In real world applications ageing effects, process drifts, soft and hard faults may affect the data generation mechanism and, as a consequence, data coming from it. Intelligent measurement systems developed for such processes (e.g., industrial quality assessment and control, environmental monitoring) require adaptive techniques which, by tracking the system evolution, allow the intelligent system for keeping acceptable performance. Here we focus on adaptive classifiers embedded in intelligent measurement systems designed to cope with non-stationary environments, yet well performing in stationary conditions. The novelty of the approach resides in the possibility to update in a just-in-time fashion, i.e., only when it is really needed, the knowledge base of the classifier. A large experimental campaign shows the effectiveness of the proposed design.

In a real-time video with surveillance embedded system, it is a hot research on an effective motion detection algorithm. In this paper, we bring forward a detected motion algorithm which is based on a 16 channels video card alarming system. This algorithm enhances the effectiveness obviously without losing the precision. By using the background shadowing algorithm, it can decrease much computation time of CPU when the background changes quickly; by using the self-adaptive algorithm for selecting the threshold, it can wipe off complex computation in the complex mathematical models, so it also can reduce the burden of CPU; the algorithm adapt to many requirements in different places and different sensitiveness. The result of experiments shows that our method can reduce the burden of computers effectively and get a better threshold compared with other methods.

This study focuses on improving the available scene change detection methods developed for bit streams compressed with the latest coding standard H.264/AVC. Two algorithms that form the basis of our study are introduced and compared. Then, a method based on the combination of the two methods is proposed together with some improvements. Experimental studies show the proposed method is superior to others.

The paper deals with robust video segmentation using a hierarchical model. This region based method is designed by human sense. Color and size in our model are two main factors, anything with obvious size and color is easily noticed. The hierarchical model works by examining both spatial and temporal features using a parameter set. The parameter set controls the feature's quality and noise. We chose a multiscale morphology based algorithm for spatial domain feature extraction and a change detection based algorithm for temporal domain feature extraction due to its noise robustness in our framework. Thus, our framework does not need smoothing as preprocessing. Results are shown as subjective views and errors are evaluated. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm works well in most sequences.

Link based ranking algorithms have been adopted by most search engines in ranking the importance of Web pages. As a majority of Web accesses are through the use of search engines, Web spammers have taken advantage of the vulnerability of link based ranking algorithms by creating many artificial references or links in order to acquire higher-than-deserved ranking in search engines' results which will generate higher traffic to their websites. Link farm spam refers to the technique used to create a network of heavy linked Web pages for this purpose. In this paper, an algorithm using multi-level link structure analysis technique is proposed for detecting link farm spam pages. This algorithm is an enhancement to seed and parental penalty algorithms proposed by Wu and Davison, 2005

Synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) bottom mapping sensors are on the verge of entering operational use. Here we examine the utility of both the low and high frequency output of SAS systems recorded from trials to determine their utility in the automatic contact generation scheme described in the companion paper "Automated change detection using Synthetic Aperture Sonar Imagery " [1]. The survey area covered by the trial has contacts called separately by the high and low frequency SAS output. The results are compared with a manual survey of the data to determine accuracy. The two frequency results are also compared by processing time. The data are then used to determine how merging the two outputs may yield an improved contact calling algorithm.

Window based network flow control protocols, such as TCP, modulate the number of unacknowledged packets the protocol is allowed to have outstanding. Such protocols change the size when they receive positive or negative acknowledgements, where the latter kind may be inferred from timeouts. Together with a communications channel that loses packets at random, such a protocol induces a stochastic process on the window size. We consider a broad class of window based protocols, and analyze various statistics of the induced stochastic process. We demonstrate that all these protocols can be treated analytically using the theory of semi-Markov processes.

In this paper, a system called PixSO (pixel-level comparison, segmentation and object tracking) is presented for effective shot change detection using an unsupervised object segmentation algorithm and the technique of object tracking based on the segmentation mask maps. The detection method was tested on TV news, commercial, sports and documentary video sequences which contain different types of shots having different object and camera motions. The results have shown that the PixSO system can not only produce accurate shot change detection, but also obtain object level information of the video frames, which is very useful for video content indexing and analysis in multimedia databases.

In the context of outdoor video surveillance, this paper attempts to answer the following question: how to combine LWIR and color information in order to optimize foreground / background segmentation accuracy. Starting from an improved state-of-the-art color-based approach, we integrated thermal information into the algorithm with a pixel-level analytical fusion technique. Considering that very few public thermal / color video databases are available, we built our own acquisition platforms to grab numerous co-registered LWIR / color videos in a variety of outdoor conditions. We manually generated the pixel-based ground-truth for a representative selection of these sequences and performed a quantitative performance analysis. We demonstrated, among others, that the combination of thermal and color information proposed outperformed the use of a single spectral band in all tested visibility conditions.
