High-quality code enables sustainable software development, which is a prerequisite of a healthy digital society. To train software engineers to write higher-quality code, we developed an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) grounded in recent advances in ITS design. Its hallmark feature is the refactoring challenge subsystem, which enables engineers to develop procedural knowledge for analyzing code quality and improving it through refactoring. We conducted a focus group discussion with five working software engineers to get feedback for our system. We further conducted a controlled experiment with 51 software engineering learners, where we compared learning outcomes from using our ITS with educational pages offered by a learning management system. We examined the correctness of knowledge, level of knowledge retention after one week, and the learners' perceived engagement. We found no statistically significant difference between the two groups, establishing that our system does not lead to worse learning outcomes. Additionally, instructors can analyze challenge submissions to identify common incorrect coding patterns and unexpected correct solutions to improve the challenges and related hints. We discuss how our instructors benefited from the challenge subsystem, shed light on the need for a specialized ITS design grounded in contemporary theory, and examine the broader educational potential.

Agility in software development means being able to adapt to ever-changing requirements. A major factor in agility is keeping the codebase easy to read and to extend. This kind of code is commonly called "clean code". clean code is simple, elegant, and does not repeat itself. Writing clean code means that the cost of adding, changing, and removing features is kept to a minimum. It front-loads more of the work into the design stages of development, where it is cheaper both financially as well as mentally. This thesis describes some of the main principles of clean code and shows how they can be used in analyzing game code. The game under scrutiny is The Last Cube, a large-scale puzzle game project in which the author is the lead programmer. The game has been in development in the Unity game engine over 3 years. Parts of the code of The Last Cube are described and then analyzed using various methods and tools. The analysis of the code revealed hundreds of major violations of the clean code principles listed in the thesis, including problems with coupling, complexity, and duplication. The problems are analyzed and discussed. One instance of coupling is taken under closer scrutiny and analyzed further. The section is then refactored, improving the section’s maintainability and reducing coupling.

Context: Writing code that is understandable by other collaborators has become crucial to enhancing collaboration and productivity. clean code has become one of the most relevant software craftsmanship practices and has been widely embraced as a synonym for code quality by software developers and software development organizations all over the world. However, very little is known regarding whether developers agree with clean code principles and how they apply them in practice. Objectives: In this work, we investigated how developers perceive clean code principles, whether they believe that helps reading, understanding, reusing, and modifying clean code, and how they keep their code clean. Methods: We conducted a Systematic Literature Review in which we screened 771 research papers to collect clean code principles and a survey among 39 practitioners, some of them with more than 20 years of development experience. Results: So far, the results show a shared agreement with clean code principles and their potential benefits. They also show that developers tend to write "messy" code to be refactored later.

code quality is important for maintainability and sustainability of software systems, and is addressed by guidelines and peer reviews. There are well-defined methods and standards for code quality for example the clean code approach [1], and they are integrated with current software development process models such as SCRUM. However, developers have to be encouraged to invest effort due to the trade-off between software quality measures and projects' time pressure. Unfortunately, there are no proven hypotheses about the reasons for missing acceptance of such methods and standards by developers. To investigate hindering aspects for code quality acceptance in practice, empirical studies might help to determine the root problems and to establish solutions. However, there is a lack of empirical studies concerning this topic. Therefore, we performed an empirical study with practitioners to investigate problems and challenges while enforcing clean code. Semi-structured interviews were used to consult experienced practitioners from different companies and backgrounds. The transcripts were analyzed with open coding. The results showed that a lack of even one of the people-related aspects such as motivation, knowledge, experience and code quality awareness, hinders the enforcement of code quality. Surprisingly, tools might establish hindering factors due to high initial effort. As conclusions we propose implications for academic research, organization, practitioners and tool providers.

Can clean New code Reduce Technical Debt Density?

