The popularity of Wi-Fi-enabled devices alongside the growing demand for non-licensed spectrum, has made the WiFi networks exceedingly congested. This endangers the efficiency of Wi-Fi and negatively affect the users' experience. The problem is especially pressing in dense areas (e.g. shopping centers) where Wi-Fi channel assignment is more likely to be uncoordinated and the working environment of Wi-Fi Access Points (APs) has become increasingly time-variant. As a result, the availability of SoftwareDefined Networking (SDN) and network virtualization technologies has motivated the use of centralized resource management as a solution. This paper provides an algorithm for channel assignment functionality in the context of SDN-based centralized resource management, which captures the live status of a Wi-Fi network and is capable of optimising the Radio Frequency (RF) channel assignment process. The APs' network arrangement, the current assignment of the channels and the characteristics of the RF channels in IEEE 802.11 have all been taken into account in the proposed model. The performance of the proposed model in terms of the level of the interference, the spectral efficiency at each AP and the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) at the user-side is evaluated through simulation and compared against state of the art solutions.

Nowadays,wireless local area network(WLAN)has become prevalent Internet access due to its low-cost gadgets,flexible coverage and hasslefree simple wireless *** facilitates wireless Internet services to users with mobile devices like smart phones,tablets,and laptops through deployment of multiple access points(APs)in a network *** AP operates on a frequency band called *** wireless standard such as IEEE 802.11n has a limited number of channels where frequency spectrum of adjacent channels overlaps partially with each *** a crowded environment,users may experience poor Internet services due to channel collision i.e.,interference from surrounding APs that affects the performance of the WLAN ***,it becomes a challenge to maintain expected performance in a crowded environment.A mathematical model of throughput considering interferences from surrounding APs can play an important role to set up a WLAN system *** set up,assignment of channels considering interference can maximize network *** this paper,we investigate the signal propagation of APs under interference of partially overlapping channels for both bonded and non-bonded ***,a throughput estimation model is proposed using difference of operating channels and received signal strength indicator(RSSI).Then,a channel assignment algorithm is introduced using proposed throughput estimation ***,the efficiency of the proposal is verified by numerical experiments using *** results show that the proposal selects the best channel combination of bonded and non-bonded channels that maximize the performance.

Blockchain-Empowered Dynamic Spectrum Management for Space-Air-Ground Integrated Network

Space-air-ground integrated network is capable of providing seamless and ubiquitous services to cater for the increasing wireless communication demands of emerging applications. However, how to efficiently manage the heterogeneous resources and protect the privacy of connected devices is a very challenging issue, especially under the highly dynamic network topology and multiple trustless network operators. In this paper, we investigate blockchain-empowered dynamic spectrum management by reaping the advantages of blockchain and software defined network(SDN), where operators are incentive to share their resources in a common resourced pool. We first propose a blockchain enabled spectrum management framework for space-air-ground integrated network, with inter-slice spectrum sharing and intra-slice spectrum allocation. Specifically, the inter-slice spectrum sharing is realized through a consortium blockchain formed by the upper-tier SDN controllers, and then a graph coloring based channel assignment algorithm is proposed to manage the intra-slice spectrum assignment. A bilateral confirmation protocol and a consensus mechanism are also proposed for the consortium blockchain. The simulation results prove that our proposed consensus algorithm takes less time than practical Byzantine fault tolerance algorithm to reach a consensus, and the proposed channel assignment algorithm significantly improves the spectrum utilization and outperforms the baseline algorithm in both simulation and real-world scenarios.

A delay-constrained and priority-aware channel assignment algorithm for efficient multicast in wireless mesh networks

