be approached in two ways: the multiple-incident angle approach and the change detection method. The paper discusses how these two methods can be used to predict surface soil moisture. In the multiple incident angle approach surface roughness can be mapped, if multiple incident angle viewing is possible, and if the surface roughness is assumed constant during data acquisitions. A backpropagation neural network is trained with the data set generated by the IEM (Integral Equation Method) model. The training data set includes possible combinations of backscatter as a result of variation in soil moisture within the period of data acquisitions, and the inputs to the network are backscatter acquired at different incident angles. The outputs are correlation length and r.m.s. height. Once the roughness is mapped, soil moisture can be determined. The next approach is the application of the change detection concept. In this approach, the change in soil moisture over two different periods is determined from Radarsat data using a simplified algorithm. The methods would be applied to Radarsat data acquired over Ames, Iowa during the period June-July 2002.

The problem of detecting changes in wind speed and direction is considered. Bayesian priors, with various degrees of certainty, are used to represent relationships between the two time series. Segmentation is then conducted using a hierarchical Bayesian model that accounts for correlations between the wind speed and direction. A Gibbs sampling strategy overcomes the computational complexity of the hierarchical model and is used to estimate the unknown parameters and hyperparameters. The performance of the proposed algorithm is illustrated with results obtained with synthetic data.

There is an emerging need for the traffic processing capability of network security mechanisms, such as intrusion detection systems (IDS), to match the high throughput of today's high-bandwidth networks. Recent research has shown that the vast majority of security solutions deployed today are inadequate for processing traffic at a sufficiently high rate to keep pace with the network's bandwidth. To alleviate this problem, packet sampling schemes at the front end of network monitoring systems (such as an IDS) have been proposed. However, existing sampling algorithms are poorly suited for this task especially because they are unable to adapt to the trends in network traffic. Satisfying such a criterion requires a sampling algorithm to be capable of controlling its sampling rate to provide sufficient accuracy at minimal overhead. To meet this Utopian goal, adaptive sampling algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, we put forth an adaptive sampling algorithm based on weighted least squares prediction. The proposed sampling algorithm is tailored to enhance the capability of network based IDS at detecting denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Not only does the algorithm adaptively reduce the volume of data that would be analyzed by an IDS, but it also maintains the intrinsic self-similar characteristic of network traffic. The latter characteristic of the algorithm can be used by an IDS to detect DoS attacks by using the fact that a change in the self-similarity of network traffic is a known indicator of a DoS attack.

A key function for network traffic monitoring and analysis is the ability to perform aggregate queries over multiple data streams. change detection is an important primitive which can be extended to construct many aggregate queries. The recently proposed sketches (Krishnamurthy, 2003) are among the very few that can detect heavy changes online for high speed links, and thus support various aggregate queries in both temporal and spatial domains. However, it does not preserve the keys (e.g., source IP address) of flows, making it difficult to reconstruct the desired set of anomalous keys. In an earlier abstract we proposed a framework for a reversible sketch data structure that offers hope for efficient extraction of keys (Schweller, 2004). However, this scheme is only able to detect a single heavy change key and places restrictions on the statistical properties of the key space. To address these challenges, we propose an efficient reverse hashing scheme to infer the keys of culprit flows from reversible sketches. There are two phases. The first operates online, recording the packet stream in a compact representation with negligible extra memory and few extra memory accesses. Our prototype single FPGA board implementation can achieve a throughput of over 16 Gbps for 40-byte-packet streams (the worst case). The second phase identifies heavy changes and their keys from the representation in nearly real time. We evaluate our scheme using traces from large edge routers with OC-12 or higher links. Both the analytical and experimental results show that we are able to achieve online traffic monitoring and accurate change/intrusion detection over massive data streams on high speed links, all in a manner that scales to large key space size. To the best of our knowledge, our system is the first to achieve these properties simultaneously.

Here we propose a new technique for the Watermarking to withstand the geometric attacks, which may occur during the transmission of the watermarked image. The underlying system was based on Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA). The algorithm for the normalization had been formulated for use in black and white images. The watermark was spreaded across the carrier image by using the pseudo-random noise sequences of optimal period and retrieval was made by the use of correlation. Private Key technique is used so the transmission is very secure. Matlab was used to implement the algorithm discussed here.

This paper presents an image processing-based approach for the assessment of living cell apoptosis. The approach uses deformable models in tracing the changes in cell shapes in accordance to possible apoptotic cell death. Stochastic controlled energy function is used to drive the evolution of the deformable model. As an application for the proposed approach, it is applied for detecting the morphological changes in exercise-induced immune cells during their apoptosis. The approach is used with the goal of automating the assessment of cell apoptosis. The proposed approach shows promising results in detecting these morphological changes.

This study discusses an algorithm to extract of game record from TV Baduk program. Firstly, the board region of Baduk game is need to be normalized, and the black or white stones and the lines in the Baduk board are detected to get a so-called key frame. After that, the record of game can be extracted by analyzing the change pattern between the consecutive key frames. The proposed algorithm is very useful to greatly reduce the amount of memory to store a Baduk game and to realize the interactive functionality
