A real-time adaptive non-parametric thresholding algorithm for change detection is proposed in this paper. Based on the estimation of the scatter of regions of change in a difference image, a threshold of each image block is computed discriminatively, then the global threshold is obtained by averaging all the thresholds for image blocks. The block threshold is calculated differently for regions of change and background. Experimental results show the proposed thresholding algorithm performs well for change detection with high efficiency.

We present a fast and statistically principled approach for land cover change detection. The approach is illustrated with a geographic application that involves analyzing remotely sensed data to detect changes in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in near real time. We use the Wal-Mart land cover change data set as a nontraditional way to monitor and validate known cases of NDVI change. A reference distribution has been justified to fit the available data. An adaptive metric based on the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) of normal scores derived from p-values is tracked for new or streaming data, leading to alarms for large or sustained changes. A heuristic algorithm based on the property of the metric is proposed for change point detection. The proposed framework performed well on the validation dataset

In this paper, an efficient moving object segmentation algorithm in the wavelet domain is proposed using three successive frames. The change detection method, which employs fuzzy C-means clustering technique to classify motion features of four wavelet sub-bands, is used twice to separate significant change pixels in the wavelet domain from the background. After applying the intersect operation, the change detection masks are obtained in wavelet domain. Finally, further object shape information and accurate extraction of the moving object is obtained in original resolution according to current object edge map. The experimental results demonstrate the algorithm effective

This paper proposes an efficient video object segmentation algorithm based on change detection and background updating that can quickly extract the moving object from video sequence. Firstly, the change detection is used to analyze temporal information between successive frames to obtain the change region. Then, the combination of frame difference mask and background subtraction mask is adopted to acquire the initial object mask and further solve the uncovered background problem and still object problem. Moreover, the boundary refinement is introduced to overcome the shadow influence and residual background problem. Finally, objective evaluations of the proposed algorithm demonstrate that the spatial accuracy can be maintained above 95% for most normal cases.

We present a novel framework for detecting urban changes from a pair of very high resolution (VHR) satellite images such as those taken by satellite Quickbird-II or IKONOS. Image differences due to variations of imaging conditions such as view angle and illumination are distinguished from significant urban changes in the scene. First, we adopt a new image registration method, which makes several useful geometrical constraints available. Then we find changed line segments over time. After that we match scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) points and generate corresponding regions in order to exclude changed line segments due to parallax. We perform shadow detection to exclude changed line segments due to shadow change. Finally we group the remaining changed line segments into clusters, among which the significant ones form the changed regions as output. Our experiments with real Quickbird-II images show that the proposed method can well detect significant urban changes

With the tendencies of "3-High" for RS images (high spatial resolution, high spectral resolution and high temporal resolution), more attentions are paid to the information processing technique for high-resolution image data. However, the performances of current high spatial resolution RS change detection methods and systems are not satisfying in both effect and efficiency. A new unified approach is presented that integrates SVM based classifier to change detection (SVMCCD). Combined with the change detection task, a bootstrapping strategy is proposed to solve sample selection problem. Considering the relative simplicity of non-change patterns, one- class SVM based change detection method is also provided.

This paper addresses unsupervised speaker change detection, a necessary step for several indexing tasks. We assume that there is no prior knowledge cither on the number of speakers or their identities. Features included in the MPEG-7 Audio Prototype are investigated such as the Audio Wave form Envelope and the Audio Spectrum Centroid. The model selection criterion is the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). A multiple pass algorithm is proposed. It uses a dynamic thresholding for scalar features and a fusion scheme so as to refine the segmentation results. It also models every speaker by a multivariate Gaussian probability density function and whenever new information is available, the respective model is updated. The experiments are carried out on a dataset created by concatenating speakers from the TIMIT database, that is referred to as the TIMIT data set. It is and demonstrated that the performance of the proposed multiple pass algorithm is better than that of other approaches.

There is an emerging need for the traffic processing capability of network security mechanisms, such as intrusion detection systems (IDS), to match the high throughput of today's high-bandwidth networks. Recent research has shown that the vast majority of security solutions deployed today are inadequate for processing traffic at a sufficiently high rate to keep pace with the network's bandwidth. To alleviate this problem, packet sampling schemes at the front end of network monitoring systems (such as an IDS) have been proposed. However, existing sampling algorithms are poorly suited for this task especially because they are unable to adapt to the trends in network traffic. Satisfying such a criterion requires a sampling algorithm to be capable of controlling its sampling rate to provide sufficient accuracy at minimal overhead. To meet this Utopian goal, adaptive sampling algorithms have been proposed. In this paper, we put forth an adaptive sampling algorithm based on weighted least squares prediction. The proposed sampling algorithm is tailored to enhance the capability of network based IDS at detecting denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Not only does the algorithm adaptively reduce the volume of data that would be analyzed by an IDS, but it also maintains the intrinsic self-similar characteristic of network traffic. The latter characteristic of the algorithm can be used by an IDS to detect DoS attacks by using the fact that a change in the self-similarity of network traffic is a known indicator of a DoS attack.

A key function for network traffic monitoring and analysis is the ability to perform aggregate queries over multiple data streams. change detection is an important primitive which can be extended to construct many aggregate queries. The recently proposed sketches (Krishnamurthy, 2003) are among the very few that can detect heavy changes online for high speed links, and thus support various aggregate queries in both temporal and spatial domains. However, it does not preserve the keys (e.g., source IP address) of flows, making it difficult to reconstruct the desired set of anomalous keys. In an earlier abstract we proposed a framework for a reversible sketch data structure that offers hope for efficient extraction of keys (Schweller, 2004). However, this scheme is only able to detect a single heavy change key and places restrictions on the statistical properties of the key space. To address these challenges, we propose an efficient reverse hashing scheme to infer the keys of culprit flows from reversible sketches. There are two phases. The first operates online, recording the packet stream in a compact representation with negligible extra memory and few extra memory accesses. Our prototype single FPGA board implementation can achieve a throughput of over 16 Gbps for 40-byte-packet streams (the worst case). The second phase identifies heavy changes and their keys from the representation in nearly real time. We evaluate our scheme using traces from large edge routers with OC-12 or higher links. Both the analytical and experimental results show that we are able to achieve online traffic monitoring and accurate change/intrusion detection over massive data streams on high speed links, all in a manner that scales to large key space size. To the best of our knowledge, our system is the first to achieve these properties simultaneously.
