Many real-world decision-making problems fall into the general category of classification. algorithms for constructing knowledge by inductive inference from example have been widely used for some decades. Although these learning algorithms frequently address the same problem of learning from preclassified examples and much previous work in inductive learning has focused on the algorithms' predictive accuracy, little attention has been paid to the effect of data factors on the performance of a learning system. An experiment was conducted using five learning algorithms on two data sets to investigate how the change in labeling the class attribute can alter the behavior of learning algorithms. The results show that different preclassification rules applied on the training examples can affect either the classification accuracy or classification structure.

In this paper an algorithm for automatic classification of land surfaces from multifrequency polarimetric SAR data is presented. Discriminations among different classes of agricultural land surfaces have been carried out on the basis of calibrated backscattering coefficients measured for each field. Nine classes of agricultural surfaces have been identified with a very low error rate.

This paper presents a test of the automatic identification of photomicrographs of rocks in thin sections using digital image processing and texture analysis. Three sets of textural measures derived respectively from the cooccurrence matrix, texture space, and texture spectrum have been used to identify six rock types (mylonite, diorite porphyry, diorite, gabbro, granite, and peridotite). Exploring only the texture characteristics of images, the average correct recognition rate reaches 89% for 58 photographs belonging to the sir types. The results also show the importance of using those more discriminating texture features in the classification algorithm. For the present study, the average rate of correct classification ranges from 46% to 89% depending on the set of texture measures used. The features extracted from the texture spectrum have more discriminating performance than the conventionally used Haralick measures derived from the cooccurrence matrix.

This paper presents a polynomial time algorithm for the construction and training of a class of multilayer perceptrons for classification. It uses linear programming models to incrementally generate the hidden layer in a restricted higher-order perceptron. Polynomial time complexity of the method is proven. Computational results are provided for several well-known applications in the areas of speech recognition, medical diagnosis, and target detection. In all cases, very small nets were created that had error rates similar to those reported so far.