Many popular applications of wireless mesh networks (WMNs) depend on delay-constraint multicast communication. To support such multicast communication, this paper proposes a distributed and polynomial-time heuristic channel assignment algorithm for WMNs. The proposed algorithm considers that the multicast session requests arrive dynamically and have different priorities. When a delay-constrained multicast session is issued, the multicast tree corresponding to the session is first established. The proposed algorithm divides the path delay constraint of the multicast tree into a number of the node-based delay constraints. This algorithm also devises multiple channel selection criteria to exploit all available channels of the WMN. Using these selection criteria, each node on the multicast tree can select the best channel to meet its node delay constraint and minimize the total interference for all existing multicast sessions. In the interference minimization, the priority factor is taken into account to prevent high-priority multicast sessions from incurring more interference than low-priority multicast sessions. Finally, this paper performs simulations to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed heuristic channel assignment algorithm through comparison with the optimal solution. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. The wireless mesh networks (WMN) has attracted significant interests as a next-generation broadband wireless network to provide ubiquitous wireless access for broadband services. Especially with incorporating multiple orthogonal channels and multiple directional antennas into the WMN, each node can communicate with its neighbor nodes simultaneously without interference between them. In addition, due to directional antennas, the interference range of each transmission can be significantly reduced and we can further utilize the frequency separation. Hence, we can improve the throughput of the WMN significantly with multiple orthogonal channels and multiple directional antennas. In this paper, we study a joint channel and flow assignment problem for the WMN with multiple channels and multiple directional antennas. We first formulate an optimization problem as a mixed integer optimization problem that aims at maximizing the network utility. Since it is inherently hard to solve the mixed integer optimization problem, we propose a heuristic algorithm to solve the problem. The simulation results show our heuristic algorithm provides a reasonable performance in terms of the network utility compared to its upper bound.

In cognitive radio networks, dynamic spectrum access allows an unlicensed (secondary) user to use the frequency bands that are statically allocated to licensed (primary) users under condition of causing no harm to the primary transmission. For the process of the dynamic spectrum access to succeed, spectrum sensing becomes of great importance for the secondary user (SU) to capture the under-utilized frequency bands. This process must be as fast as possible to enable elliclent spectrum utilization by the SU. In order to decrease the sensing time especially for wide band spectrum while keeping acceptable sensing accuracy, it is recommended to distribute this sensing task across the SUs in a way that leads to reduction of the probability of misdetection and the probability of false alarm. This work presents a channel assignment scheme for cooperative spectrum sensing in cognitive radio networks. Based on the individual statistically calculated-probability of error of each SU over all channels, the algorithm assigns the best k adjacent channels for each SU to decrease the probability of misdetection and the probability of false alarm. It is shown by MATLAB simulations that the presented scheme is able to reach acceptable sensing probability of error in terms of reduced sensing delay when compared to full spectrum sensing where all nodes cooperate to sense all channels (no assignment takes place). Additionally, It Is shown that the overall energy consumption of the cognitive radio network is reduced resulting in better network lifetime.

Owing to its spectral efficiency, bidirectional relaying is a promising candidate for information exchange in multiple-user cooperative networks. When the network is limited by resource constraints, amplify-and-forward (AaF) relay protocol is often the choice due to its simplicity and ease of use. Power allocation for AaF protocol has been extensively studied in unidirectional relay networks but how it can be implemented in two-way multiple-relay multiple-user networks has yet to be addressed. In this paper, we consider the adaptive power allocation in bidirectional AaF multiple-relay multiple-user networks. We show that when the multiple-user interference can be removed by a robust channel assignment algorithm, power allocation by maximizing the instantaneous sum rate or minimizing the symbol error rate can be suitably casted as a geometric programming (GP) problem. Simulation results show adaptive power allocation by GP outperforms that of equal power allocation scheme particularly when there is a single serving relay, and the gain can be as substantial when there are multiple serving relays.

Single-radio mesh routers operating on a single channel suffer from low throughput due to collisions. Equipping mesh routers with multiple radios operating on non-overlapping channels can significantly improve the throughput. However, the assignment of channels to radios in a multi-radio mesh network is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a channel assignment algorithm, TICA (Topology-controlled Interference-aware channel-assignment algorithm), which significantly improves network throughput by minimizing interference within the mesh network using a novel approach of controlling the network topology based on power control before intelligently assigning the channels to the multi-radio mesh routers, as well as guaranteeing network connectivity.

We provide a simple and accurate analytical model for multi-cell IEEE 802.11 WLANs. Our model applies if the cell radius, R, is much smaller than the carrier sensing range, R-cs We argue that, the condition R-cs >> R is likely to hold in a dense deployment of Access Points (APs). We develop a scalable cell level model for such WLANs with saturated nodes as well as for TCP-controlled long file downloads. The accuracy of our model is demonstrated by comparison with ns-2 simulations. Based on the insights provided by our analytical model, we propose a simple channel assignment algorithm which provides static assignments that are Nash equilibria in pure strategies for the objective of maximizing normalized network throughput, and requires only as many steps as there are channels. Furthermore, our channel assignment algorithm does not require any a priori knowledge of topology and can be implemented in a decentralized manner. In contrast to prior work, our approach to channel assignment is based on the throughput metric.