While technical debt grows in absolute numbers as software systems evolve over time, the density of technical debt (technical debt divided by lines of code) is reduced in some cases. This can be explained by either the application of refactorings or the development of new artifacts with limited Technical Debt. In this paper we explore the second explanation, by investigating the relation between the amount of Technical Debt in new code and the evolution of Technical Debt in the system. To this end, we compare the Technical Debt Density of new code with existing code, and we investigate which of the three major types of code changes (additions, deletions and modifications) is primarily responsible for changes in the evolution of Technical Debt density. Furthermore, we study whether there is a relation between code quality practices and the 'cleanness' of new code. To obtain the required data, we have performed a large-scale case study on twenty-seven open-source software projects by the Apache Software Foundation, analyzing 66,661 classes and 56,890 commits. The results suggest that writing "clean" (or at least "cleaner") new code can be an efficient strategy for reducing Technical Debt Density, and thus preventing software decay over time. The findings also suggest that projects adopting an explicit policy for quality improvement, e.g., through discussions on code quality in board meetings, are associated with a higher frequency of cleaner new code commits. Therefore, we champion the establishment of processes that monitor the density of Technical Debt of new code to control the accumulation of Technical Debt in a software system.

Software engineers are tasked with writing functionally correct code of high quality. Maintainability is a crucial code quality attribute that determines the ease of analyzing, modifying, reusing, and testing a software component. This quality attribute significantly affects the software's lifetime cost, contributing to developer productivity and other quality attributes. Consequently, academia and industry emphasize the need to train software engineers to build maintainable software code. Unfortunately, code maintainability is an ill-defined domain and is challenging to teach and learn. This problem is aggravated by a rising number of software engineering students and a lack of capable instructors. Existing instructors rely on scalable one-size-fits-all teaching methods that are ineffective. Advances in e-learning technologies can alleviate these issues. Our primary contribution is the design of a novel assessment item type, the maintainability challenge. It integrates into the standard intelligent tutoring system (ITS) architecture to develop skills for analyzing and refactoring high-level code maintainability issues. Our secondary contributions include the code maintainability knowledge component model and the implementation of an ITS that supports the maintainability challenge for the C# programming language. We designed, developed, and evaluated the ITS over two years of working with undergraduate students using a mixed-method approach anchored in design science. The empirical evaluations culminated with a field study with 59 undergraduate students. We report on the evaluation results that showcase the utility of our contributions. Our contributions support software engineering instructors in developing the code maintainability skills of their students at scale.

Research on global competencies of computing students suggests that next to technical programming knowledge, the teaching of non-technical skills such as creativity is becoming very relevant. Many CS1 courses introduce a layer of creative freedom by employing open project assignments. We are interested in the quality of the submitted projects in relation to the creativity that students show when tackling these open assignments. We have analyzed 110 projects from two academic years to investigate whether there is a relation between creativity and clean code in CS1 student projects. Seven judges were recruited that evaluated the creativity based on Amabile's Consensual Assessment Technique, while the PMD tool was used to explore code quality issues in the Java projects. Results indicate that the more projects are deemed as creative, the more likely code quality issues arise in these projects, and thus the less clean the code will be. We argue that next to promoting creativity in order to solve programming problems, the necessary attention should also be given to the clean code principles.

The problem of developing software quality is developer's experience which has different style and does not care about coding with principle that causes error or even bad smell. To reduce the risk of causing bad smell, the developer should concern with a good design principle and coding well. In addition, knowing the qualification and the characteristic of code is also important to promptly support verifying, recovering bad smell and improving them to be a good code. This research presents an approach for source code classification using software metrics and fuzzy logic to improve code quality with refactoring techniques. Our approach composed of 3 main sections;Source code definition with metrics and evaluation to classify source code type, Source code classification with fuzzy logic and Source code improvement with refactoring. The result of our approach is able to classify source code in type correctly and improve had smell, ambiguous code to be a clean code.

In this paper, we show the successful integration of measurement of code quality into a software development process. Besides choosing a suitable tool for code analysis, metrics, and proper threshold values, concepts for removal of deficiencies are important requirements for code quality. Several cycles of a development process are necessary to achieve a long-term and effective integration of code quality into the development process. The integration of static analysis and refactoring of program code is achieved by Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and didactic methods in a software development course at the university.

codeSmellExplorer is an interactive exploration and learning tool for code smells and associated refactorings, used on a tabletop. The evaluation of our University course about good coding practices shows that undergraduate students frequently fail to recognize bad coding practices without prior training. However, the results also confirmed that gamification elements, such as coding challenges, are regarded as interesting and stimulating. codeSmellExplorer is an attempt to familiarize users with good coding practices by visualizing an interactive graph network of code smells and connected refactorings. Users can explore those relationships or start challenges with built-in feedback systems.
