A new arrangement of Z-source AC-AC converter and its closed-loop control system

In this study, a Z-source alternating current-to-alternating current (AC-AC) converter with a specific topology, which can provide both buck and boost modes, is investigated. This converter, which can be implemented easily, utilizes only two switches with complemented commands. A comparison between the Z-source AC-AC converter and a conventional thyristor voltage controlled one is presented here, and it shows that in the most areas, the Z-source converter provides a faster response and lower total harmonic distortion of the output currents than the conventional one. Moreover, the Z-source converter is also extended to the multiphase systems. In addition, a new arrangement of this converter is proposed here to remove the isolated single-phase sources. Furthermore, an open-loop method is proposed for soft-starting applications. Finally, a closed-loop control system is also suggested for a three-phase Z-source converter to soft start and control the speed of an induction motor. Computer simulations show the validity and effectiveness of the proposed schemes. Copyright (c) 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Active power compensation method for single-phase current source rectifier without extra active switches

The existing active power decoupling methods for single-phase current source rectifiers (SCSRs) usually involve a lot of additional semiconductor devices or energy storage units, which is adverse to cost and efficiency. This study proposes an active power decoupling method to buffer the double-frequency ripple power. The main circuit is configured by adding only a decoupling capacitor and a diode to the traditional SCSR. Compared with the existing ones, the added components are minimised. The operating principle and modulation scheme are described. A closed-loop control method is developed to enhance twice the line frequency ripple power compensation performance. The guide for the selection of the decoupling capacitance is also discussed. Simulations and experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the method.

Class of high step-up switched Z-source inverters: steady state analysis and objective function

In this study, high step-up switched Z-source inverters (HSZSIs) with two main groups namely types I and II are proposed. Each of these groups includes several proposed structures. Owing to the features of the proposed structures such as high boost factor $\lpar \beta \rpar $(beta), continuous input current, and low voltage stress;they can be used in different applications such as renewable power systems. By using the same numbers of the passive elements in comparison with a conventional Z-source inverter (ZSI), quasi-ZSI, and series ZSI (SZSI), the proposed structures produce a higher boost factor. A new objective function is defined so that all compared parameters can be investigated with each other simultaneously. The power losses and efficiency analyses for all of the proposed structures are done and compared with the conventional structures. It is shown that for $P_{{\rm out}} \simeq 200\, {\rm W}$Pout similar or equal to 200W, the measured efficiencies for basic HSZSI type I, quasi-HSZSI type I, basic HSZSI type II and quasi-HSZSI type II are 91, 85, 96, and 92%, respectively. In addition, the total harmonic distortion calculation, dynamic performance and designing a closed-loop control method for the proposed structures are shown. Finally, the experimental results are indicated for a 500 W prototype.

An amphibious spherical robot capable of motion on land as well as underwater is developed to implement the complicated underwater operations in our previous research. In order to improve the speed performance of the spherical robot on a slope or comparatively smooth terrains, we propose a new roller-skating mode for the robot by equipping a passive wheel on each leg to implement the roller-skating motion in this paper. A braking mechanism is designed to transform the state of each passive wheel between free rolling and braking states by compressing and releasing the spring, which is controlled by the vertical servo motor on each leg. Besides, in order to improve the walking stability of the wheeled robot in longitudinal direction, a closed-loop control method is presented to control the stability of the direction of movement while walking. Therefore, we conduct the experiments on smooth terrains and down a slope to evaluate the performance of the roller-skating motion, including gait stability and velocity. Temperature compensation in integrated CMOS-MEMS scanning probe microscopes

The authors report on the operation of complementary metal-oxide semiconductor microelectromechanical system (MEMS) scanning probe microscope (SPM) with integrated three-dimensional electrothermal actuation and three-axis position sensing. Conventional SPM makes use of piezoelectric positioning systems which are bulky (leading to thermal drift and poor vibration immunity) and suffer from inherent creep (leading to image distortion). The scanner design is intended to leverage the myriad physical benefits of dimensional scaling to improve the performance and to reduce the barrier to entry for SPM ownership when compared to the state-of-the-art. However, the integration of multiple electrothermal actuators on chip introduces several complications owing to coupling between electrical, thermal and mechanical domains. The focus of this Letter is to discuss the origins of these effects, and the strategies that are implemented to mitigate them. Specifically, the authors discuss the open-loop and closed-loop control methods that are used to drive the lateral and vertical actuators and propose and verify a method to compensate for the parasitic effects observed in the piezoresistive force sensors. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first integrated MEMS-SPM with multiple imaging modes that can image a sample without the need for off-chip scanners or laser-based position sensing.

A New Close-loop control method for an Inspection Robot Equipped with Electropermanent-Magnets

Since the industrial age began, increasing numbers of manufacturing plants have been set up to serve economic growth demand. More bridges were built simultaneously to connect cities and to make transportation more convenient. As these facilities have aged, regular maintenance has increased. The limb mechanism project we started almost 20 years ago was to deliver new types of inspection and maintenance to industrial fields. Our first prototype, a six-limb robot called Asterisk, included such capabilities as walking on ceilings, climbing and descending stairs and ladders, walking tightropes, and transversing rough terrain. Asterisk's latest version uses electromagnets to work in antigravity environments such as steel structures. Unfortunately, this presented a major danger, requiring that we replace electromagnets with electropermanent magnets (EPMs). Limitations on EPMs, however, required a new control strategy. We propose and compare three control methods - open-loop control, closed-loop control using torque feedback, and closed-loop control using angle feedback - in the sections that follow. Our objective is to determine the best control for inspection robots having electropermanent magnets but not using additional sensors.
