A novel method to select optimal feedback Compenstation networks for dc-dc switching converters is presented in this, paper. This method provides a support to robust design, allowing the optimal soloution choice among different projects that fulfil given constraints. The considered case of study concerns the optimization of the feedback control circuit of a voltage-mode regulated dc-dc converter. Given control loop performance constraints and the circuit Parameters Commericial values and tolerances, six different approaches are adopted to select a set of optimal feasible design solutions. Indeed, they, have been found by means of a numerical method based on Monte-Carlo technique. Interval Arithmetic is used to make computations with tolerances. The results presented in this paper highlight that, given a set of design constraints, the best projects are identified by means of a comparative evaluation of the robustness of the different possible design solution with respect to parameters tolerance.

CyFence: Securing Cyber-Physical controllers via Trusted Execution Environment

In the last decades, Cyber-physical Systems (CPSs) have experienced a significant technological evolution and increased connectivity, at the cost of greater exposure to cyber-attacks. Since many CPS are used in safety-critical systems, such attacks entail high risks and potential safety harms. Although several defense strategies have been proposed, they rarely exploit the cyber-physical nature of the system. In this work, we exploit the nature of CPS by proposing CyFence, a novel architecture that improves the resilience of closed-loop control systems against cyber-attacks by adding a semantic check, used to confirm that the system is behaving as expected. To ensure the security of the semantic check code, we use the Trusted Execution Environment implemented by modern processors. We evaluate CyFence considering a real-world application, consisting of an active braking digital controller, demonstrating that it can mitigate different types of attacks with a negligible computation overhead.

Design and experimental verification of a simplified controller for high-order converters

The modeling of high-order converter systems and design of their closed-loop controllers are difficult due to their high nonlinearity, hence high-order systems, large number of zero-poles, and complex frequency-domain characteristics. To ease the design methodologies, this paper studies high-order power converters and proposes a modeling and control method for such converter systems with order reduction. As an example, the 7th-order non-electrolytic capacitor-I-Z-Source converter (NEC-I-ZSC) is employed to implement the proposed design method. Operational analysis and small signal modeling of the NEC-I-ZSC are conducted, and a reduced-order controller is then devised. Experimental verification is conducted, which prove the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed design method.

Measurement, and control of torque ripple-induced frame torsional vibration in a surface mount permanent magnet machine

A sensor to measure the stator torsional vibration due to torque ripple produced by a surface mount permanent magnet machine is first described. The sensor is relatively inexpensive and is straight forward to incorporate into a drive system. Experiments are performed to validate that the voltage produced by the sensor is linearly related to torque ripple amplitude. closed-loop controllers are then described that adjust the stator current harmonics applied to the machine to achieve a commanded average torque while mitigating measured torsional vibration. Simulation and experimental results are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control techniques.

Addressing the multiscale organization of the brain, which is fundamental to the dynamic repertoire of the organ, remains challenging. In principle, it should be possible to model neurons and synapses in detail and then connect them into large neuronal assemblies to explain the relationship between microscopic phe-nomena, large-scale brain functions, and behavior. It is more difficult to infer neuro-nal functions from ensemble measurements such as those currently obtained with brain activity recordings. In this article we consider theories and strategies for combining bottom-up models, generated from principles of neuronal biophysics, with top-down models based on ensemble representations of network activity and on functional principles. These integrative approaches are hoped to provide effective multiscale simulations in virtual brains and neurorobots, and pave the way to future applications in medicine and information technologies.

This paper describes a model predictive control strategy to tackle the inventory control problem in Supply Chains. The problem is formulated as a receding-horizon optimization problem and the market demand is considered an external unknown disturbance. The behaviour of the Supply Chain is modelled by discrete time difference equations, both the control variables and the output variables are constrained to satisfy suitable bounds. Quantitative performance indices are introduced and the effects of the choice of the control parameters are discussed.

Feedback Control Design of Constrained Parabolic Systems in Uncertainty Conditions

The paper presents recent results by the authors on minimax control design of parabolic systems in uncertainty conditions under hard control and state constraints. The design procedure involves multi-step approximations and takes into account monotonicity properties of the parabolic dynamics. The results obtained justify a suboptimal three-positional structure of feedback controllers in the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions and provide calculations of their optimal parameters that ensure the required state performance and stability under any admissible perturbations.

An Anti-Windup Decoupling Nonlinear Control for a Paper Machine Headbox

Since most of the chemical processes are represented typically by nonlinear models, the use of nonlinear geometric control in chemical processes is straightforward. This paper presents a decoupling application in a paper machine headbox. The nonlinear geometric control is implemented with blocks for reference trajectory, tracking error, integrators of error feedback and with an anti-windup scheme. The results show a clear implementation scheme and good dynamical responses.

DESIGN AND CONTROL OF A STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION SIMULATOR

The design and control of a steering wheel vibration simulator capable of reproducing a set of desired vibration/acceleration signals is presented. The simulator is to be used in characterizing human perception of vibration as transmitted to the hand through the steering wheel. Accelerometers were used to record the acceleration at the top of the steering wheel in both the up-down (z) and side-to-side (y) directions. A two degree-of-freedom controller was synthesized with a stabilizing feedback controller designed using linear matrix inequality techniques and a zero phase error tracking feedforward controller. Simulation and experimental results to verify key steps of the design process and the effectiveness of the simulator are presented.

Synthesis of controllers using coloured petri nets and theory of regions

This paper addresses the forbidden state control problem of discrete event systems using coloured Petri nets. The problem is studied in the general framework of Ramadge and Wonham theory considering uncontrollable transitions and under non-blockingness requirement. The synthesis method computes a maximally permissive coloured Petri net controller. First, the legal behaviour the plant model should have is determined. Then, the theory of regions is applied in order to generate a maximally permissive controller. This controller is expressed in coloured Petri net terms and, is connected to the plant model. The proposed approach exploits the benefits of the parameterised modelling power of coloured Petri nets at the specification level of the plant model as well as at the synthesis level.
